Optus "Unlimited Data" Upload Limits - Advice Required

Hi all.

I'm currently signed up to Optus' "unlimited" adsl2 broadband plan. I find that after 2-3 hour's use of an iptv box my internet essentially cuts off, with downloads dropping to around 10kbps across all connected devices.

I telephoned Optus to enquire and was told on the third time it happened that the reason was due to "significant uploads of around one gigabite" the day it happened. I was told that a home user shouldn't be uploading that much and that Optus have a 1gb daily upload limit and once this is exceeded, your connection will be throttled (more like cut off). I know the box is responsible and that's the only source my uploads are coming from. I don't torrent or game.

I read through all terms and conditions related to my bundle, including the Fair Go policy and found zero mention of uploads, let alone a 1gb limit. I was previously with TPG and used the box daily without issue. Is anyone aware of such upload limits (especially capped at only 1gb) or think this is right? Do you think I have a right to terminate the contract if not?

Finally, I read in the Fair Go policy that Optus would contact me prior to limiting my service to discuss any issue associated with Fair Go breaches, which obviously didn't happen.

Thank you.

I am no longer surprised by any telco stunt.

Make sure you screenshot all the conditions then go to the TIO website and make a complaint. The issue will magically improve and they'll presumably set about degrading someone else's service and inventing conditions that restrict the service.

that Optus have a 1gb daily upload limit

What the? 1GB is a paltry amount for data transfer. Optus must be tightening their belts if they can't afford to have one customer uploading 1GB a day using an ADSL connection.

As I recall when I was on Optus cable back in 2006 I remember there was a upload cap (roughly 1GB a day). 2006 is more than a decade ago though — can't believe they are still enforcing the 1 GB upload limit rule in this day and age.

    • ISP systems are always configured for greater download traffic than upload, they're just pissed off OP is uploading on their network they've catered around downloading.

So you are on an unlimited broadband plan which they cut you off at 1GB
That is the most F****** stupid thing ive ever heard relating to "unlimited" internet.

it's like they don't understand that people do upload things

His pay for "Unlimited" yet they cut him off at 1GB, this guy needs to change internet providers

That's ridiculous. Yes "bring on 2006" is right on the mark! I'm over in NZ and blown away by how good the internet here is and how many decent WiFi hotspots there are. Make a complaint directly, then make the complaint to TIO (you need to complain directly beforehand) and cosnsider changing providers.

I can confirm I have called up before with the same issue and have been basically told the same thing. I argued on the same basis then, but was basically told again and again over the phone that it is part of the T&Cs, even though he/she could not show it to me.

I eventually stop chasing it up as it was taking too much time and effort and it was an issue that only happens to me when I go on a holiday and come home to upload my pictures all at once.

    • Sorry to hear I'm not the only one. I honestly looked through all the t&C's and policies they linked but could find nothing. I intend to complain and switch providers. I'll keep this thread updated with the result.

  • Out of curiosity, why did you switch to Optus?

    • They offered the most attractive deal at the time of signing. I've found Optus's ADSL2 speed slightly faster than TPG's so for downloads and usage outside of when I'm using the iptv box has been good.

Forgive my ignorance but why is your system uploading that amount of data if you aren't gaming or torrenting. I can understand a large amount of download for watching shows but what is it uploading? Is it possible to monitor what the device is up to with a monitor program on your PC or is it the terminating box for the ADSL. Just wondering if you might have been hacked.

    • Thinking the same thing. Thats a lot of data for upload

Just wondering if the OP has been BOT hacked. Something like Wireshark might be worth looking at if they can monitor the device on the network.

        • Thanks for the advice. I'm using an iptv box as stated and am 100% sure that's the source of the uploads. I guess that's the way these boxes operate and is the "risk" of using them. The fact is though I was using it for 12 months without issue with TPG and since I've changed to Optus, I've had issues. If one gb of uploads is excessive then I would expect Optus tell me so as per their policy prior to them choosing how I use my connection.

        • @The Almighty Dollar:

maybe you should dig into the settings or configuration and disable the P2P option or something similar that disables uploading

        • @scrimshaw: Good tip. Would you happen to know if this is possible in Android though?

1GB of upload isn’t much if you’re using online backup like Backblaze.

OP I would report this misleading behaviour to ACCC. They can’t sell unlimited and impose these misleading limits.

  • What the hell you should be able to download 1GB without limit because thats what your paying for

    • It's uploading that's the issue, not downloading.

      • Same thing

it's not the same, this is Australia m8

  • Is advertised as unlimited, it's unlimited 1Gb is ridicules it's a poultry about of data.
Is just Optus's customer support not interested in fixing the problem cause it's going to cost them to troubleshoot.

In leaving Floptus mobile in a few days, data free music streaming wasn't data free, took multiple calls 30+ minutes to explain that Google music is using data, finally got through to an engineer he was baffled we agreed to let the music stream for several hours at night 450MB was used, no reimbursement.

I'm glad I'm leaving Floptus, they may have data free music streaming, but it's impossible to talk to a human being on the phone >:(

Floptus is chickening out. That's probably why only chooks are chickening the help lines.

I upload more than 5gb every day with Telstra, no problem. Optus is BS, 1GB uploading cap is BS, you should make a complaint to TIO and change the new ISP.

    • Backing up new photos from Camera to google drive/ drop box will easily over 1 GB. Their policy is BS, luckily i hasn't switch to Optus (due to my lazy)..
