Help Me Find a Cartoon from My Childhood FOUND, and What's Yours

Update:

durd0008 found it, it was the The Adventures of Sam thanks durd0008 :), and thanks PJC for finding the whole series on YouTube :)

I'd just like to thank everyone for all your help in tracking down a series that I've been wanting to see for such along time :D, and for finding a few more interesting TV series that I'll be watching :).

On a side note what where everyone's favourite childhood TV shows, any that you'd want to track down

Greetings fellow Ozbargainer's :).

I'm hoping you can help me find a cartoon from my childhood it used to be aired on TV in the mid late 90's, on ABC I think, it was one of my favorites.
the story revolves around a young man that is in search of his father accompanied by his friend also a young man, later in the series they they meet a young woman (who was cast out by her tribe?).
the story takes place in the wilderness, jungle, South America, Asia?

Some details:
2D animated cartoon, similar in animation to Pocahontas and Atlantis animated movies.
The main character was a young man about 16-20?, I think he had yellowish hair like John Smith in Pocahontas, he was searching, rescuing his father that had been abducted, or gone missing?
The main character is accompanied by his best friend, he had brown hair and his age was also about the same as the main character.
the young woman's age is about the same as the 2 other characters, she is from a tribe? that is at conflict with the ones that have abducted the father.

Not sure about these details of the young woman:

  • Plot 1, I'm not sure but the young woman's father may have been the leader of a people, her father was overthrown and the bad guy becomes the leader and abductes the main characters father.

  • Plot 2: the young woman's people where all but destroyed and fled from the people that abducted the father, finding herself alone she teams up with the 2 young men to free the father and destroy the main bad guy.

I'm not sure if the people (tribes) have powers.

well that's all I remember, hope everything I wrote makes sense, I really really want to find this cartoon, I've been searching for it for so long :(.
Anyways thanks for reading :)

I watched this recorded on video tape when I was very young.

Edit:
WITHOUT A DOUBT I REMEMBER A CHARACTER SEARCHING FOR OR RESCUING HIS FATHER

I remember the main character on a white horse, think the horse went up on its hind legs as the character was going to charge it escape the bad guys.

The 2 young men where caught and locked in a cage made of wooden polls, there where creamish yellowish stone walls and floors, the female character sneaks in and rescues them, the bad guys go after them as they escape, I think (but not sure) they escape by diving in to water and swimming for it?

Edit:
What are your favorite cartoons TV series from your childhood and would you like to watch them over again?

      • Oh yes, Farthing Woods has got to be on my to 5 favorite children's TV series, I watched the entire series again on YouTube last year it's probably still up :)

        • Thanks Frugal Rock :).

Nop still not it, but it looks awesome I'm going to have to watch it :).
The characters are much older, or maybe Mr being so young they seemed so much older.

I've been feeling the need to go over stuff from my childhood, TV, movies, games, I have found one game that I played a few times at a friend's it was HALO 2!:)

          @Wystri Warrick:
The weirdest cartoon from my childhood was Hugo the Hippo. Looks harmless, but back in the 70s and 80s cartoons were definitely being made by people under the influence of substances and tripping us (then) kids out.

          under the influence of substances

          Haha.

You know I've seen so many cartoons as a kid I could be getting some mixed up, thought I definitely remember the 2 guy locked up behind brown bars and the woman rescues them.

Out of interest, can anyone confirm if a character in "The Adventures of Sam" was searching for his father?

If not, I'm interested to know the context of the plot that may have triggered such a memory (from wiki, his brother Tom?). Despite the doubt expressed in the main character's hair being yellow I for whatever reason felt this memory was correct (maybe because it's so rare?).

Personally, I have an interest in solving problems programmatically using heuristics and progressive feedback but the problem is a lot harder when the accuracy of the initial inputs themselves are in question.

If you were to going to build a crawler using publically accessible information (e.g. Wikipedia, fan websites etc), what do people here think would be good questions to ask OP to narrow down the search quickly? At first it appeared as simple as crawling ABC's Wiki entry for every link and looking for the words animated/cartoon/etc, search/find/etc and father/dad/etc, but relying on the last term would have killed search confidence if approached objectively.

