Refund Policy - The Good guys

Hi everyone,

Just wondering what's the good guys refund policy on kitchen appliances e.g. blender or slow cooker that's been used once (Mother in law doesn't like it)? Got told by a store today that there's no change of mind but the website doesn't say anything about that? They suggested I go back to the original store where the item was bought as the salesperson from the original store said I could take it back anytime if I was 'unhappy' with the purchase.

Item is basically new, doesn't look like it's even been used and was bought in July. What's the best way of getting the refund?

Thanks

Personally I think you have a bit of cheek to expect a refund for a used item simply because your mother-in-law "doesn't like it". Just what do you expect the retailer to do with a used, 2nd hand product? Moreover it was purchased some 3months ago.

  • +6

So 3 months later seeking a refund?..

  • +3

That's right, they won't provide a "change of mind" refund. How do you expect them to sell a used appliance if they took it back?

Some manufacturers have a "like it or your money back" deal, but its different for every brand.

And unless you have it in writing that the salesman said you can return it, it means squat.

They don't need to specifically state there's no refund for change of mind, its covered in basic Aus consumer law- that stores don't have to refund/exchange for change of mind.

    Once it's used, it's used.
It doesn't matter if it used 1 or 100 times and still brand new or is falling apart. 3 months is a long time. I would have my doubts of returning a sealed prouduct after 3 months - Aus consumer law only says 30 days.

    • where does it say 30 days?

      • I'm not sure exactly but I thought the phrasing was something like that. Don't ask me difficult questions early on a Monday morning lol

        • You misread/misunderstood the ACL regarding change of mind.

        • @Ughhh: Two negative posts against me - one gets negged and one gets collapsed. Maybe OzB is trying to tell you something?

        • @pennypincher98:

          Collapsed? Where?

Maybe OzB is trying to tell you something?

That you shouldn't be afraid to ask the store (they're not going to bite you), being educated in your rights and your entitlements can help you and …am I supposed to care or feel hurt by 2 tiny red signs?
If I can face talking to customer service, Im sure I can handle some red minus signs.

Do you usually find being corrected as a 'negative' comment? Would you rather people lie and tell you what you want to hear?

        • @Ughhh:
Was** collapsed. Obviously God/Mod's want me to look like a fool.

I'll ask the store lol. Specifically for you so you don't keep honking on about it. Happy?

Also, don't talk down to me I know my rights and entitlements perfectly fine. If something doesn't concern you, stay out of it. If you are going to post, at least do something useful. Also - where was the correction? Besides you being a Grammar Nazi? Don't worry, I'll wait.

I think it would be better if you make another thread, or ask in a different forum too.

I would have my doubts of returning a sealed prouduct after 3 months - Aus consumer law only says 30 days.

Are you still sure ACL allows consumers to return item within 30 days for change of mind?

If something doesn't concern you, stay out of it.

You're asking on a public forum.. and stated something that can mislead someone else. Im sure people who have worked in retail can recall the number of customers who were laughed at for being misinformed about their rights and acting all entitled.

          Also … https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/335664#comment-5176321

Also - where was the correction?

That you misread/misunderstood the ACL regarding change of mind.

I also don't recall commenting on your grammar?

          Take a chill pill.

        • @Ughhh: Actually, you did you bolded the "I think" when that is just the way I talk/type.

Yeah I might go in person I think

You said you will go to in person or suck it up as there is no other way. Obviously I know that. How is that helpful on any level?

I think it would be better if you make another thread, or ask in a different forum too

Obviously you don't know Ozbargain rules regarding duplicates then. A real shame that a three month old member knows that and a 7 year old member doesn't.

Lol exactly a public forum where everyone has the freedom of speech - if you didn't 'correct' people in such a condescending manner maybe people would like you and be inclined to take your advice. Saying "no that's wrong" isn't that helpful if you don't give the right answer.
Could you imagine if you were in school/work wherever and you were new to a job and the employee/teacher didn't tell you the right way to do things he only said that's wrong whenever you made a mistake?

You said you will go to in person or suck it up as there is no other way. Obviously I know that. How is that helpful on any level?

If you knew the answer, then what's the point of the thread? You trolling ?

Obviously you don't know Ozbargain rules regarding duplicates then. A real shame that a three month old member knows that and a 7 year old member doesn't.

ROFL I think your sarcasm radar is broken.

maybe people would like you and be inclined to take your advice. Saying "no that's wrong" isn't that helpful if you don't give the right answer.

What makes you think I care what a bunch of internet strangers think about me? I'm not here to make friends. Perhaps you care, but it's naive to think everyone cares the same way.

I didn't say you were "wrong", I said you've misread/misunderstood the ACL. I'm not your mother or teacher.

        • @Ughhh: Are you assuming I still care? That's rather cute.

