  • Pulled any all nighters yet?

    • Several

      • Started any assignments the night before its due? :)

Are you planning on investing in 80k high yeild investments in the near future?

  • Do students still use white letter words or other means to fool word count/ plagiarism check software??

    • +1

Not so much where I go to uni as some of my markers use the plain text version of our document (as provided by the plagiarism software) to mark, which obviously shows symbols straight away. Used to be a good one to keep up the sleeve though.

    • I'm yet to meet someone to do so.
The only thing I can think of is I knew a guy that would unhyphenate words to increase his word count. Hardly makes a difference though and it isn't worth when taking into account penalties due to grammar mistakes.

If you have a bucket with 2 gallons of water and one with 7 gallons of water how many buckets do you have?

    • -1

      Fill the 2-gallon bucket.
Pour the 2 gallons of water into the 7-gallon bucket
      Fill the 2-gallon bucket again.
Fill up the 7-gallon bucket with the 2-gallon bucket
      Empty out the 7-gallon bucket.
Pour the remaining gallons of water from the 2-gallon bucket into the 7-gallon bucket.
      Fill the 2-gallon bucket.
Pour the 2 gallons of water from the 2-gallon bucket into the 7-gallon bucket.

      Answer: You have 2 buckets

    • Two buckets, unless this is one of those questions loaded with unstated assumptions only the speaker knows and will inject into the answer to show the answer of two is incorrect.

      • Shhh don't give away the answer so easily, OP has yet to provide a response.

    • +1

      2 buckets

Well aren't you the clever cookie.

I have a question: Why does this post have a 'trigger warning'? I thought this was more of an American thing where apparently people get 'triggered' by almost anything they disagree with? Has your university been infested with 'safe spaces' where students with unpopular or non mainstream opinions are bullied into silence or even prevented from speaking?

    • +4

I read that as just a joke.

    • +17

Were you triggered by the trigger warning?

    • Definitely a joke dude.
But there are definitely some left wing, loud people roaming around.

One thing that stood out to me was on my orientation day, the head of our student union encouraged us to come down and 'protest'. She didn't specify what they were protesting or what the issue was but was adamant on protesting.
Our student union at least for last semester was very left wing and very vocal about it. This was frowned upon though by many students as they are supposed to be a representative of "all" students.

Unpopular opinions are voiced in the units that I undertake and our tutors sometimes encourage it too, but I imagine that in a Women's Studies class for instance that an unpopular opinion would be met with more of a…let's say 'angry' tone.

      • Run for school council. It's easy as. I didn't bother with the union council as mine was full of useless political wannabes. Your school councils are the ones were you can affect change if you want to, or just pad your resume. Plus, if your not rubbish they will invite you into all these other secrete faculty councils.

      • Fellow Monash student here, I don't agree that the student union was very left. They were left leaning but the majority party is still moderate compared to eg. Socialist Alternative and Co - that's what I'd call very left.

Student union is elected by student votes. But since it's voluntary voting, it's only a representative of the "majority" of students who chose to care.

    • -1

Came in ready to pose this question, since there are 2 other threads from today with trigger warnings. I am very VERY happy to hear its just a joke. :/

  • +1

I've been out of uni for 20 years.
Is it true that these days, Australian uni's are now just full of left wing socialist commie SJWs seeing who can scream the loudest and get most offended?
Or is that more of a USA thing.

    Similar to Cluster's questions above.

Do conservatives get a voice? Are they heard or just shouted down and called Nazis because they have a different point of view.

    • Full left wing ideologies and posters of socialism everywhere. Anyone who voices conservative views publicly are indeed called Nazis. However, i think most students aren't as extreme as you would think they are, its just the student organisations that make it seem so.

    • I think it kinda depends on the class you take.
For a management class, I had a tutor who identified as a 'feminist'. There was some debate and she was very rational about it.
Our student union was very left wing but I elaborated a bit more of that above.

    • +1

I know many people that attend a University with that reputation here. The worst stories are lectures being interrupted by students walking in to speak about socialism and hand out literature (with the lecturers staying completely out of it) and being accosted/"shamed" for ignoring them protesting on campus.
The general consensus is that it's a small vocal group basically imitating the serious loonies you see in the States, without any strong grounding or support from the school. Way more people staying to mock them than actually participating in their protests supposedly.

Have you been to the nott on a Thursday night

  • is there a big rivalry between Monash vs Melb Uni?

    • Yeh but Monash is better

      • interesting, from which perspective?

