you lucky then, i am an existing customer and been trying to get onto this plan and they wont do it they said it's only for new customer. So they rather loose a customer then to keep one. Unbelievable, i hope Optus read this thread as i am see quiet a few negative with their customer service and i can attest to that as well. Look like i be jumping ship to virgin mobile deal at the moment https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/335761

I called them got the same reply. The guy was pretty relaxed and we had a good chat but said the offer is for new services to an existing account only. He confirmed that moving my Optus month-to-month plan to another provider and returning would not see me get this offer.

Just a headsup. Been working in the Telco market for about 15 years and there are predictions that almost all plans will go to unlimited (but shaped for fair use) data in the next year or so.

When TPG drops into the market prices will drop a lot. That is why all these guys are scrambling to get punters on contracts.

    • Any good deal from TPG?

      • That's what the telcos are scared off. TPG dropping into the market with a rock bottom offer.

        6 months at $10 p/m then $19.99 for 1.5GB, $550 included value.

6 months at $24.99 p/m then 39.99 for 12GB, unlimited calls and texts, 100 international minutes.

good deal, optus customer service = biggest PITA ever. signed up last time this was on. eventually lodged a complaint with the TIO due to complete BS. gave me my 1st month free and now waiting to see what 2nd month bill will be.
somehow the 1st month doesn’t get discounted, it’s calculated pro rata, optus sport is a $15 extra, you’ll see a $5 & $10 credit by the 2nd bill, the deal you signed up for isn’t on our now updated website…. it didn’t end.
$30 a month for 12 months, that’s what the damn contract says. that’s what i should pay.
still don’t have optus sport. not worth the hassle.

  • I'm gonna try Amaysim after all the screwups by optus.they will never get things right.

    NEW BLOODY SERVICE ONLY!! AHH

    Hey,

I received a sales call from Optus today as I'm on a really old turbo pre-paid plan that is $50 a month with unlimited talk and text, 3GB data, and unlimited social media (except I can never really see if that is the case and what social media comes under)

I was talking to the guy and here are the pros of the deal. So it's $30 per calendar month (as any prepaid is only for 28 days) since there are 4.345 weeks in a month, so really I'm paying for 13 months currently.

    So it's 13x50 = $650 versus 12x30 = $360 which is a $290 saving per year.

I also explained I don't like contracts based on the fact you have to pay them out if you want to leave. His response to this was that to cancel from day 1 its $144 and then for every month it drops down by $12 as $12x12 = $144.00 (please double check though that they will be honouring the same deal)

So even if in 6 months TPG comes out with a better deal and I pay $72 I have already saved $120 leaving it a difference of $48 saved should I change my deal 6 months into the contract.

I haven't really thought of many cons besides the fact that all their physical stores just sell phone cases and the staff have no idea about any of the plans but they do know the number for India so they got the job…

If you can think of any reason I should sign up tomorrow please let me know now.

    Thanks

  • Wow, they sure do require a lot of information when you sign up for this deal.. aside from requiring my driver's licence information, which is reasonable, they require to know if I own/rent/buy/board/other/live with parents at my current residence, they want to know how long I've lived there, they want to know what my occupation is, what my occupation type is, and what field I work in.

    • They require to do a credit check which requires all the information you just listed. Hope that clears it up.

  • +1

I am currently having the same plan but $40/month that I signed up 3 months ago, so I still have 9 months of contract. Chat to a Sales Rep today, he said I can definitely get this offer by paying a break fee of around $90, change to Prepaid. Once the change has completed, just wait 4-5 hours, no need to recharge, then contact Customer service to switch back to Postpaid and require this Deal. It should be no problem. I even asked the Sales Rep to email me the Chat transcription so they can't deny it. Cheers

    • You wouldn't be gaining much by breaking your contract as you have to pay the difference anyway ($40-$30 = $10/month over 9 months = $90) and in 9 months there could well be a better plan available, while you'll still be committed to this one for another 3 months. If they let you recontract for free, sure, but if they make you pay I would just stick with it if it were me.

I have found Optus data usage to be VERY dodgey and many people are making similar complaints.

I had 12gb data with free Spotify and I was regularly going over
I complained that my Spotify must be metered and I was assured it wasn't. There's no way I was using more than that when Spotify is the main days usage I use.

I ported to the Telstra JB HiFi offer a month ago. I am using my phone in the same manner and using Spotify (which is metered on Telstra) ..

Mmm guess what, data usage was lower.

    Be warned.

