GeForce 1070 and 770 making my display crash!? :(

Hey guys,

I got a gigabyte geforce 1070 about maybe 10 months ago and it was working great until the last week. So basically what happens is that the display would crash, the GPU fan goes into high speed mode where it's very loud then I have to hold down the on/off button. When I restart my comp, everything is back to normal. Though the display crash would happen randomly, this one happened 5 minutes into startup, sometimes 20 minutes. Crashes randomly when; playing a game, surfing the web or even just checking emails. I cannot pin point what is triggering the display crash.

My rig;
Windows 10 pro 64 bit, latest updates installed
intel i5-3570
Z77x-D3H mobo
16gb DDR3 ram
Gigabyte g1 gaming 1070 GPU
725watt PSU

Troubleshooting steps;
1 Uninstalled drivers from DDU software, installed latest firmware which is 385.62 selecting 'clean install'. still crashes
2 Spoke to online chat with nVidia and they couldn't find any fault with my GPU based on the 'system information' NFO file uploaded to them, they also linked me to download the previous firmware 385.28, was the latest 385.62 (or something like that) and the rep assured me it was a driver problem. still crashes.
3 I transferred my GPU from PCI-E 16x slot to the 8x slot. still crashes
4 Changed from displayport cable to HDMI cable while both in 16x slot and 8x slot. still crashes
5 Ran 'video card stability test'. still crashes
6 nVidia rep said the card is faulty because if it crashes on the 'video card stability test', send it in under warranty.

I sent away my 1070 away for warranty, for 2 days I have been using my motherboards display no problems! So I was 150% sure, now, my 1070 is faulty since I never had a crash with my mobo display! YAY right!?

NOPE, So today, I purchased a GTX 770 used for 70.00, not bad, just for me to play games while I wait for my 1070 to be repaired or whatever. Installed the drivers and everything was sweet.

now….. MY DISPLAY CRASHED AGAIN! :( So now, it's not my 1070 that's faulty, something is causing my GTX graphics cards to crash… it's got to be one of the other components of my hardware that's making my display crash!?

I don't get it, so my motherboard display has no crashes in the last 2 days so I am assuming everything is fine.

The only conclusion I can think of is that my 750watt PSU is faulty or needs replacing? I had it for approx 3 years now.

Thanks!

What brand PSU? if it's yumcha and 3 years, probably fried.

      It's Coolmaster Extreme 2 725W

Check your fan on the CPU, check the heat.

Just ran some tests, CPU core 1,2 and 3 maxed at 35 degrees while CPU core maxed at 42 degrees. This is over a 3 minute period. I have no programs opened etc….. but overall been stable around the 30 degree range

  • Your MB (motherboard) integrated graphics and your additional card (GTX 770 or GTX 1070) are largely separated, only some circuitry controlling both is common. Thus stable MB integrated graphics does not prove that a part of motherboard controlling additional card is working properly.

What you described can be caused by many components, unfortunately you have to start replacing one by one to see which is faulty. I would be replacing one by one (with borrowed parts, so you do not have to waste money?): all fans (any seized or slow, noisy?, anything overheating?), RAM, motherboard, power supply. It is difficult to say which part is most likely to be faulty — while power supplies often start to be unreliable after a few years, Coolmaster Extreme has excellent track record. One thing to try (free): reload motherboard BIOS with the latest version. Not very likely to fix anything, but it is fun ;>

    • Damn, yeah I can't get spare parts for free. None of me mates are builders, they come to me for help.

Thanks, prob just suck it up and fork out the dosh for a new PSU then take it from there

    • Motherboard is on its way

Power supply.. esp since they all req axuillary power

  • Had a similar issue before, can confirm 100% driver issue.

If you can, give it a fresh install of windows and try running W7/8 and see whether it still happens.

Also similar in how the issue started happening where it was just random.

    • I'm going to reinstall previous drivers see how that goes :S

    • try a different series of driver not 385.XX
    • Do you use MSI afterburner or EVGA PrecisionX? (dont have any OC setting you forgot about?)
    • Fresh install of windows?
    • Update Bios?
    • swap the ram into the other channel for the heck of it
    • offer a blood sacrifice
    • PSU is possibly borked
    • Super unlucky and the 770 is also a dud?
      • Ok im trying 382.XX version, not 385
      • Nah
      • Man, that's gonna be lengthy, I'll do it once I have a free day
      • Yup done that from previous post
      • Ill try it now
      • Blood type?
      • PSU My #1 assumption
      • Hahhahaha please god no…
  • Hi Hasher, not sure if this is the same issue but my display would crash as well at random times but most of the time it doesn't need a restart, my screen will just say no video input, I just have to re-plug the display cable and it would work, 90% of the time. It turns out to be a monitor issue (samsung 3D LED) because when I upgraded to a 1070 from a 590 I would get the same problem. I have not tested with the montherboard display because I wanted to play games so I can't confirm if it's a GTX issue.

    • Thanks for the reply, I just tested it with my previous monitor had lying around and its not a monitor problem :( I didnt think it would be the monitor but i can rule that one out :( still crashes with my other monitor

    Hey guys,

    Thanks for all your help.

It was the PSU/power supply. I changed it and been testing my GPU for approx 2 days and NO CRASHES!!! Happy Days!

Hopefully if anyone has this problem, possibly their PSU is dying!
