Car Insurance - Listing Drivers May Save You Money

Hey guys,

I recently had my car insurance renewal (AAMI) arrive in the mail, and owning a V8 Commodore, I was interested in seeing how adding drivers affected the premium.
My quoted premium for a 2014 SS Commodore/25 year old male driver, was $830.
When I added my 24 year old girlfriend (even though she's on her P Plates and isn't allowed to drive my vehicle), the premium dropped to $780

A bit of a catch 22, having her listed and unable to drive legally, but a saving is a saving!

I also tried this with my other Hyundai i30, and the same thing happened.

TL;DR: Add people to car insurance, regardless of age or eligibility to drive. It might save you cash

Not sure if it's all companies, or just AAMI. Or even just an isolated case. But worth trying :)

If it saves 1 person some money, it's worth my time to type it out.

Sorry if you feel as if your time has been wasted.

      • Was this an online quote?

If so, I would call them directly.

I have playing with their QTE online quoting for many years and I call them directly. They usually do a better deal.

IMO, their online quoting systems is dodgy. I have never seen an Insurance company that is address specific like AAMI rather than suburb.

I would query about adding your GF and if the addition requires any further details. For example, they would also need her driving history etc. Tell them that the quote is cheaper and why?

They might honour $780 without the addition of your GF, considering she is not legally covered.

For $50 savings, it is not worth jeopardising your insurance cover hence call them to be on the safe side.

        Good luck.

        Cheers

        • G'day mate,

Yeah this was on the phone! I did it online, and confirmed it over the phone. I didn't mention the P Plates.

They just asked her date of birth and if she had and claims/disqualifications in the previous 3 years. Mind you, she won't drive my car, but $50 is $50! :)

        • @BensonP:

          G'day Benson

Yes, I understand your rationale of the savings and good for you however I am very wary when it comes to insurance companies, especially disclosures.

You do have a Duty of Disclosure to declare anything that may influence them to either change or cancel your policy so honesty is the best policy.

I guess if you have answered all the questions that they have asked then IMO it's OK. Please check your Policy. They record the conversation over the phone for future reference.

Please read their PDS and look more into it.

You have a nice car (regardless) however if god forbid an accident occurs, they might not cover you or the other third party.

          Just a thought.

You wouldn't be here if you were not concerned :-)

          Cheers

  • Awesome will try it as my renewal is approaching soon

  • Hmm, I will try let you know.

  • Try this:

Do an online quote using the SAME information … car specs…, garaged at night… . etc …. HOWEVER change to your neighbours address.

Then change the address again to your neighbours across the road.

Then compare the price to your address.

Then please get back to me if the quote has changed LOL … and by how much compared to your address.

Lucky your with "Variable quote" AAMI!

  • It's because females are proven to be driving safer than males.

If you had added a 21 year old guy to the policy, it might increase the premium.

It's all statistics, they are predicting future accidents rate based on historical data.

  • Same thing happened to my renewal with Suncorp when I added my brother to my policy.
We have the exact same driving history.
Doesn't make sense to me but it's cheaper so that's all I cared about.