    • +2

to be honest i had the same experience .. even tho they claim music data to be free there are months i break 8gb.. on my phone when the most usage was on spotify.. furthermore i was using wifi most of the time at home. i really think there is sth wrong with the metering

      • The issue is there's no way to check what is being used, besides those pie charts and then a bar graph with the total about of data used per day…

    • Are you using Spotify only on your phone (i.e. not tethering to another device/PC?)

    • Did you actually turn on free music streaming on your MyAccount page?

  • I used this deal as bargaining chip with Telstra Live chat and was able to get their MX plan for $39/mth instead of $49/mth and 10GB of data.

  • +2

Signed up for this on the last deal.

    • They charged $60 for the first month and only partly corrected this to $40 after hours on the phone to them and refused to properly fix the bill.
    • They will sign you up to sms spam by default
    • Make sure you don't sign up to the default postage bills to save $2
    • They will sign you up to email spam by default
    • They will activate your account by default after a few days with no notice so if you change your mind make sure you cancel otherwise you will randomly loose service at no notice (obviously my responsibility to cancel just feels strange process)
    • If you're like me and with another optus seller your account may not work and you will need to contact online chat for hours to setup an account and port your number manually (had to speak to three consultants).

Other than that the price is good.

  • +2

I had enough of their customer service and billing system I paid to get out of it aka early termination, in a short 10 months they billed me incorrectly twice and both times I had to get the TIO involved. Never again.

  • +1

Does someone else feels they are being charged for spotify streaming on Optus?

    • I think I am but not 100% sure. In the data breakdown I have used 10% on spotify right now, does anyone have the same problem? I definitely got the activation sms from optus before I started streaming spotify.

    • +1

I asked Optus about this and they claimed that their user monitoring/display system isn't' sophisticated enough to separate music streaming out when looking at usage, but that it's not billed?

Now, if they can't tell what's music for the pie charts, how can they know which bits don't go to the allowance?

That said, with Spotify and data on I only come up to about 4GB a month at maximum, so I'm well within limits, but if I was edging max usage I'd be wanting to KNOW they can accurately meter the billable and non billable parts of the service.

Optus, a Telco you can't speak to on the phone!

      • +2

I had a funny conversation with service team about this few weeks ago. They insisted that it is only unmetered if I play from play list and not shuffle or change songs. Does not make sense to me. Oh well. I knew what I've signed up for.

    • +1

Quite sure it's happening to me on Google Play Music. Live chat insisted it's all set up correctly their end. I need time to test properly but have noticed big data usage after streaming for an hour or two.

    • Use Google Music and havent noticed anything dodgy yet.

I have just purchased kogan 30gb every mth sim only, for 1yr $327 upfront works out under $28 mth.

  • why many bad stories about optus? damn just like vaya and posts about taking days to process/port, terrible service!

  • I'm already on their $40p/month ($30 due to that friends/family discount) for 12GB

    Can I "upgrade" to this?

    • read the post from beginning there are some stories about upgrading - then ask optus after that share your story here

  • How is Optus in Sydney CBD and in Sydney west, around Bellavista to be specific . I have Vodafone and very satisfied. But this is a ripper deal.

    • I've been on Optus for about a year using it around Bella Vista, CBD and North Shore and rarely get any dropouts. Very happy so far!

  • Sigh optus is so useless I tried signing up to this deal last time (mind you we were current customers with our cable internet already and another mobile) it was on and then said it was referred and you'll be called tomorrow (never happened) then the telstra deal with jb came out with the 200 gift card and got that done in 15 minutes, much better deal

  • How come we are paying $30/month for 3GB for my son (who wants Optus Sports, which is extra)? I don't think it is a 12 month contract but we are going to be with them for 12 months. This is crazy…. PS Only reason we are not with Kogan Mobile is because of Optus Sports.

  • +2

    Hi Guys,

For anyone who's currently out-of-contract or recently signed up with the $40 plan, the easiest way to be on this $30 plan is:

    • Call 13 33 45
    • option 2 (recontracting / purchasing a new plan)
    • Once a customer representative picks up the call, ask immediately to be transferred to retention team.
    • Explain your story with respect. Say something like, I'm a existing customer wanting to commit with Optus for a long time. I feel like I should be on the same rate as you're currently offering to new customers, etc.

My outcome was not to be on a new plan, but they just simply applied a 25% discount on my $40 contract, which makes it $30 anyway. I imagine if you're on a our of contract, they can surely put you into the $30 plan. Ideally you should call between business hours when they're not too busy.

With Optus, being an ex-Vodafail customer, I personally feel their signal is much better + international call quality is also much better + Optus sport is fantastic. The only downsize I can think of is that Optus international roaming is stupidly expensive, while Vodafail gives you an option to use roaming at $5 per day for many countries.

    Good luck y'all.

    • I did something similar and it worked out for me!

