I’ve bitten the bullet and entered the “Authentic Marathon” from the Greek town of Marathonas running 42.2km to the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens on 12 Nov, retracing the steps of Pheidippides in 490BC (possibly a bit slower and hopefully with a more fortunate ending). I have never been to Greece before and so am looking for advice and tips for the trip. I’m travelling alone, landing in Athens on the Tuesday before the run and flying home on the Friday after it. I haven’t booked accommodation yet but intend to pretty soon (probably somewhere within staggering distance of the finish line). I’ve read the touristy stuff but would be grateful for any ideas on less mainstream things to do while there, including day trips away from Athens. Also has anyone run this marathon before or is also running it this year?

I’ve added that to the plan for next year when I go back with the wife. The island looks spectacular. Thanks.
Don't have anything useful to offer, but looks like an amazing event, and one to add to the wishlist.
I'm jealous. Enioy !!Do you like to party? Mykonos.
Or check out the Monasteries in Meteora :)
Mykonos may not be doable, but the monasteries probably are. Thanks.
After landing in Athens with jet lag cancel marathon, make your way to Santorini and enjoy your relaxing holiday.

If so desired go for a jog around the island.
Thank me when you get home.
