Tips to Buy Second Hand NAS from Internet

Any tips to buy a second hand NAS from internet (eBay, Gumtree)?

Also, is there a 'clock' on the QNAP product, similar to Macbook, where you can see the number of battery cycle

The seller cannot produce invoice when the item was purchased, thus I'm pretty much out of warranty as soon as I purchase from the seller.

Thanks

I look for reviews on the model number, if the first review is in, say, 2015, I assume it is made in 2015 and has no warranty, even if that model was sold for 2 years.

What's the battery cycle? Most NAS I've seen run on 230v, and they are designed to never switch off. So I don't see what battery cycle would do.

If it is a NAS with removable HDDs, they will go for a really long time. Maybe the fan might need to be replaced, but that's usually the only moving park.

    • Haha yes I know it runs on AC power, but who knows it has some sort off logging mechanism.

Fair point on the review date, yes the first review is in 2014, surely it's out of warranty already by now…

Good point re: fan, I might need to contact the manufacturer whether they provide fan replacement, in case it stops working on first week of having them…

Wouldn't be too worried about the fan, easy enough to get some generic fan in the same size from eBay or AliExpress and install it.

Only things I would be thinking about are: Does it do what I want? Am I happy with the price? If yes to both, just buy it. Don't be worrying about warranty and can i get replacement parts. Because when you start worrying about that, just skip the hassle and buy new.

  • Bought synology second hand seller just used it for a year (can tell from invoice and model number). No hdd just the nas.

Fast forward… 4 and half years later.. Today.

Still working fine never had problem.

    • Yes, if the original invoice can be provided by the seller I'll feel okay, but this time the seller lost the original invoice…thus you won't know when he bought it…could be 3 years ago and I have another 1 year lifetime haha

      • Good nas would have much more than 4 years lifetime. I suggest invest in good new one yes I know expensive but at least hdd is cheap now. Get two hdd just enough for you now and expand slowly when you need in the future.

If you are worried about 2nd hand alternative would be a HP mirco server and put something like XPenology (Synology DSM copy) on it.
Got one of those for $200, 6 bay, much faster than standard Synology for same price.
Bit of effort to setup but runs really well afterwards.
Could also run FreeNAS or so of course.

I've done this, got an old ML350 and it is great as a NAS/Plex server. Gives you more processing power and more options than a synology

  • My tip'd be to buy one off me ;)
Got one lying around somewhere that a friend gave me and never had a reason to use.

    • PM me what you got and I'll see the spec
Also, would you still have the original invoice?

  • Bought a used Synology DS1515+ from eBay in the USA, the PSU had a whine in it…not too loud…but was annoying enough to want to replace it. Contacted Synology in Taiwan, yep, still under warranty but as it was bought in the USA I had to ship it back to Taiwan at my expense (80$). Didn't even have to send a copy of the invoice either.
Synology not only agreed to replace the PSU but also agreed to do a fix on the Intel C2000 chip problem for me. What Synology sent back to me was a brand-new DS1515+, can't fault that customer service.

    • How did they know it was still under warranty?

      • By the Serial Number of the unit.

        • Ah good to know.

Too bad Synology does not have HDMI output as yet, otherwise I'll consider this brand too

        • Don't need an HDMI connection as I've got a recent model Samsung TV with the Synology app on it, also I can stream from the NAS as an input source for the teev.

You seem pretty hung up on getting an invoice. I would suggest second hand is not for you.

    • Yea, because I saw QNAP warranty and it requires me to have invoice for any warranty claim

Although if the model is from year 2014, I guess nothing to lose anyway :)
