Car Audio Problems after Dealership Visit

So a bit of a back story my vehicle was one of the many impacted by the Takata airbag inflator recall. I don't usually take my car to the dealership as I have my own mechanic.

The vehicle I drive is pretty stock standard other than an entertainment system I had installed professionally by a local shop when I first bought it (touch screen navigation unit, ipod connectivity, new speakers all round, amplifier and sub.)

I dropped it in to have it's airbag inflator replaced and upon picking my car back up in the afternoon and the unit had been reset (this is normal as they would have disconnected the battery). However when I got home and set it back up as I would usually do my steering wheel controls no longer worked for volume up down, skip track, mute etc. iPod connected will no longer play music and only my 2 rear speakers are working.

I'm not too savvy on this kind of thing however to me it seems obvious they have disconnected something and either connected it back incorrectly or not connected it back at all.

When I released on Friday afternoon they had already closed and scheduled a callback for today which I received and it goes back in on Monday. I am curious to know if they will be able to fix the problem as the equipment is obviously aftermarket however it all worked perfectly before I took it in for this warranty job.

Just wondering what others would do in my situation here? I'll see how it goes on Monday I know taking it back to the shop where I had it installed originally could have it fixed however that will incur a charge which I almost feel the dealership should own up to if they are not able to fix it but maybe I'm wrong.

Let me know what you would do! Thanks!

Just casually mention you're in the market for a new car. They'll sort you out!

    • Painful but probably true!

  • I think they forget to put back the steering control connector.

    • I think so too! But what about my front speakers and iPod connectivity?

  • Personally, I would tell them that the audio was working perfectly immediately before you left the vehicle in their care, but is not now, so would they like me to drop the car back to them for them to get it working again.
(The onus would be upon them to prove that the audio wasn't working when you originally dropped off the car).
Any negativity on their part, which I'm sure won't happen, would prompt me telling them that I will have the problem sorted out by a car audio technician and send them the bill, the recovery of which I will persue.

    • Thanks for your reply. Hopefully all goes smoothly when I take it back in!

  • Quick question to the OP, so what's working and what's not? And what is the setup of your gear?

Does the H/U power on? Do the amps have power?

Are those rear 2 speakers hooked up to an amp or are they factory?

    • Head units working. Amp is powered. All speakers powered by the amp!

      • I would say that the most likely problem is that some of the connections aren't in the back of the H/U properly. By the sounds of it, probably the iPod connectivity cable and the front speaker RCAs.

Simply remove the H/U and check them. If that is something you can do yourself, it would save time than mucking around getting the dealership to do it. If you can't, just talk to the dealership.

Just as a quick test though, at the amp, swap the front and rear speaker RCAs, if the front speakers now work than its likely just those front speaker RCAs at the back of the H/U. RCA cables aren't held in that well, just a simple slide on. I've put the H/U back in before on my car, only to find that other cables pushed it off, so I had to pull the H/U out again.

  • Similar thing happened to my car after passenger airbag replacement. Reverse camera wasn't working when I got back home. Called them and they told me to bring the car to have it fixed. Of course they fixed it. Cable was disconnected from the back of the radio

Radio and reverse camera are aftermarket and I put them myself.
