Buy from Shopmonk or Officeworks?

Really badly want the moto G5 plus.
Should I buy it from shopmonk: https://shopmonk.com.au/motorola-moto-g5-plus?color=4197&sto… for $277 for the 4gb/32gb model. Or From officeworks for $275.50 (price matching and then 5% off) https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/motorola-m… one is the 3gb/16gb model.
Only thing I'm worried about is warranty and shopmonk doesn't look that great according to some people but then other people says it great. I'm seriously confused. Any help would be appreciated.

There isn't any reason to expect Officeworks will feel obliged to Price Match let alone offer a further 5% discount.

Agreed upon price matching mobileCiti. The guy was pretty happy to do it

If you ask this question, my advise is stay away from them.

I did a lot of online search related to shopmonk, they operate online shops in India (HQ) and Singapore. shopmonk.com.au is a virtual shop without Australian presence, even their previous local Australian number is VOIP number.

Edit: Ok the votes say it pretty well. I was leaning towards officeworks anyway and then I don't have to wait for shipping.

    • OMG… How many overseas sellers have an australian presence? Gearbest, banggood, etc…??

      • +1

I think you misunderstood my reference about Australian presence.

Gearbest did not have a .com.au domain
Gearbest did not subscribed to an Australian phone number virtually forwarding to overseas.

banggood did not have a .com.au domain
banggood did not subscribed to an Australian phone number virtually forwarding to overseas.

shopmonk is not Australian company, but using loophole to register a .com.au domain
shopmonk is not Australian company but pretend to have Australian support number which was later removed.

From the above 3 examples, shopmonk clearly has an intention to make customers feel like they are Australian.

If we assumed everything you said is correct, then Officeworks for sure, Australian stock, full Australian warranty and cheaper.

But most likely Officeworks won't price match Shopmonk because they are a grey stock dealer selling from overseas, so the comparison is more like
    Officeworks: $339
    Shopmonk: $277

Real difference is $62, which is why people shop at Shopmonk since its obviously quite a bit cheaper, just you risk your warranty over it. (Though I'd probably pay the extra and get Aus stock).

To be fair though you might still be able to hit up JH Hifi, Mobileciti etc to price match with Officeworks, see if you can bring that difference down a little bit more.

I was tired what I meant was that I can price match mobile cities price and get a 5% off. Pretty good?

If you want to see Shopmonk BS read here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/310554

    • Wow.

      • It's no contest in this scenario, if the local product is remotely close to the same price then it is the one to choose. Having said that, my purchasing experience, along with many others with Shopmonk was good to say the least, I can comment about the returns policy though as I haven't had to use it, they also did have one deal recently with stock and communication problems, this is hardly surprising to me given they are a cheap price supplier. There seems to be a few here on OzBargain though that have it in for Shopmonk based on some admittedly dodgy looking initial eBay feedback, it all seems like a bit of an overreaction to me though tbh.

    • Lol… in the comments the shopmonk rep said he/she is in Yarraville, VIC.

What bull$hit. It is beyond me why anyone would buy from that store.

      • -2

If you want prices that no aust based supplier can compete with, a perfect product and dhl delivery.. ??
A lot of those negative comments about shopmonk are bull$hit… you will find negative comments about every overseas supplier if you care to look. I have ordered from many and overall I would say shopmonk is clearly the best.
On the other hand if you want the lowest price in the market with B&M local support then good luck… you can't have it both ways.

        • You are wrong, rep has lied about several things and it has been proven.

        • @tranter:
These overseas suppliers can be a bit odd… ALL OF THEM.. got it?
If you are scared something bad may happen to you then just purchase through PP using your CC.. double whammy comeback if something nasty happens to you..
I recommend you do that with ALL overseas purchases.
I would buy off shopmonk without hesitation..

        • @tranter: Can you offer anything akin proof that the rep isn't in Yarraville Vic or did you just lie about it? I would think that if the rep was claiming to be somewhere they weren't then the mods would have banned him based on his IP address by now.

        • @tranter:
All these dodgy Chinese sellers have lied and are lying about everything all the time. You know who I'm talking about, just go to the front page and 80% of the listed bargains there are theirs. Unfortunately, they have some sort of immunity, although they are clearly an unprofessional mob.

        • @tryagain:

Just to chime in here. Whilst I'm not going to comment on any individuals information, I will add to what tryagain has already mentioned. As per our terms of use:

You must provide current, accurate identification, contact, and other information that may be required as part of the registration process and/or continued use of the Service.

If a store rep has a fake location in their profile then that location will simply be removed. We ask that users add their location accurately or not at all. Should you ever suspect a member to have a false location in their profile (eg their profile says Sydney but you believe they are posting from outside of Australia), please report them and if found to be true we'll remove that location so users aren't mislead. There isn't any issue with the member in question.

          Thanks

        • @hamza23: I think @tryagain was referring to @shopmonk's comment about them having presence in Yarraville. Not about them stating their location in the profile.

Shopmonk is clearly an overseas company, but in various comments, stating that they have office/warehouse in Australia and offering to show proof of photos which was not shown.

        • @jpl:

Sure, sorry I'm not up to date with those past comments regarding the office/warehouses nor was my comment in regards to that. Just to clarify, I was only commenting about the account holders location and nothing to do with their business or business location. Specifically in reply to "shopmonk rep said he/she is in Yarraville, VIC." and "anything akin proof that the rep isn't in Yarraville Vic" comments.

