Home Security System- Is This a Good Deal?

Got this as a flier
Home security system fully installed for $1300
Includes

. Hikvision 4 Channel PoE IP NVR
. 4 x 2MP Dome Cameras
. 1 TB Surveillance Hard Drive
. Connection to TV & Modem

Upgrade to 2TB HD - $ 80
Upgrade to 8Ch NVR - $ 150 (2TB HD INC)
Additional Cameras - $ 170

so getting the 8Ch version with a total of 4 cameras would cost $1790 installed for a single storey house

Is that a fair price?

(I do not have a DIY bone in my body, and am not tech savvy)

  • Looking at the price of Kikvision gear that meets that spec, the box and 4 cameras looks to be around $650 - $700 on eBay.
$600 - $650 to install including all that cat5 seems reasonable?

  • The HIK 8 channel DVR is $899 from SmartHome (http://www.smarthome.com.au/hikvision-8-channel-ip-nvr.html) and that's probably not the cheapest already.

A 1TB hard drive for surveillance is less than $100.

These are retail prices, so the company that's advertising this package would likely be getting those items cheaper.

You would need to find out what kind of dome cameras you're getting in the package to be able to work out whether the package is value for money. Cameras can range from about $20 each to thousands.

Once you work out approximately how much all the parts cost, you can work out how much the "installation" really is.

Then you can decide whether you want to buy the package with installation or if it's cheaper to buy all the parts yourself and getting an electrical contractor to come and install it for you for a total cheaper price.

    • Details of the camera

HiWatch IPC-T120-I is a 2MP IP network Dome turret camera with 2.8mm fixed wide angle lens and 30m IR range. Digital Wide Dynamic Range and 3D digital noise reduction are used in conjunction with the IR LEDs to provide images in total darkness up to 30m.
The HiWatch IPC-T120-I is IP67 rated and can be used for both indoor or outdoor applications.

The camera retails for around $88 on ebay, of course cheaper if you buy it as a package

So I'm assuming installation is around 500-600 as Charlie said

Is that reasonable (I have never had to use an electrician's services before) as a ball park figure?
      thanks

      • In that case, I don't think the deal is too bad if the installation is done properly.

The Hikvision system you're looking at seems to be quite common, so for your own peace of mind, call around to get some more price comparisons and read some reviews about the system. I've just been looking at the prices from other retails to see if the package price is okay - I haven't looked into the quality of the system itself.

Do you really need the 8-channel DVR with 2TB? Possible future expansion? Could save the $150 there. 1TB should be enough since it'll loop and record over itself anyway. Unless you want to store more footage to go back on later.

Make sure they install it properly so that the DVR is not easily accessible and the cabling to and from the cameras are all hidden (not just running up and down the wall).

  • This is perhaps a silly question, but why CCTV over a traditional alarm?

    • Not 100% sure so here is a silly answer

Alarm- will detect any intrusion when I am not home (unsure if I can use it when I am home as it has motion sensors, and I may set it off?)

CCTV- will record images (clarity depending on the camera) which I can show to police?
can use it when I am indoors

Using the combo if I am not at home, the alarm is set off, which hopefully acts as a deterrant to the fella
and if it does go off, the cameras would have recorded the intrusion, or hopefully record a decent pic

    • False alarms are so common nowadays that people barely pay attention to them anymore.

CCTVs provide images of what happened and, depending on how it's configured, lots have an inbuilt motion detection feature that can be used to trigger things such as alarms or recording.

If you come back to your home that was broken into during the day, it's not going to matter whether the alarm went off or not. But if you have a CCTV, you could at least check the footage and perhaps go "that's the kid down the street!"