        • Coming from a student from unimelb, there is a big rivalry between the two unis. Sometimes, lecturers will talk down about Monash in a humorous fashion.

        • @clockerrs11: ok cool, i dont know much about the rivalry, just know the Monash campus is out in the suburbs and Melb U is close to the CBD.

        • Because Melb uni is higher in rankings than Monash but Monash students disagree with the result.

        • @garffi: So you saying Monash students are sooks?

        • @JetLi: Who knows? For unimelb students it's a bit of banter, but I'm not sure whether or not it's the same for Monash students. ;)

        • Melbourne is for kids who didn't get into law or medicine as an undergrad tbh

    • +2

I wouldn't call it a rivalry, more that Monash students are sick of telling people that 'no, really I chose Monash first preference.'

    • +1

Yeah. I know a guy who got into Melbourne but is transferring to Monash next year. I'm interested in how his views change.
And it is often joked about in lectures and tutes, love some banter.

    • As someone who has been to both, the administration and management at Monash is much better.
Melbourne uni is run like a bad local council.

Employers consider them equivalent as far as I can tell, depending on the degree.

  • Do they still have the Iron Man event?

Cold pies, warm champagne, dog food - that kind of crap - and then do some rolls. The last competitor to throw up wins.

Uni's are like any other corporate today…

    • I haven't heard anything about that mate I'll ask someone

      • I wouldn't worry about it. I very much doubt anything like that would be going on these days.

Back in the day this mainly involved Engineering students. While i'm sure they still have a little free time with the ongoing institutionalised plagiarism that goes on, once that's sorted they'll only be focussed on how they'll pay their fees and get a job. Uni's are all about money money money these days.

        I miss the Iron Man.
Real men projectile vomiting onto adoring crowds.
        Respect.

        • My preferred event was the Centurion. Though I did have a mate who liked the Iron Gut because it reduced his food expenses that week so he had more cash to spend on beer.

To the OP it was (is?) part of Green Week which was held second week of second semester similar to O-Week in first semester. each lunch time there was at least one different event. as well as free beer and BBQ for non competitors.

Tricycle races - students on child's tricycle rides short course drinking beers at each of three stops

Boat Races - teams of four compete head to head to finish 4 pots fastest. Anchor (last person) drinks extra beer if any team member spills a drop.

Centurion - 100 shots of beer in 50 minutes (because melbourne uni version was 100 minutes)

Rogaining - course consisting of 3-4 200m runs with a beer to be sculled at each stop.

Four legless race - three people are tied at the leg so the middle person is constrained. run to the five libraries in any order and back to the start finish line. middle person consumes a beer at each library.

Iron Gut - fastest person to eat the unpleasant menu

Iron Bong (IB) - never discussed in public.

        • @antikythera:

          Oh yeah!
Iron Gut! - that sounds right.

My memory had faded, though i'm pretty sure they all ate at the same rate, it's just the last man who hadn't puked won (and then promptly barfed over anyone left watching).

          My God that was disgusting…

  • Is the Caulfield campus worse compared to Clayton? Heard a lot of ppl say that

Also, is it easy to transfer courses 6 months down the line or do I need reallly high grades to be considered?

    Cheers!

    • +1

It's really not that bad, you do need a lower atar to get in and it's joked that it's really just a safe. It is a lot smaller and there are less resources and food places etc.
It depends on what course you're interested in. You need same grades if you were to transfer 12 months down the line.
Are you in year 12 or what?

      • tafe**

      • Yeah yr12. Thinking of a bachelor's in commerce at Clayton but if I can't get in, I'll do business specialist or business and try transfer to comm later

        • Look into the Monash guarantee too, I didn't even know I was eligible, missed out on my first preference because I didn't apply. But that is a good idea, you might even like business specialist, it's good if you know what you want to do after uni. Best of luck with exams.

        • @HardAtTwerk:
Thanks. I was looking at CA after graduation and they accept commerce or business specialist (just particular on the majors not the degree itself). But then I've been told comm allows 2 majors while bus spec only allows one and comm is more reputable so I'd preferably do that..

    • I completed my undergraduate at Clayton and currently undertaking postgraduate at Caulfield.

Caulfield is comparably smaller and just has less of everything. It's good and bad. I remember it used to take me so long to walk between classes I would give up half way through the day and went home (lived on campus too!). Travelling to Clayton was horrendous too due to its location.