From that Youtube clip, streuth that's the most stereotypical collection of Aussie-sounding accents I've heard on TV.

I was about 5 at the time.
I only saw a small part of the show and it was only bits and pieces, as my parents didn't think it was appropriate for my age.

Remember the main character locked up in a cage/cell and a girl sneaking around and some guys (bad?) After her, she free's him I think, this is where my memory gets hazy.
Also remember a character or some characters riding a white horse.
For a most of the time I remembered it, I remember there being a dragon which is what I found really cool, but it's seems I forgot about the dragon and just remembered the show being really cool.
I also slightly remember the music being very distinctive from anything I've heard before.

Being very young, not even remembering my age I guess I imagined up some stuff and got some facts wrong (OK a lot:), it was his brother not father, I no doubt also may of mixed it up with other TV series (unintentionally of corse :P).

I tried the Wikipedia search a few years ago, I was awestruck, lost and baffled.

From that Youtube clip, streuth that's the most stereotypical collection of Aussie-sounding accents I've heard on TV.

That has got to be the most weirdest thing, I absolutely do not have the slightest memory!!!!

If it helps, I found it by typing "abc kids show 90s" into Google and selected the picture that most looked like "The Road to El Dorado"

      • Thanks that actually does help. Before OP confirmed it, when I saw the yellow hair I also had a feeling you were right, which means we both used descriptions for human-driven image recognition.

But I don't know how Google decides to collate those posters to begin with, considering the list is incomplete and might not even appear if you change a word even slightly.

A show that I just found recently that I had vague memories of for years was Spellbinder. It is available on YouTube, so I've been watching it. A movie I solved a few years ago that I had childhood memories of was the Dark Crystal.

Isn't it funny how some movies/shows leave such strong impressions on you that you remember them years/decades later, even if you forgot about them as a teenager?

    • +2

Spellbinder was awesome (for an Aussie show)!

    • Dark Crystal

      Good shot there Lord Chamberlain!

    • Those electro hand things though.

I also love this show, and found them all on a torrent site. Unusual for Australian show.

  • +2

Showing my age, one of my favourites back then was Captain Planet

    • +2

And the best line in a cartoon ever:

"If there's one thing I like better than being evil, it's being sneaky"

(Probably was Battle of the Planets, but whatever)

    • +1

      I loved Captain Planet also!
Captain Planet, he's our hero, gonna (something something) down to zero.
I think I saw it when I was a bit older so remember it perfectly, or maybe because it was reasonably simple to grasp the concepts in it. Whereas when I saw Spellbinder I was only about 7 or 8 years old and it was intended for teenage audiences, so some of the concepts were over my head leading to me not remembering it perfectly

One show I had to seriously hunt around for was 'Pirates of Dark Water'! All I remembered was 'black water' and 'jewels'. Thank you google!

  • +2

I'm quite older now, but it helps having younger siblings or baby sitting, allowed me to see a wide range of kids shows (and adult toons) through the years 90s-00's-10's. Here's the notable ones I remember watching:
    … ….

He-Man, Power Rangers, The Smurfs, Popeye, Inspector Gadget, Flintstones, The Jetsons

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Spiderman, X-Men, Gargoyles, Street Sharks, Godzilla

Billy the Cat, Tom and Jerry, Looney Tunes, Simpsons, South Park, Daria, Art Attack (alright, not a cartoon but a kids show)

Captain Planet, Magic School Bus, Madeline, Rugrats, Arthur, Hey Arnold, Rocko's Modern Life

Ahh Real Monsters, Trapdoor, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Dexter's Lab, Pinky and the Brain, Johnny Bravo, Samurai Jack

The Animals of Farthing Wood, Jakie Chan Adventures, Pokemon, Digimon, Dragonball Z, One Piece, Zoids

Futurama, Family Guy, Bob's Burgers, Adventure Time, Regular Show, Spongebob

    To watch:
    Archer, Rick and Morty

    • +1

I used to love animals of farthing wood! Thanks for reminding me!

