Google Play Books does this. Upload the books there. Select a book and then you can then click on the menu and "Read aloud"
Which one is best & free for IOS ?
Google play books.
You could always go for audiobooks from audible.com - wouldn't read your existing text though unfortunately.
I've often thought of using this moethod for books I cannot find on audio book.
Audio books are of course the preferred option given the human reading it uses the correct tones.
Are these programmes completely robotic / monotone in their reading?
Agreed. But it's the next best thing I guess
The voices dream reader use are really good. They still can sound a little bit robotic/monotone but very far that big robot from Lost in Space or Dr Hawking. Here are some demo's of it:

If you want to laugh there are many text to speech apps on the google play store where you can read some e books.. I guess it depends on the genre but for Reddit stuff I like to open a bunch of joke posts and then copy them into one of these apps and read em aloud lol..
Tagging along to this thread for a good proper serious read aloud Android solution.
Built into Android. Google books does this.
So all I have to do is to upload like an .epub file onto my phone and tell Google Books to read it?
Voice Dream Reader on IOS is excellent, the voice quality is great. I do believe they have a cut down android version, check their website at:
