Stolen Bike - Security Camera etc

Last night 4 bikes got stolen from my house. 3 of them are kids bikes and one is folding bike. The bikes got stolen from near the entrance of the house under the carport. My kids usually don't lock the bikes as they think it is safe in the carport… Not anymore though.

The interesting part is that two of the bikes were found dumped in the back alley. Those bikes were fairly small and probably the thieves gave up riding those. One bike is for my teenage kid and that couldn't be found even after searching the neighboring streets. I have reported the theft to the police, but don't have any hope of getting the bike back.

The thieves even had time to rummage through the shed but they didn't find anything useful.

Currently, I planning to do the following…

  1. Install the Xiaomi yeelight bulb and set it so that it turns on at 10:00 pm and switches off at 6 am.

  2. Lock up the backyard gate and the shed.

  3. Keep the dog inside the house so the dog can alert us if anything is going on in the front yard/car port.

  4. Thinking of installing a security camera.

  5. Keep the bikes under the pergola in the backyard, rather than under the carport.

Any other suggestions worth considering? Any help is appreciated.

Lock up all bikes . Is kids playing fun with small bikes like monkey bike

    • Agreed. I did tell my kid a number of times to do it, but teenagers are a bit hard to get through.

Out of site first, locked second. Sounds very opportunistic.

    • Yes, it does look that way. Wouldn't hurt as much if they took my road bike instead of my kid's.

The kids might have learnt a valuable lesson, especially if it takes some time and effort to replace them. The lesson won't be learnt nearly as well if the bikes are replaced pronto.

Bikes won't be getting replaced until Christmas at the very least.

Register the bikes at the Bike Vault.

    • Thanks. Didn't know about this.

      • No problem, there are lots of reports of bikes finding their way back to owners via Police because they were registered here.

  • Buy a SmartHalo for the bikes - When they approach it sets off an alarm.

  • Try to get an ip tracker for the Bike or as @fergy1987 said get a SmartHalo and when someone approaches it, it will go off like crazy