      • +1

That was one of my favourites as a boy too:), oh and Thunderbirds :)

    • +1

Ah yes I remember watching these ones too

The Smurfs, Flintstones, Billy the Cat, Tom and Jerry, Looney Tunes, Simpsons, Magic School Bus, Madeline, Rugrats, Arthur, Hey Arnold, The Animals of Farthing Wood.

  • +2

I used to love this show called M.A.S.K. like a special forces unit but no one had heard of it. Wanted to get my kids into it and found all eps are on you tube - yes. Showed the kids and they were like what is this, no thanks. Ah well good for nostalgic value!

      MASK Crusaders!

Anyone know the name of the short little animations that were on TV in the 80s where there was an artist's hand that was pen drawing a little guy who spoke French I think and it always ended with "ENDE"

  • +2

There is a series that I've wanted to see the rest of for many years. It was about people living in developing world countries talking about how lucky they are with what they have but from our western perspective they have very little.

I made a separate post here

I grew up in the sixties and just about every show must have involved drug use in the creation of it.
    Batman,
    Banana Splits,
HR Pufnstuff (although the makers did try to deny the title was drug related, but yeah).
    The Monkeys.

A bit later was this really weird show called The Kids from C.A.P.E.R. Read the wiki.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Kids_From_C.A.P.E.R.

    • +2

      +1 for these.

I remember Banana Splits being the.. intro show(?), that would then introduce The Monkeys/HR Pufnstuf etc, as well as Danger Island I think it was called.

I used to love watching this series about a mystery solving group of children that went on adventures everywhere, and they had a cockatoo that went with them everywhere, but I’m pretty sure they were English or something (but maybe american- can remember). It was sort of like the Goonies but that’s not it. I used to rent videos of the show as a child, and now I’ve spent ages searching for it but have never been able to find it again :(

Im a early 80s kid and i was trying to remember an animated movie i watched when i was very young. Pretty sure we hired it from our local video ezy

I remember it having some sort of scared rabbit and possibly a boy and the whole land they were in had the colour taken out of it and they could go around and re-paint the land so to speak.

Probably a terrible description but if anyone has an idea?

    Some of my favs were:
    Dinosaucers
    Thundercats
    M.A.S.K
    Cops
    Defenders of the earth
    Galaxy rangers

    • +2

I remember writing to Channel 9 for some reason asking them if they could put Dinosaucers on TV. They actually did respond in letter form and say that they didn't have the episodes or something along those lines but would consider my request for future programming. I only ever had a few episodes on VHS so that was my only exposure to it but I loved it.

Wish I could help you with what you are trying to remember but just wanted to thank you for reminding me of that memory.

What was that series called. It was about teenagers on an island and they always talked about going to the mainland or something. Maybe they lived in bunkers? And some older dude was a guard or general or something?

  • Does anyone remember Captain N: The Game Master? Basically a huge Nintendo ad.

    • I remember captain powers and the soldiers from the future…..

  • I remember watching a cartoon, probably in the mid-90s, where the characters kinda transformed into a mech suit (kinda like transformers), and i think they fought with swords/blades and stuff. I remember the term 'blade' being important (lead character?) and i remember a black background, maybe it was in space?

    Any thoughts?

  • Favourite cartoons:
    - Samurai Pizza Cats
    - Voltron
    - Transformers
    - Mysterious Cities of Gold
    - Pinky and the Brain - who actually was the smart one?
    - Foofur? - I am a dog person
    - Ranma - I got the whole series and when I watched it later in life and then I realized how much they had to censor from the kids' versions (so much of it is wrong but oh so funny).

Recommendation: go to Youtube and search for old Cartoon compilations. It really brings you back to your childhood.

  • No-one has mentioned these golden oldies yet:
    Prince Planet

least that is what it sounded like to me before I could speak English.

    • Conan?

      • Thanks,I just looked Conan the boy in the future.the cartoon I am trying to find had the same style of animation but it wasn't setin post apocalyptic times it was set in the stone age.

    • Was it a bunch of kids looking for something or they got lost and had to find there way home? I recall con con as a name which i thought of this cartoon I have on VHS which was taped off tv.
