Music solution for my AU Falcon

Stereo was cutting out every now and then but later it would cut in now and then, and these days get the occasional pop (not the shitty music) but nothing else. So there's power to the unit, a stereo shop guy ruled out the usual (suitcase damaged the rear speakers in the boot) so it's the dreaded short brought on by rust and leaks aplenty.

When I was 19 I took apart an XA Falcon with the help of an uncle and we fixed that bugger all for it to go again 6 months later. End result bought a new system from wait for it "Brisbane Car Sound!!!".

But the times have changed and it costs a 2nd mortgage and I just want to blast punk rock occasionally and quietly play pop punk with the family in the car (MY CAR) - the friggin KIA is HERS!

So, help an aging dude out. I'm pretty good tech-wise - I just fixed a $36 TV Box with a broken install of Kodi which now pumps out a million shows from Eastern California according to my VPN.

Thinking of bluetooth speaker(s) and just stream from my phone. But how powerful, what type / shape, and what about power options? (cigarette lighter fuse keeps blowing)

All thoughts except rewiring the car stereo welcomed.

Oh, and my central locking is busted so will need to hide them under the seats every time I park!!!!!

  • Regarding the bluetooth speaker I could definitely recommend the JBL Charge 3. If you're after the big boy theres the JBL Xtreme. (Also I hope you're listening to some Green Day ;) )

    • Thanks - will research specs.

Don't need music, it's an AU, listen to the epic noises from the car itself ;)

    • Diff Whine?

      • Bottoming out shocks?

    AU Falcon…. there's your problem.

I think you deserve a new(er) car. Or at least a car that isn't an AU Falcon.

    • I would suggest to the op that he could kill 2 birds with one stone, and buy a high-yielding investment to drive around in.

  • Bluetooth speaker is not going to like sitting in a hot car, but you're in Tassie so this might not be so much of a problem?

I'd replace the head unit.. You can pick up a brand name Bluetooth unit for $100

    • I do recall an issue with the AU relating to removal of the factory head unit.
It has been quite some years and my memory may be a little off, however I believe the factory head unit was integrated into the body control module.
Removal of the head unit created issues.
Could be wrong, however would advise some research before going down this route.

      • I put a single DIN in my AUII with a fascia kit from JB Hifi that gave me a DIN compartment - best choice.

  • Could you look at upgrading your mobile phone to one that has good speakers? Not going to be the best audio, but it would be the most convenient.

Here's an article discussing phones which feature good (better than average) built in speakers:

    • I imagine a bluetooth speaker will be more cost effective as well as provide better sound. Maybe a UE Roll bungeed (the elastic strap on these things is great) to the handle above the passenger door or something?

Head down to Vinnies and grab some house speakers and a receiver for a few bucks.
Grab a cheap China power inverter and crank smoke on the water every where you go

    Set your car on fire.

  • Lose the AU, get a motorbike, you'll look WAY cooler :D

In all seriousness though, I picked up a few Logitech X50's when they were on special for $15ea a few weeks, was geniunely impressed at the quality of the sound for such a cheap speaker.

  • I move fast, found your flash model, looked really good. Matched the specs important to me with the Musky DY25 at gearbest and it's now on it's way.

Cheers Adamfury, will let you know how it goes.

  • Oh and the AU rocks. Even my mechanic complimented the ride he took in it last week as he was ringing up $760 dollars. He advised against the locks and the new seatbelt too so could have been as low as $475 or has high as $1400.

  • Seeing as you have electeical problems already. Maybe it would be wise to invest in fixing the problem and not slapping a bluetooth bandaid on it.

    • Only electrical problem is the stereo and you don't throw good money after bad. It's functional 2nd car for a family of 5. Maybe you have too much cash lying around to buy bandaids. I don't.

      • Well the cause would be the water leak but anyway.
