KZ ZS5 Earphones Grey/Without Mic US $15.99 (AU $20.45) @ GearBest

GBGGK40

PLEASE NOTE "the KZ5 has been revised, moving the second BA driver into the nozzle (so two BA drivers in the nozzle firing directly into the ear). This is the same set up as the KZ6, and some have said it shares a similar hot treble issue as the KZ6." Quote from the comment below.

KZ has a newer offering with ZS6 but it seems inferior to this in that the treble is more controlled on the ZS5. Everything appears more balanced. Observe the frequency graphs here: http://frequency-response.blogspot.com.au/2017/09/kz-zs6-fre…

  • Good price but I have a pair and feel I should warn people that these are very large earphones and as a result not particularly comfortable.

Also quite a sharp sound to my ear- but very good clarity.

    • i'm not sure with the KZ5 earphones, but I found the KZ3 with the original silicon buds were uncomfortable.
I switched the tips to Comply foam ones, and now they're fantastic.

      Do i really need a pair though…

  • I've been interested in these as they are one of the few affordable buds that have replaceable cords, which are always the first part to fail.

One thing to note: the KZ5 has been revised, moving the second BA driver into the nozzle (so two BA drivers in the nozzle firing directly into the ear). This is the same set up as the KZ6, and some have said it shares a similar hot treble issue as the KZ6.

So just be careful about which version of the KZ5 is being compared in comments / graphs. (The graph linked above is kz5 version 1 I believe, which may or may not be the version you will receive from this deal.)

There isn’t really any way to tell which version you’re ordering, it just depends on how old the stock is. The only way to tell which version you receive (without ripping the mesh off!) is to shine a light through the mesh, and look for the reflection / outline of the BA driver/s (version 1 will have one circle, version 2 will have two circles).

(Disclaimer: I haven’t been keeping up with the latest updates on impressions of the KZ6 and KZ5 version 2, but the above is what I read from the initial impressions of each.)

Oh no, thats a huge change. They should rename it.

      • Definitely agree! But from what I understand, KZ has a history of revising models without noting, so I think we’re out of luck…

    • when does the change started ?

      • Changed occurred sometime during August, I believe.

I ordered my pair roughly halfway through August, and I received version 1. The earliest report I read of someone receiving version 2 was someone who ordered in late August. However, I have also read people who ordered in September and received version 1, so as I said, it just depends on how old the stock is that different shops have.

        • the revision got nothing to do with the packaging right ?

i mean during the initial release, all zs5 comes in ultra fancy premium box …. vs small plastic box.

        • @phunkydude: Post on reddit says; All big packaging ZS5s are v1, but not all v1s come in big packaging.

        • @phunkydude:

To my knowledge, the premium packaging, with more sets of included tips, was the local version (available in China and Japan). The more basic packaging, with fewer sets of tips, was the international version (for the international market).

I haven’t read anything about whether the updated version is limited to one market/packaging or the other, but if someone has said that on reddit, it is quite possible - eg. they may have done version two for the international market only.

This might actually make some sense, because the main reason for version 2 was probably in response to complaints by western reviewers questioning the placement of the second BA, and whether it actually did anything. So potentially, KZ may have changed the placement of the second BA driver for the international version only. (Note: This is entirely speculation, as I have not checked the comment referred to by iamjacks)

But definitely there were two different styles of packaging for version 1. Not sure about version 2, sorry.

  • Please stop posting these! I have no idea what I'm going to do with all the In-Ear monitors I've ordered over the last week. I have a problem. :-)

Seriously though, thanks OP. I'm looking forward to checking out the various KZs vs the Xiaomi Hybrids vs my trusty Etymotics…

Prepare to be disappointed if yours are ER4P like mine. You'll probably hear more bass with the cheapies, but everything else will be worse.

      • Chifi is a bassheads dream. Almost everything has bass to the roof! I own the ER4P and dozens of chifi iems and I agree with your comment. I havent found an iem that does other things better. There are options like the Seahf AWK-009 but that has a piercing treble and insane cable microphonics to boot.

      • +1, ER4Ps literally use 1 BA driver which cost ~$20 a pair, I've been making them DIY for my friends and it's a hit, but it's nowhere competitive at the ~$400 MSRP

      • Not ER4Ps unfortunately - HF5s. Not expecting them to compete seriously, but I'm still amazed at how good Chifi sounds when cost is factored into the equation.

  • :( paid 24 and still in the pile of shipping bags unopened

    good price.

  • It's great, but burning in was needed
Due to being basshead an eq was needed but these can handle lower freq like a boss.
Will also confirm that the eartips given are shite, use good Xiaomi hds works really well.
Also, it friction grips the eartips, does not have notch for the tips to hold on to. Can be slightly uncomfortable to ears unless the curves are adjusted, or you opt for soft cables, like KZ ATRs

  • The Bluetooth Cable is compatible with these and the ZS6 also.

    • I find the lag on the KZ Bluetooth cable makes them useless for watching movies, the lip sync issue drives my nuts.

      • Can’t VLC fix that, or is the lag variable?

  • I've got the first gen ones and they sound great but some songs are unbearable to listen to due to the harsh trebles presented in these earphones. The clarity is amazing especially for the price. I enjoy listening to these when I don't want to put on my $1k MDR-Z7 overear headphones :)

  • +1

I love the detail and clarity in these. They take a hot steamy crap all over earphones, headphones and IEMs from Senheiser, B&O, Beats, Sony, AudioTechnica, Shure and AKG that I've paid up to 10-15 times more for in the past.

The KZ ZS5 were my favourites until I discovered the "Senfer XBA 6in1", which have a much more exciting bass.

Glad to see other ChiFi headphones besides the Xiaomi Pistons getting some recognition on OzB recently.

    • +1

Everytime I see a pistons deal I cringe. There are so many better options for often less money. VE monks are so damn good for $5USD. I must have got the KZ ZS5v1 because mine aren't sibilant at all - I think I paid around $32AUD about 4 months ago.

      • +1

Completely agree!! The VE Monks are my casual go-to ear buds, then it's the KZ ZST Pro; KZ ZS5 and if I'm intent on really enjoying a piece of music I'll break out the Senfer XBA 6in1.

I have all the Xiaomi Pistons, they're quite adequate although the latest version the HD Pro are sibilant as hell.

    • +1

Those Senfer are in a different price range though.

  • Hmm looking forward to listening to these cans. Can anyone recommend which replacement cable would improve sound of these KZ ZS5.
