ALDI Portable Air Conditioner - Did Anyone Try It before?

Assuming this is not the first conditioner Aldi is selling, did anyone try it before? Is it any good https://www.aldi.com.au/en/special-buys/special-buys-wed-25-… ?

No but I've tried their christmas hams. They're pretty good.

No portable air-conditioner is any good, really. They are noisy. They take up room. They radiate heat. They pump hot air out the pipe which you shove out your window. Where does the extra air come from to fill the air that you are pumping out your window? It draws hot outside air back in through all the gaps in your doors & windows.

    Regards, disgruntled portable AC owner.

  • Their Butter is pretty good, but it doesn't cool me down much, just makes me greasy.

  • While we're at it, anyone try their tower or pedestal fan?

I dont know about this unit, but I had an Omega portable air con a few years ago, with good specs and all that - paid $600 for it. Short story, portable airconditioners are very noisy, inefficeient and they need ducting to the nearest door or window. Check the window - box airconditioners, they seem a better value and are more efficient in cooling your room.

    • The OP might be renting. I remember using a portable a/c in the past - sure a window/split unit is better, but when you don't have a choice, I think a portable a/c is much, much better than just a fan during hot summer nights!

      • Perhaps, but if you're a light sleeper it's choosing to be awake from portable a/c noise or heat (if you don't buy one or don't switch it on).

        • Light sleepers will probably already have a pair of earplugs handy. So it's really choosing to be awake from heat, or asleep in comfort with earplugs and a cool room. :)

Why would a landlord object to a tenant putting a window ac in? I've never installed one before but just checked out Youtube and I see that it involves a couple of screw or nails. Other than that it just slots in, slots out- big deal. You would have to be a real narc to object to that. The least of your possible tenancy problems.

Just wondering. I've seen it seen it said quite a few times on forums here that renters are stuck with the inferior portable air cons and I do not get it. Do tenants actually ask the landlord for permission to install window air cons and get knocked back or is it an urban myth?

        • the problem is often with windows - I have windows, that I need to open with push (like doors) - so window ac won't fit in it and this is quite hard to do this without taking out/changing frame or window itself. I am pretty sure this will not be taken easy with my landlord. Another thing is that I have 3 bedrooms and install (=mess with windows) in each it's nightmare.
With portable I just need to google how to fit fuse into such windows and I can move it around from room to room.

So this is not about money (I would love to install a proper AC unit), but more about renting.

P.S.: The good news renters always have option to find another house :)

        • Why would a landlord object to a tenant putting a window ac in?

Because they might be renting a unit where that might be impossible to do. :)

Tried it last year. Waste of your effort, don't buy.
Ceiling fans and Cold Showers are more affective. And if you can afford, a proper AirCon.

I bought one last year. My wife hates it because it is noisy but I don't mind it. It does not work like an air con though. It will not cool a room down if you close the doors and run the outlet out the window. It is more like a cold fan. Better off investing the money in a proper split system imo.

I got a Kogan branded portable, it does cool down the bedroom. Not sure about the ALDI branded one.

  • i have one of this, as everyone said, it rarely works, very noisy, even with earplug on. We only use it for the kiddies because they can sleep next to a airplane engine, on a very hot day 35+. The thing is very inefficient and can only drop the room temperature down to around 28-29 degree and it's best to start it when room temperature is around 30, otherwise it takes forever. But for 28-29 degree where everywhere is 36+ it's good enough.

And don't listen to others about their $600 plus one work better, all of these portable aircon will be noisy and inefficient because of its inherent flaw in design. Its cools down the air in the room and blow out the hot air, which in essence creates a vacuum in your room, so hot air from outside will continue to flow in. So the cooling effect is minimal.

    • And don't listen to others about their $600 plus one work better, all of these portable aircon will be noisy and inefficient because of its inherent flaw in design.

They do work, you just need a powerful unit for a small room. Portable air conditioners are last-resort cooling devices. They're nowhere as good as a window or split, but if you have no choice, it's better than a fan - if you get a powerful unit, have a small closed room, and install it properly.

  • DickSmith (Kogan) is doing discount on portable air con as well
