Please recommend a noise-cancelling earbud

I needed one for travelling - I don't listen to music while travelling, it was purely for reading on the airplane, so I value lightness and noise-cancellation properties, not the music quality. Been looking for a while thank!

    • I know you are probably joking, but in case you aren't, I personally wouldn't choose them because my earholes start aching after a short period using those foam type ones. Feels like they are constantly trying to expand in my ears, almost verging on pressure pain or lack of blood circulation. Is it just me??? Perhaps I have small earholes?

Anyhoo, I prefer to use these: SurgiPack Antinois Ear Plugs - 3 Pairs

I use them if missus is snoring or if I happen to go out to a noisy pub, club or karaoke room (rare these days). Can be re-used multiple times until they get a bit manky and don't stay in any more.

I actually only use half of one per ear, so get 6 pairs per packet!

        Same.

        Edit: misread earhole

    Bose QC35
    /thread

  • I've got a pair of audio-technicas, cost around $100 and do a decent job for the money. I haven't compared them to the Bose though, way out of my price range.

Yeah I have those too - they work well but after a few hours they make my ears ache. I fly 14h flights on a regular basis and after a while I didn't want to use the earbuds anymore.

TightBottom might have posted it as a joke, but seriously OP get some foam earplugs - they cost next to nothing, are way more comfortable than any earbuds can be and actually stand a chance against the crying baby that inevitably finds its way into the plane. Noise cancelling gear helps to cut out the background drone of the airplane itself, but does little against dialogue or other higher frequency sounds. The ultimate silencing solution I've found is to wear the earplugs and then put on some NC headphones over the top - I use Audio Technica ANC-7b headphones which work well but are a tad uncomfortable, but the Bose QC25 or QC35 are definitely the top dogs for noise cancellation and comfort.

Okay, that sounds like a good idea, earplugs then NC headphones. I already got over-ear NC headphones just a bit too big to carry.

Doubling up works well, when we have to use helo's the noise level is way above the threshold of passive noice protection so while boarding we have to wear Ear plugs and ear muffs, the plugs can be removed once onboard and doors are shut but rarely do depending on travel time, you want to aim for something that is class 5

This is a good guide for working out what you need to reduce (dB) level by over time.

Some people expect noise cancelling to drown everything but it can only respond well to constant noise, People or babies are so varied in pitch and frequency there is no silver bullet, which is why you can't beat isolation, I prefer isolation earbuds for travel over my Bose QC35's they just work better IMO, but it's an each to their own and whats good for one isn't always good for someone else.

  • I bought a pair of the Bose QC 20 when they were on special when the wireless ones were brought out. They work well, but the price appears to be up again at the moment. You might want to see if you can get a discount from the Bose store as they have a 30 day money back if you don’t like them. I also have a Bose QC 15 and the noise isolation on these is better, just a bit less comfortable than the buds.

  • Why not drop into local 3m store tell em what you're looking for and you can normally come away with a handful of samples to try out, ear plugs are definitely a personal thing, some people find some comfortable others not, some people don't know how to use them right,

The other option is goto an audiologist they can make you custom ones which are better than anything else you can buy and reusable if sound is the only factor, for peace and quiet to read. both options take up less room and weigh less than any headphones / ear buds

If you travel a lot for work you can get work to pay for the Audiologist to make the plugs or tax deduct the expense. PPE

Thank you for the link - that helps a lot!

  • Have you tried using memory foam tips for a pair of IEMs? I’m practically deaf to the outside world with those things on. Comply tips or just generic ones from China are more than enough for isolation.

    • I didn't know they exist! Will checkout.

    • Yeah, but you are playing music, right? OP sounded like they didn't want to play any music?

    • +1 for comply for blockout pads for earbuds, they replace the existing pads.
