Help with Xiaomi Yeelights RGB

Hey guys.

I bought a one of the coloured Yeelights from gearbest a couple weeks ago. I've finally got it, but I'm having terrible getting it to connect.

As of now, I can detect the bulb, and my phone can connect, but it never connects to the router.

I've successfully connected to a hotspot on an iPhone, and a hotspot on Android (without security only for Android).

I'm using mainland China as server. Tried in both Yeelight app, and mi home app.

Since everyone here has one of these, had anyone had any trouble? Any advice would be nice.

Edit:
Using 2.4ghz network
Have tried using Singapore server with no luck.

  • Have you tried with Singapore as the server? My understanding was to only use the China server if you’re in China.

  • I'm using Singapore server (I think its reccomended?) Though I think in the Yeelight app you can set it to LAN? Is user isolation off (I think it should be?)

    • I see the option to set to lan, but don't understand what it does. Also don't know what user isolation is.

      • Don't know if it helps but for me, I had initial connection problems with mine and had to restart the yeelight (I think turn it on and off 5 times, but check the manual, it should flash when it resets?) and it worked fine after that, you can run an update on the firmware on the lights which was first thing I did incase it helped connection? Might also be worth doing if you can connect by hotspot.

Not sure if it takes the wifi info from your phone, but might be worth double checking it (I know unlikely)

I /think/ (not fully sure) user isolation isolates devices so other devices can't connect to it. It's usually a settings on your router and usually disabled but thought just incase.

        • I did update it when it was connected to my phone, but nothing much changed. Lots of people online said it just worked one day. Guess i'll just try tomorrow.

I have another light coming soon, hopefully it'll work better. At this point i'm blaming the router.

  • check that your phone is not connected to a 5ghz network. Your yeelights are not capable of using 5ghz connections.

  • Have also tried Singapore server without luck.
    Network is 2.4ghz.

    What is user isolation sorry?

  • Check what channel your router is using for the 2.4GHz. Maybe try it set between 1 and 11.

    • Interesting, I'll give it a go.

    • No luck

      • what about encryption method? Are you using WPA-AES or WPA2-PSK? Try changing to a different method.

        For reference mine is WPA2-Personal

  • I also had a problem reconnecting my lightbulbs on a diff router, it would get the time out at 99% but it was ok on my hotspot? Checked the ping packet thingo from the forum but had no idea what was wrong. I downloaded the original Mi app and tried it there (also timed out) but later on I opened the app again and the light bulb was there.

Although now I have updated the lightbulb version and it works fine. I would say keep trying, I reset my bulb like 30x until it finally worked..

  • 2.4 or 5ghz won't matter as they will connect to the same network.

Best method for success so far is

    1. Use MiHome
    2. Set to Singapore server (not US Singapore)
    3. Ensure phone has Bluetooth turned on
    4. Discover new device

Should not need to connect directly to the bulb, and get rid of any hotspots. During the device provisioning you'll connect to the bulb with BT at which time you give it the wifi details for your home network.
