Basic Phone for Use with ALDI Mobile

Hi,
I would appreciate any suggestions for a cheap basic phone (candy bar or flip) for a relative that will be used for emergency use only.

Will a Telstra prepaid work or does it have to be unlocked?
eg Aust Post have a Telstra Cruise on special for $14.50.
Otherwise a good seniors phone (with SOS button) seems to be the Aspera F24 but these are $100 on Ebay (any cheaper options?).
I did some searching & some people seem to say they found one that does, others say it needs to be unlocked. Maybe they changed to block prepaid phones.

If none of the prepaids work with Aldi, are there any other cheap Telcos that have SIMs that work with prepaid phones?

To keep it simple, it just needs to be an old style "dumb" phone with buttons (not a smart phone).

Thanks,

Gary.

  • Some phones are pretty easy to unlock to be used with any carrier. ZTE and Huawei phones are the best ones to buy if you want a all-purpose and all-telco compatible phone.

Feature phones or dumb phones are actually harder and slightly costlier to unlock, just look at eBay for the phone you're using and append "unlock code" and you'll see lots of unlock code sellers.

  • Aldi uses Telstra wholesale network so a cheap Telstra prepaid phone will work.

  • Xiaomi Redmi Note 4x

Thanks for the suggestion, but its beyond their budget (max $100, preferably a lot less) & they don't want a smart phone.

      • My bad, I skimmed the post. Good luck

  • If you're a Telstra customer or can borrow someone's Telstra number, you can grab a Nokia 3310 from JB Hi-Fi for $80. Probably pricey for you and texting seems a lot more painful compared to my old Nokia 3315 but it does qualify as a dumb phone!

  • Recently bought Telstra tempo at Coles for $24.50 for wife..works with Aldi Sim..was still on sale yesterday.
