  It's a stretch to be both free and ad-free. This is free but has ads, licence removes ads and is generally well regarded. Get Google Rewards for free $$$ to spend on the Play Store!

  I haven't tried these, but permissions say no internet is required, and Google Play indicates no ads:

  It's hard to find good free apps that can't spy on you. I prefer mine to have:
  - no ads
  - no internet access
  - no ability to turn on BlueTooth/WiFi/NFC
  
  Once you have found a good app, back it up to an APK with a program like this:

  That way you can install the same version on your next phone. Often apps that are "good" now add "features" like "contains ads" in later versions.
