Moved to Forum: Original Link

Opera Australia is having a clear out of its ‘dead stock’ (we kid you not) and they’re flogging blood-splattered costumes, shiny suits of armour and battle-torn military coats for pocket money.

Head to their props warehouse in Alexandria on October 21-22 and take your pick from their period costumes, wigs and hats. There’ll be more than 2,000 items on sale, from regular jeans and colourful T-shirts to 1960s and ’80s style dresses, and even handcrafted costumes from productions like Othello.

Prices start at $2 and they say "everything must go". There’ll be no option to try before you buy, or any refunds given, but they do accept cash and plastic.

Opera Australia’s Costume Clearance Sale is from 10am-4pm on Oct 21-22. 66 Euston Rd, Alexandria 2015.

If you go please take pictures to share!

It is pretty good, if you don't might driving at least 2 hours to get there even if you only live 1km away from it.

    • +1

Same, I would have loved to check out this sale!
Who doesn't need a shiny suit of armour in their wardrobe.
I hope Ozbargainers who visit take photos of their hauls to share here.

You think the homeless want to wear armour and bloody costumes?

      • -6

It's really not that much armour and bloody costumes… There is plenty of variety for all tastes.

But this man in this photo is homeless but with nice clothes he looks like a older/rougher James Dean.

Who wouldn't want to wear a puffy shirt? Who wouldn't want to be a pirate?

"They don't have homes. They don't have jobs. What do they need the top of a muffin for?!"

    • +6

they could try them on at your place

    • +2

There are plenty of services that support them. Not sure if I want to see Sweeney Todd on the streets!

    • +3

We really don't need the indigent dressed as Valkyries ready to choose those who will die.

      • +1

        That's gold, Jerry! Gold!

  • Ooh, very cool. Wish I was around at the time, would be a lot of fun to poke about!

    Just in time for Halloween

    • or fancy dress Xmas parties

or job interviews if you're trying to stand out from the other candidates

        • +6

Think of it, dressed as Brutus and explaining to the interviewer that you are a dependable team player who is not afraid to get your hands dirty performing the job.

        • +2

@Jake Elwood: but Caesar couldn't depend on Brutus.

        • Or a suit of armour and sword if you want to frighten the interviewing panel into submission!

        • +1

@Mahogany Granger: and that was the irony I was going for.

Stuff there won’t be cheap, I went there to hire a costume once upon a time and it cost $85 for the weekend. The shit in the bargain bin wasn’t much cheaper.

    • This is all Oprahs old clothes she is getting rid of though, and she just wants to have them gone in the one day, so there will be lots of deals.

    • +3

Not recently you didn’t. OA haven’t hired costumes to individuals of the general public for about 12 years.

This stuff has been in storage for the better part of 10-20 years. It will be in bins, it will be cheap and there is a lot of it. Source: know the lass who has been sorting everything into categories for the sale. I know there is a 10 for $10 crate, for example.

      • So jealous! I want to go, but we're in Melbourne.

      • Might’ve been the ABC studios then, my bad. It was one of the larger non-party prop hire places that mainly focused on telly and movie productions

  • I'll buy all the male ballerinas jockstraps and cups thanks. No judgement.

    • +2

It's Opera Australia - not the Ballet. So if that's your thing, you might be disappointed :)

      • -1

        Damn, opera singers are gross.

        • -1

You’re in luck still, plenty of ballet dancers work on operas. Someone gotta keep it looking interesting while the fat lady sings.

  • Any attractive female opera singers going for a song??

FWIW - I went with my partner to a similar sale at Opera Queensland a few years ago.

It was fantastic - real bargains.

People who liked the styles on offer were fitting out their wardrobes with lots of period stuff at ridiculously low prices.

Not for me - but it was great fun!

  • Cash and credit card facilities will be available.

I'll have some cash, thanks Opera Aus!

Please share pictures of what you buy everyone, I'll be living through you :P

Also I have been a pirate for work. We also have house maids at work.

  • Okay time to get the madmax spiky jacket.

    Great timing for Halloween

    Who needs a hero?

  • Whoops wrong page.

  • Got there at 10am 150m queue, went to have breakfast instead, came back in an hour queue as 200m…

  • Just thought I'd drop my 2c on the event so anyone who's going tomorrow won't waste there time.

Arrived there at 9pm thinking I'd beat the heat and make sure I had first dibs on anything as it wasn't very clear just how big this sale was. Surprisingly line went around the corner - I'd say a good 250-300 people were ahead of us at this point. (10am probably had 300-400 people behind us)

10am doors open and line shuffled forward for as many people the venue would allow - say 25-30 people tops at a time.

At 12pm we had moved up slightly??? We were getting closer and closer to the door and you could see people walking back to their cars with 10-15 items. In fact someone was loading up a truck in the drive way at around 11am with literally baskets upon baskets of costumes. The reason the line wasn't moving forward is that there wasn't a method of moving people through the venue - people would get in there and some had spent upto 40-50 minutes - more. At this rate I didn't think our position in line was going to get in the door at the rate we were moving.

At 1pm I left my partner in line and went to the backdoor to talk to the clerks regarding if there was still going to be any stock. Didn't look like it, and they weren't holding anything out back to chuck on, what was out there was out there. I guarantee when 4pm hit 70% of the people would would have lined up did not get inside - and you would have needed to be queued from 11am at the latest.

I totally get from Opera's POV there main goal was to simply 'move stock on' and so they sell an unlimited amount of items but it really sucked for the rest of us. After the first hour staff should have got the hint that the line that was bending around the corner was not going to be served at all and a gesture from one person to walk down the line and say 'Hey Guys, there's a very good chance you will not be served today' would have been greatly appreciated.

Anyone who is thinking of going tomorrow. There's no stock, or whatever it is, is literally the sloppy seconds that every single person who went through there passed up.

Any organisations keen to put on a sale in future please take photos of the general stock your putting on the floor (even if it's just a photo of the floor) and have a method for moving on people.

E.g. Three items max per person once you've queued or let one group in, max time in picking items is 10 minutes and then they all must be at a register.

    Cheers

    • Oh wow that's crazy! If I were there I would have been there around 6am with camping chairs.

Did you make it in after 4hrs?

      • We were still a hour(s) wait after 4 hours so I decided to leave after going to the front confirming there was about nothing left.

The only thing I left with for the day is a real bad case of sunburn =P

  • I'd love to read a wig buying guide before making decisions.