          Thanks for clearing that up.

        • @jpl: Yes, that's one of the shady parts of all this. Right from the start with their comments and even today on their website they are deceitful and try to give the impression that they have a local presence in Australia.

  • shopmonk doesnt have good warranty, The fact that they will post you a return envelope and you ship it back. Mate had an issue with his S8 firmware which meant that he had to ship his phone to Yarraville and they wont accept performing the repair. The phone was purchased of a smuggled grey market in Malaysia, shipped to Singapore (backdoor entry) and then sold for a price to Aus. If you really want the phone to be looked after assuming an earthquake proof phone is made available next year then this is the best option.

OMG… almost nothing you buy from overseas has a reputable warranty… :-(
You get the product at a dirt cheap price.. and if something goes wrong you buy another, most times you are usually still in front.

It is as simple as this…
If you want the "B&M hold your hand" customer service then go to your local retailer and pay the price. Dont cry like a baby because you want the lowest price available from overseas but cant get the hand holding experience with personal support as well. You can't have both, something has to be sacrificed to get the low price.

You should weigh up the risks and the benefits with every overseas purchase. I would draw the line on expensive things.. say anythng over $200, but then again that is up to the individual and it is their choice if they want to take the risk with a product becomming faulty. Non supply is never a problem if you buy right.
If it is all to complicated and scary for you then just go to your local store and stop bleating.. :-(

      • LOL.. all those negs.. tissue skins cant handle the truth.. :-)

    • Mate.. for a start buying a $800 phone from os is just nuts anyway.
Name a grey market supplier that will provide local warranty service just as you would expect from your corner store? It is damn rare and a known factor when you grab the bargain price in the first place.
Also who is to know that the end user has not screwed the phone themselves? The first thing many do when they receive them is to try to modify them for some unknown and unnecessary reason. It goes wrong and then they blame the world. :-(
Where did you get the smuggling fairy tale from? Sounds like a school yard yarn.

  • the shopmonk dude tried to bribe my mate with a negative feedback and they scammed him. Never trust a greymarket wolf in a sheep's clothing. The fact that QC35 sold for a poor price, I expect quality and this seller must be stopped trading in Australia !!!

    • You purchased through their ebay store? From what I see their prices there are higher than their own site so why buy there?

"the shopmonk dude tried to bribe my mate with a negative feedback and they scammed him"
The real details of that would be interesting…

You do not HAVE TO shop there you know…

      • 20% ebay offer - $254 for QC35 almost Ozbargain of the year 2017

Update: Going to buy from officeworks today. Pretty excited for my new phone. Thanks everyone for commenting.

  • Your not worried about only having 16GB vs 32GB???

One of the things I have found annoying with my Z3 Compact…

    • +1

      Expandable, no?

      • Yes, but still have to keep transferring to SD whenever I update apps…I'm at the limit where I have to pick and choose apps and also update a few at a time then, transfer, then update…annoying.

        • Pretty sure the newer versions of Android just view an SD as additional storage and you don't have to manage it, happy to be corrected if I am wrong.

        • @tryagain: From what I've read, yes android allows it but most phone manufacturers disable it, so you have to root the phone if you want to do it.

        • @John Kimble: That would make sense, manufacturers want to charge a premium for additional memory, as the Moto G is pretty close to stock android I am guessing they haven't?

        • @tryagain: I think they disable it to prevent catastrophic failures if people accidentally remove the SD card…it would be like a HDD failing in a raid 0 array perhaps?

        • +1

Yes, but still have to keep transferring to SD whenever I update apps

And not all apps are transferable to SD card.

    • It's expandable fairly sure

  • You're protected under the ACCC if you shop at Officeworks so you're better off buying Australian Stock

The Australian consumer guarantee is only enforceable if you take the retailer to a tribunal and pay the costs. The outcome of that is never guaranteed and that is why very few ever do it. It is not worth the paper it is written on. Australia has virtually no consumer protection at all.

Most of the people who cry on here should never buy from overseas sources if they want the hold your hand service it really is that simple.
They must also understand that they will pay a higher price for that luxury and should not compare or ask for price matching with prices from international traders for that very reason.

I have never seen anything that "FORCES" anyone to buy from international traders…??

  • things to note. even though their ad says 4g/32g its infact only 3g/32g (i learnt the hard way) and having been emailing their shop email, shop rep here and tried calling the number they provided (doesnt even connect).

still waiting to hear from the oz rep on this forum after 3 days. my next step is to go through a refund process from paypal.
you know what my advice would be ….

    • I have just figured out you must be talking about a IPhone you purchased from them???
Do you have a link to their ad for the one you purchased?
If you paid thru PP using CC then you have no problem at all if the product supplied is not the one advertised.
Have you taken a screen capture of their ad you claim to be misleading? Best to do that before they change it.
Your invoice shows the spec of the one you ordered anyway… does it?

      • nope the moto g5 plus.
the ad on here says "$277 for the 4gb/32gb model", the RAM is infact only 3 gig and not 4g.

  • Go to officeworks or ebay with austocks. I tried communicating with shopmonks customer service 3 weeks ago and still no reply.

    • I went with officeworks and got a SD card total of $290. Going from IOS to Android was a pretty big move.

  • Contact my iPhone order with shopmonk, got a robot reply everytime, not helping. Told me received next Tuesday, which is 2 days away and still no track number show it’s been post.
So I don’t think will receive the phone on time, after waited for 1 month, pretty disappointed