Caulfield, on the other hand, is very accessible by public transport. Your food choices aren't limited to on campus eateries. In addition, there is also a Coles nearby so now I would just buy my food there.I have cooked instant noodles, eggs and snow peas purchased from Coles using uni microwave. As a postgraduate student, we also have access to a fridge which means I could make my own coffee and tea at university.

      • Haha for most ppl Caulfield is more accessible but since I haven't got a train station nearby -_- I've gotta catch a bus and that bus goes Clayton first… but yeh getting to the CBD or something takes a lot longer from Clayton.

    • Caulfield sucks interms of facilities and environment, there are still areas under construction since 2015, mainly the library

      • You would be pleased to hear that it has recently completed constructions.

  • How did you know this was the degree you wanted to specialise in ?
Did you do commerce based subjects at school ? If not, how did you find the transition ?
What commerce-based clubs are there at Monash ?

    • It really was a second choice for me, but just after the first semester I found it to be somewhat interesting, plus I enjoy thinking that it will lead somewhere with decent pay.
None at all. I did all 3 Mathematics (Further, Methods, Specialist Maths), Physics, Chemistry and English. I felt they were the subjects I would do best in so my main priority was just maximising my atar. Transition isn't too bad, they mainly teach these units as accelerated year 12 subjects. So there is a lot of content but as long as you stay on top of the workload, you shouldn't have much of a problem.
There are a couple of specialised clubs regarding commerce (like Actuarial Studies, Accounting, Financial Management etc) and then there is the more general Business and Commerce Students' Society.

  • Is your answer to this question "no"?

    • +1

I don't need this stress with exams coming up

  • +3

I love how exams start Monday so you open a thread on OzBargain instead of study. Then again I just read it all haha. Goodluck for exams HardAtTwerk.
    - 4th year engineering student, Monash.

    • +1

We will all need it haha

    • +1

      Cheers mate, good luck

  • Your top 2 most positive experiences being in Uni?

    • +1

It's really rewarding to see your hard work paying off, that is a big one.
You do get to meet some decent people too, love the days off as well. Having a flexible timetable is a change from high school that I enjoy a lot.

  • Be like all the other Monash Comm/Sci people I know - do medicine!

    • I do not have the work ethic to do that ahahah

    • Why are people doing commerce and science for med? Wouldn't you just do science or biomed?

      • Because the dreams of what a comm/sci degree could achieve did not match with reality lol

  • how does it feel to be always ranked below melbourne uni?

    • Check above mate ;)

  • Which is the best halls of residence and why is it Farrer?

Do Student Activities still exist and run free beer and bbqs , bands and other functions? Have you considered getting involved with them?

  • Do you or anyone you know experiment with medications to improve concentration?

    • Nah I don't. I only really interact with first year students and I'd be really surprised if anyone did something like that. It's really not required.

  • Do you smash many broads?

  • How much do you make/week?

  • Which Science are you doing?

  • How is calculus taught these days? In my day it was years of rote learning integration techniques only to find out later that analytical methods aren't available for a whole lot of the more interesting stuff. It's important to know basic analytical calculus techniques, but for the more advanced techniques, I think I would be getting students to program and apply numeric methods. It's a weird feeling having wasted years of your life doing calculus homework when you write a numeric integrator in an hour and it's more useful than all of that and in many cases more accurate than the analytical alternative.

  • Why do Monash keeping calling me asking for donations every year because I'm an alumni?

  • Why should one employ you? What can you do for your employer organization?

    1. Your perception and general thinking about older generations (you can group them as you wish)
    2. View on current economy, housing market in particular. I read young generation has the least positive outlook on future among several surveyed countries - your thoughts?

    Thanks in advance, mate

  • Did 1 year in Clayton and 3 years in Caulfield (Bachelor degree with Honours). In my last (Honours) year Monash sacked lots of experienced lecturers from my faculty including the supervisor for my minor research thesis. They were replaced by new staff most of which clearly didn't have sufficient/enough industry experience. Can't say I was happy with it.

BTW do you still get charged for printing from the first page? I remember Monash was the only Uni that I knew back in my days that charged students for printing without giving any credit.

  • what car are you going to buy?

  • What subjects did you take in year 12?

  • Have you met any bastard or jerk lecturer?
Especially those who promised exam tips and all they show are all blackened sentences, too many chapters, or false exam tips (what is excluded is included vice-versa).

  • Considering the word fridge is short for refrigerator, why is there a 'd' in fridge but not in refrigerator?
