SSD - with AUD/USD Parity and OCZ New Factory, Will We See Much Lower Prices in Late 2010 or Wait 'Til 2011?

Is anyone else hoping to see some more deals on OzBargain for decent capacity SSDs at ~AUD$200?

I can only recall a couple of such memorable, extremely popular SSD deals here this year.
OCZ recently announced a new Taiwan plant which would substantially boost volume, so hopefully this will mean one or more substantial price drops.

However supply (or specifically a supplier locally with lots of stock) is probably the key.

Does anyone have any clue about the timing of large volume shipments of lower-price SSDs to Oz?
With USD AUD parity, can we hope for a double-dip price drop? :)

  • AUD-USD benefits depends on who is doing the importing. Many businesses would lock in exchange rates as part of their risk management strategies. For larger businesses these are usually around 3-month forward contracts.
It is also depends on the outlook for the exchange rate - if it is expect to maintain parity or better for a while then benefits will start flowing through but considering it has just hit parity, don't expect that assumption.

Almost all retailers will try to maintain price stability rather than take advantage of swinging things like exchange rate. Swinging prices creates big problems. So you will generally see a considerable lag on exchange rate benefits.

  • Since SSDs are mainly sold by smaller, independent IT shops, I am hoping that we will see some entrepreneurial offers, rather than all dealers just absorbing the AUD cost savings into their prices.

SSDs may not be a volume seller with sufficient $ profits for Myer or Woolworths/DSE to make these offers.

Since China's yuan is pegged (more or less) to the USD we should be seeing some big savings at some stage, if the OCZ fourfold increase in production levels means that this company can offer some price leader products.

Will there be another seller, like the two sellers' offers featured here in 2010 for SSDs, which might want to offer a great deal on OzBargain?

    • China's yuan might be pegged but these are all traded in USD. As for small computer shops they all buy their stock from a small number of wholesalers who lock in their exchange rates for months in advance. Savings on these won't be seen until at least the new year, and possibly not unitl Q2 2011.

      • OK, thanks for the reality check.
I'll stop thinking about it for another quarter, by which time we will probably have another RBA interest rise and three more from CBA's mortgagee-rape department.

Maybe by March, wholesalers will have passed on some AUD parity savings.

If Australian retailers cannot be competitive when the AUD is worth more than the USD, people will buy these from the US instead!

  • Have we hit parity with USD? when? am i missing something?

    • We just hit 101.19, it's now back at 100.93

  • I know someone that works for one of the importers, they dont make much, I was was surprised, nor do the resellers, OCZ themselves make all the $$$, USA gets better pricing then the OZ importers.

Plus in US is goes from OCZ to New egg or someone and straight to customer where as in OZ it goes,

OCZ to Importer (at a higher cost+ international freight charges)then to resller (add freight again) then to customer. plus our 10% GST

  • Oh i forgot in terms of price drops it wont happen until all brands fully make the switch to 25nm instead of the current 32/34nm flash prob 2 to 3 months, plus it wont be anything special…..it wont be half price or anything.