    • I'll try this tonight, currently I'm on a $90 NBN and 4x$30 mobile accounts with 3gb data each

      • Yh I Tried this 4 times through a few different channels I didn't really expect to get anywhere. The response was yes this is only a deal for new contracts.. I bought 3 family members to Optus.. They could not explain to me why they would offer new customers a better deal than customers that are already with them that wish to re contract for 12 months. My guess is Optus only wants to boost it new connection numbers per month. I think they think that it will improve there share price for Singtel Group. I guess they won't mention how many left.

Anyway then I thought stuff that why am I even trying to give my business to someone who doesn't even seem to want it.

So I signed to Virgin. $40p/m 20%off 15gb per month.

I've decided as a ozbargainer I not going to fight to give company's my business any more.

        We'll see how that goes..

        • +1

Like in many industries and companies now, it'll be because they're reviewed on the amount of new business they can bring in, not on their retention rate. That's a whole different department. Crap way to run a company!

  • Why are the consultants so inconsistent? I had a chat with one yesterday who was PUSHING me to move to this new 12 month contract. Today I asked again and they told me it's not possible…Are they getting different information or just some tactic they are using to F over customers?

    • mate, refer to my comment above, don't talk to 'chat' CS, they don't know a thing-> go straight to retention team and they will sort it out ASAP for you.

      • Yeah no go. Spent an arvo getting transferred around to no avail. They even said there's no retention team, just customer care. Spoke to two different customer care person and a sales guy. Didn't offer me anything to get on another 12 month deal

  • I am an out of contract existing customer and have tried to get on this deal with no success. Both phone conversations to retention and online chat have been a waste of time with them repeating that it is only for new customers. What a shame

  • +2

Same here, I have been a longtime Optus customer and got put through customer service and retention lines and they wouldn't match it then transferred me again and hung up. Just signed with Telstra for $39 and 15gb. I hope Optus loose as many as they sign up, shame too because until now I was quite a loyal Optus customer…….

  • Can deal be upgraded? Expires in November (12 month contract up then). Currently paying $44/month (inc 10% student discount) for 15GB… wonder if they will do it for $27/month with 10% student discount? Hey

  • How is Optus' network? I have been using Boost Mobile for a while but the 15GB of data part looks very very tempting

  • $30 Optus plan with 15gb data vs $32 Virgin mobile plan with 15+3gb data. Isn't the Virgin Mobile plan better?

    • +1

No. It's not 15+3, it's 12+3. 15GB is the total amount of data you get, including the 3GB bonus when you enter the promo code.

      • thats correct.
i have chatted to virgin online and called them to confirm this.
its a total 15gb including the 3gb bonus once enter the promocode datadash. 10gb+2gb extra + 3gb promo bonus.

  • +1

I have a 7-day old $40/mo 15Gb sim only plan and neither sales nor retention team at Optus willing to move me to this new plan. And as what a lot of people already mentioned, they will transfer you or put you on hold, then rudely cut-off the line/chat session. If this is the kind of customer service I will be dealing in the next 12 months, I really want out now. I was with Vodafone for 10+ years and even though their coverage isn't the best everywhere, they do take care of their customers well. I was told I can cancel within 30 days during signup but I can't seem to find their cancellation policy on sim only plans. Does anyone know if there's any?

    • Yep, get used to it, Optus customer service sucks.

      • As many people experience before , you have to speak with different Optus people to make them understand.

    • no i find that Vodafone sucks. they wont refund or credit your money back if something is wrong unless you take them to TIO. Optus took 2 months to help me set up direct debit with optus broandband. Telstra took them forever to fix your adsl internet if something was wrong with the internet => best to go with prepaid and port to diferent provider everymonth :)

      • It is true , they don’t refund the credit no been used anymore . And their current sim plan are so lame

    • The 30 days only applies to 24 months contracts.

This is like with any other deal whether its a telco, food or cars. Lets say you buy a new Corolla for 20k but the next week, the exact same model went down to 18K, you can't just go back to the dealer and ask for a 2k refund.

You missed out, sorry that's reality.

  • Anyone been able to price match for similar plan on Vodaphone?

  • How does it compare to Telechoice $29 plan? Is Optus receiption generally good?

  • Ok I just signed up online via chat.
    Confirmed I got this deal at $30.00 a month with a total of 17GB a month. :)
With the total data, Optus Sports and unmetered music streaming this beats any offer out there.

My Kogan mobile plan finishes in Jan 2018 but I managed to get the rep to delay activation by 30 days so I won't lose out too much

    See the chat transcript below.

So you got $7.50 off a month for 12 months?

special deal for Port Power fans, only $119 a month!

