Chance of Return Flights to NZ Going on Sale

Hey guys, planning a trip to NZ next year late March, tickets from now are averaging around the $650 mark for a return ticket. I got my hotel booked but should I bother waiting for cheaper tickets or do you think prices will be the same no matter what considering it’ll be near Easter time?

  • I'd wait for the next sale but given it's around a holiday in both countries it may be tricky.

There is a airfare sale to New Zealand at least once a month.

  • Depends where you're landing. Some places like snow areas (Queenstown) have peak seasons, whereas some areas are good all year round.

  • It’ll be Queenstown if it helps. Seems because of the timing I’ll be out of luck though aye ?

    • My tickets were $800 return for a mid year flight, peak ski season. March might either be not-quite-yet in season or beginning of the skiing season. Be prepared to go bankrupt in Queenstown though.

    • Hey! If you're new to OzBargain-level-travel here's a few more very basic tips.

      (1) Yes, the destination in a country often makes a huge difference, even when the flight time differences are negligible. A lot of the amazing fares you see to New Zealand are to Auckland or Christchurch.

      (2) The airline you use and required baggage allowance can make a huge difference. Did you compare inclusions?

      (3) When you're an OzBargainer, you travel when you can, not when work, school or the government says it's time to go. If you're in a high salary position with fixed work days it's often not worth staying an extra day to spend potential flight savings on accommodation, unless you actually wanted to skip work. Teachers and families with kids obviously don't have the same number of options. You'll find that a lot of specials exclude popular days anyway.

This is very trivial information but I notice my peak-season, non-OzBargain-checking, "weekend-away" type of travelling friends are often unaware and I've become out of touch with the common folk.

      • Thanks for the detailed response I had a look at inclusions and time differences and there still around that price. I think the cheapest was like $570 from jet star with only 7kg on board luggage and like a 9pm flight so I lose the day anyways. I’d rather pay the $80 extra.

  • Really? It’s expensive? I heard it’ll be about the same as living here (Sydney)?

    • Loose beans in Queenstown cost about $18/kg, so you tell me!

  • Hmmm changes booking to Bali

      • My bad lol, thanks.

        • Queenstown is really really beautiful though, especially if there's enough snow (hence peak season), worth every cent imo.

        • @Ughhh:

I’m only going a week so I should be right but I was hoping to save a bit more on tickets. I’ll give a month or so then I’ll probably just book em.