        • @pennypincher98:

I didn't assumed you care about your life problems, no one here cares, just here for the entertainment. I just assumed you're…Special. Your arguments are just as cute as you are. You're obviously very young and wound up right now.

        • @Ughhh: lol I'm not wound up I got a refund easily, very quick in and out.

Also you really must have an easy life for a refund to be a "life problem", shows how naive you really are.

I agree I'm special, but not in the way that you seem to be imagining. Even if I was, there shouldn't be anything wrong with that and it shouldn't be brought up.

Agree you've lost and leave it at that. Good day.

        • @pennypincher98:

          Let's leave it there Ughhh & pennypincher98.

          Thanks

        • @pennypincher98:

Whoosh! Stop skipping school! Thanks for the entertainment. G'day!

What is the item? If it's a small appliance, cut your losses (and keep your MIL happy which is a high priority) and sell it on gumtree or eBay

  • +2

you should return your MIL to the factory claiming manufacturing fault and loss of common sense . They will give you a brand new one

    • +2

Manufacturer will claim it's an inbuilt feature.

      • Was it advertised at the time of purchase?

  • "no change of mind but the website doesn't say anything about that?"
The website doesn't state many things.

Item is basically new, doesn't look like it's even been used and was bought in July. What's the best way of getting the refund?
I think you should sell it on eBay as BRAND NEW, UNUSED in box and tell everybody the RRP is 4x what it actually is

  • +1

Sell it on gumtrree for half the price you paid for it.
Hit the mother in law up for the other half.
    Done

    • What a mother-in-law. Doesn't like her appliance gift but only tells you 3 months later and expects a refund.

  • The Good Guys != ALDI.
Even ALDI has a 60-day limit on change of mind returns.

Also, with regard to TGG, they will charge a 20% re-stocking fee for returns (even if the item is unused). So, choose carefully in the future.

    • OP has already reached 100 days… even Aldi wouldn't help in this case…

Also, I doubt these items were available at Aldi, so your point is as useless as saying he should have purchased them at Woolworths as they would replace and refund with their fresh AND free guarantee.

      • @hello

I think you missed my point entirely. I never suggested OP should have bought the item from ALDI. I was simply stating TGG's returns policy isn't as lax as ALDI's.

so your point is as useless

IMHO, this whole thread is useless. Who thinks to return an used item after 3 months?!?

Mother in law doesn't like it

Is it simply the above or:

    *is it significantly different from the sample or description;
*it doesn’t do what the business said it would, or what you asked for and can’t easily be fixed

The reason you've provided means it's up to the retailer to decide whether they want to give you a refund or not. The two possible reasons I've listed means that the law will be on your side.

Go get your mother in law something she actually likes. Doing that might mean you'll have less headaches for the rest of your life!

    • And here's the reason we pay too much for shit in Australia, with entitled opinions like the one above.

      • You're saying what you're saying now but if you're the one that's been sold a dud of something or something you've bought doesn't do what it's supposed to do, I have no doubt that you would not even think twice about seeking a refund based on those "entitlements".

If you think the prices in Australia are much higher because of these points, then you're sorely mistaken. Consumer Protection laws like those are not only in Australia.

        • OP states mother in law doesn't like it, not that it's broken or that it's not what they ordered

        • @original15:

That's why I'm asking - is it the simple fact that she doesn't like it?

Or could she not like it because it doesn't work properly? Depending on what OP's MIL is like, she may or may not know how it should work and she would not know what OP was told about the product at the point of sale.

There could be a number of reasons. Sometimes I buy stuff that doesn't work like it should and I can't be stuffed going to seek a refund (even though I know I can get one) because it isn't worth the effort. If anyone sees it lying around and asks me about it, I just tell them "it's shit".

  • When you took it back to the original store as suggested, did they help you at all?

  • +2

It took 3 months for your mother in law to tell you she doesnt like what you bought her? Was she like doing a youtube unboxing, review and re-review x days having used the item?

  • Clean it well, re-pack it and re-gift it to someone else (Xmas time soon!). Or sell it on Gumtree for half price and cut your losses, use the funds to go get another one and try again. But do ask your MIL what she didn't like about it so you know what to go for next.

  • +2

I purchased a car ten years ago and now after 200,000km I have decided that I don't like it any more. Do you think I could get a full refund on it.

    • +1

Maybe clean it well and re-gift it to someone for Xmas.

  • +1

How about returning your mother-in-law instead? Much less hassle and you get to choose another completely new model.

    • +1

How about returning your mother-in-law instead?

She's probably been used more than once though.

      • +1

Yeah but you see, she's new to someone else..

  • Tell your mother in law you wish you could exchange her too and if she doesn't like this gift to wait and see what shit you get her at xmas.

  • nah nah nah nah nah, nah nah nah
