There is a Citibank branch just outside the Taipei Songshan Airport.
Citibank Min Shen Branch
Address:1F., No.74, Sec. 3, Mincyuan E. Rd., Jhongshan District, Taipei City 104, Taiwan. Phone:(02)2503-0077Do note that most international flights use Taoyuan International Airport, which does not appear to have a Citibank ATM close by.
Australia has terrible exchange rate. Pretty much everywhere I go, I will just bring AUD, and sell them in foreign countries. My usual practice is bring AUD, exchange some to foreign currencies in airport enough to survive day 1. The rest I will change downtown when needed.
Too bad I don't have a Citibank Plus account. :(
Its not to hard to sign up for one…
I signed up to Citibank for a recent European trip - free and easy to do online.
Hey someones going to my country I feel good
Hey Jay Chow , what are you doing in AU ?
I was born here… LOLOLOL
Fake Jay Chou!!!! LOL
Your wife is hot
Are you guys serious lmao
Yes, Jay Chou is a regular ozbargainer.. i mean its only logical, his wife is from Sydney
@supasaiyan: The real guy?
@JayJayAU: yep! Google him
@purplelady: DAMM
Have used Citi Plus on local non-Citi ATMs with no problem (no fee)
oh great, thanks for the info. I'm going next month! :)
I've used HSBC ATMs, but usually just exchange cash at the airport bank kiosks, I think rates are officially set for all banks.
Were you charged any fee?
Nope. I've also exchanged USD, they charge a fee for older USD bills, but not the newer ones.
ooo.. okok. Sorry, just to be clear, did you use Citibank card to withdraw money on HSBC ATMs in Taiwan?
@purplelady: nope, HSBC card.
@wkapri: ohhh okok, thanks!
Take with you $A50 or $100 bills and change them with money changers in Taiwan. There is a healthy black market demand for high value banknotes in all major currencies and you should be able to achieve a commission free fx rate, i.e. the inter-bank mid rate.
@ocker, where can I find those money changers in Taipei city? Are they easy to spot?
Best way is definitely Citibank Plus but if you don't have that or something similar with zero transaction fees, then I would recommend bringing cash and exchanging it at the airport - look out for "Bank of Taiwan" branches, which should give you a reasonably fair exchange rate (unlike Travelex, their milk and honey isn't it ripping off travellers). Otherwise, any other big bank will do. Hope this helps!
if you are exhanging a large amount, i.e. >/= $2000 AUD then you can try KVB Kunlun in Sydney CBD where it is know for great competitive rates however there may be queues depending on time of day you go. I ended up exchanging from my local UAE store however, when I arrived at Taipei Taoyuan airport, the money exchange centre just within the grand hall area you arrive after you collect your bags and pass immigration, has EVEN better rates than Australia, so that is an option too. I do not think they charge a fee either but don't quote me on that :).
I took money out from a few banks ATM (using Citibank card) and most of them didn't charge any fees. Can't remember all the names, but Mega International Commercial Bank was one of them.
I'm off to Taipei shortly and trying to google ATM Withdrawal Without Transaction Fees at taipei airport ( Taoyuan International Airport) but not having much luck, I only want to get like $50 Aussie out because my hotel I'm staying at has a Citi bank 50 metres away, anyone know or a good ATM at the airport that might have low fees?
Converting actual cash will not usually get you a very good rate. Normally best to travel overseas and withdraw cash using a Citibank card to avoid international transaction fees.