  • Took me whole afternoon and spoke to different sale person thru live chat to get a deal.

  • Debra was the sales person I online chatted with. She was not able to directly give me the offer as I'm an existing post paid customer, but she advised to switch to prepaid and then re-apply for the offer. I agreed and am now waiting for the switch to prepaid to happen and then I will sign up for the offer.

  • +2

I’m an existing Optus customer and my current contract expires in a few weeks. After seeing this deal I’ve had several chat sessions and phone calls asking to be put on this deal but have been rejected everytime saying it’s only for new services. Yesterday afternoon I had one last phone call attempt. Went from Sales, then to Retention, then back to Sales. And when I asked my question for the billionth time, to my shock, the sales rep said no problem. I’m now enjoying the $40/month 15GB SIM only plan for $30/month.

Here’s what I think it is:
    - The deal that is featured in this link includes Optus Sport for FREE but is only for new services
    - The deal I was put on does NOT include Optus Sport (but does include data free music) and is only for existing customers (or so I was told over the phone).

So I reckon have one more phone call attempt and ask for the deal that DOESNT include Optus Sport. It worked for me :)

  • Hi guys,

Can you sign up for the deal but choose when to port over your number? I'm currently with Vodafone and my billing month ends on the 10th. I am no longer on a contract with vodafone though. Do you get sent the pack with the SIM and have to activate it within like a certain number of days?? Thanks!

    • +1

No, others have tried and were even assured by Optus staff that it could be done later, only to find it gets activated automatically when you sign for delivery with the courier.

  • I just spent the last 15 minutes on chat, trying to get an existing out-of-contract plan moved over to this deal. Very much pulling my hair out as well.
I finally asked to escalate to their TL, and the response was it won't make any difference: "When we submit the order, we have to enter your number on our system, the plan will auto detect if existing number, the plan options for that discount is not visible".
However, he did provide me with their retention team number on 1300 555 241 so I might try that on Monday instead (or just move to Virgin).

    • See my comment above, try giving that a go. It might help.

    • You have to port out to tesltra prepaid or voda prepaid then port back into Optus. This is the easiest, hassle free way than speaking to retention to ask for a 10.00 credit per month.

    • Yeah, they don't care!!!
But at least in store told me to do exactly what others are saying.
I didn't even port out, Just switched to pre-paid and now switched back to a plan.

      • So you are saying just go in store and change over to pre paid and then sign up for a contract and you get to keep your number?

        • Yep.
They may say that they know nothing about doing it this way… Whilst they wink at you.
But they say to give it a couple of hours for the pre-paid to kick in, then come back and sign up. (or you could do it online!)
You also get your pre-paid amount credited to your account.

  • God help us all! Telcos in Australia are truly horrible!

  • Managed to switch to pre-paid, then signed up a few hours later for $30 with 17GB + Optus sport with a guy named Quinn M. I had to cite other success stories from OzB as well as Virgin's $40 plan with 18GB (discounted from $50) to get it.

    • How long did you take to switch to pre-paid? I've requested to switch to pre-paid for 2 days already but I still haven't heard anything. Nobody at Optus can tell me what's happening and when the switch to prepaid will be finalised.

      • Took about 11 hours all up. Chatted with rep at 2200, it was done by 0900 the next morning.

  • I was able to get 2gb added to a new service with existing other services. so 17gb/month @30$ + free streaming. No fuss but I did have to politely remind them part way through the acceptance part :)

    • I only have a chat transcript to hold them to account, nothing in my services online say I have an extra 2GB :(

  • I activated a new service on this plan today and already seeing extra data usage through the Optus app… My phone shows 50mb and Optus app shows 260mb. That to in 50mb, around 44mb is Google Play Music usage as per my phone. Which shouldn't count anyways…

Anyone else facing the same issue??

I signed up last week got my sim in 2days using it now and my first bill just came not even 1month yet.

Charge full $40 + $15 optus sports (which i havnt even used)
Final bill $55 due on 8th nov

Thought this was $30month plan with free music stream n optus sports?

    • Had the same issue..rang them and after waiting for more than half an hour, the consultant explained that the first bill is charged fully as it is some kind of advanced bill, but she applied the $15 discount for Optus sport.
Also read the FAQs from the link provided by OP, it says the same that the discount will be applied from 2nd month.
As far as network is concerned, I moved from Vodafone, haven’t noticed any major difference in Adelaide CBD and west of adelaide; pretty much same if not worst.

  • So… I have ported out to Kogan from Optus and wanting to get back onto this plan… Optus still thinks I am with them and won't honour the price. I've been on Kogan for 1+ month…. What a useless bunch.

    • Are you on a plan or pre-paid with Kogan?
