Nokia N97 Mini on Easy Cap 19 ($0 handset repayment) with Virgin Mobile through Allphones

120

The best price directly from Virgin on a same $19 24mth contract comes with a $5 monthly handset repayment but first 3mth access is free, so the maths works out to be:

Virgin: $5 X 24 + $19 X (24-3) = $519
Through Allphones: $19 X 24 = $456

Imho an okay deal if you don't call/test/web a lot since a $19 Cap only gives you $50 call credit and 50MB data. Would be better if you have your mates/family members on Virgin as well since calls/tests are free between Virgin mobile members.

I think this model is roughly one year old since launch last year. If you're not that into Android/Win 7/iOS and can tolerate Symbian and just want a 'fashion' phone then N97 Mini is quite up to scratch. It's got both touch screen for general use and keybord for messaging/texting.

  • Just a side note: You can't get any other language through its browser but English and Philipino [wtf] on the Australian N97.
Unless you change the product code.. and update it so you can change it to the desired language (never done it before)

    • Have you tried using Opera Mini for other language support?

EDIT: I meant Opera Mobile, that's the better one.

      • Where the hell do you get that..
And no I haven't. It's my mum who uses it, =P

You can grab it from opera.com or get it from the OVI store on your phone. It's a lot better than the built in browser (e.g. tabbed browsing, faster loading of pages etc.)

Opera Mobile is great too… feels more 'native'. also available from opera.com.

Yeah, sorry. Opera Mobile is a lot better than Mini.

        • I've always used Opera Mobile, but the new Opera Mini is great as well. Get the latest beta version from m.opera.com, and it'a a native Symbian app rather than a Java app. Makes the previous version look like a slow old dog.

  • I have one and I wouldn't call it a fashion phone. Nokia has thrown everything and the kitchen sink (e.g. GPS with driving/walking voice directions) into the phone for free which is great but the downside is that the battery life is quite poor and the OS tends to crash (even with the numerous firmware updates).

Changing the product code is easy, just have to use NSS and then change it's product code that belongs to another region (Hong Kong for example, if you want Chinese language support).

Once you've done that, hook your phone up to a computer running Ovi Suite and then flash it's firmware.
Doing this of course, voids your warranty, so don't bother purchasing the extended warranty if you plan to do this.

This phone is ridiculously cheap now on contracts, they must be trying to get rid of their stock fast.

Samsung Wave is a better phone for the same price. http://www.virginmobile.com.au/shop/ProductChooser/GetProduc…

    • Agreed, $19 per month for a phone with AMOLED touchscreen, 1ghz processor, and a touch UI that doesn't suck, it's a no brainer.

      • …unless your main use is for messaging - sms/mms/emails/IM. A hardware keyboard is stacks better than a flat touch keyboard. The N97 Mini's camera is pretty decent too.

        • True to both of those accounts. Decent flash too. You can download Swype for the N97 if you prefer using the touch keyboard.

        • The Samsung has Swype.

        • I have swype on my htc desire, but typing on a physical keyboard is still quicker.
Surprisingly, I find smaller keyboards even faster - the E71's keyboard is absolutely fantastic. With hardware keyboards, my right thumb can already be resting on the next letter while my left thumb is pressing the previous letter. And while i'm pressing that next letter with my right thumb, my left thumb would already have moved to the letter after that. "zero wait state" typing. With a multi-touch keyboard, your finger has to move up and away from the screen before travelling to the next key. You can't slide them around to feel the next key.

But, I suppose, to each his own. Slower typists might find a touchscreen keyboard just fine, as they might not be able to hit high speeds regardless of keyboard anyway.

I got this on the NRMA voda deal for 49/month for 12 months. 3 months free + 10% off life of contract + 50 credit. Works out to be a bit over 350.
