  • FYI to all. Apparently there is a newer version with subtle differences as described here in this review:

Biggest change was moving the laptop compartment from the front of the pack to flush against the back. This is a big change IMO - when the pack is full there is pressure to curve the laptop if it's at the front of the pack.

But this deal seems too good to give up!

  • I'm in the market for a light travel day pack that can go on as cabin carry-on, is this a good brand? Does anyone know how does this compares to others the like of Kathmandu or Macpac? Thanks

    • +1

I love mine! had no problem as hand luggage and a lot of stuff can go in with packing cells!

I have a osprey farpoint 40l and a katmandu litehaul 38l. The osprey is very durable and has a lifetime guarantee. The katmandu is more stylish and has cool pockets of ipads etc but the material is susceptible to wear and tear and I doubt it will last more than 5 o/s trips.

Recently when through my usual 40 hours of research whenever I need to buy anything on the topic of backpacks for travelling.

From what I understand this backpack is about the largest backpack that will safely be allowed for carry on.

I ended up going with the Farpoint 55L (40L + 15L), but might have a bit of trouble getting in as check in.

      • +1

I think you mean carry-on not check in:)

Unfortunately the main pack doesn't have the same dimensions as the Farpoint 40. From memory this has a height of around 64cm (compared to the FP40's 53cm) where the max for budget airlines like Jetstar is 56cm.
You may get lucky, but they seem to be getting stricter and stricter these days.

      • Thanks guys for your insightful experience - much appreciated.

I have been using a Monsac (Kipling knock off) crushed nylon backpack for my OS travel for years - it's a handy backpack as it's light; I can roll it up and store in suitcase; it's big but within carry-on restrictions; and being crushed nylon, I can store a day's worth of wife's souvenir shopping (as it doesn't have any compartments which is great - less weight and more room). The only issues are that the shoulder straps are in their last leg and stitching are starting to come apart, plus there's no back support.

I'll definitely look into this, albeit not sure if I need all those compartments. Lifetime warranty and good straps are pluses though.

On my travels to Asia and Europe I've seen so many Ospreys. They really trump in the functionality dept, well thought through. Not Kathmandus etc. Spec for spec Ospreys are great value, and last forever. But when they do need work (in my case) I have had a pack repaired and came out better than stock, and also a pack replaced, all under their lifetime warranty. No hassles and great customer service.

      • +1

I'm curious to hear about your warranty experience…did you buy yours in Australia, and was it repaired in Australia?
The reason I ask is because I recently got an Osprey Farpoint 40 and was disappointed to see that it was only covered by a 2 year warranty by the Australian distributor (there was a retail tag attached stating such in clear lettering). One of the reasons I went with Osprey was for their famous lifetime warranty.
Upon closer inspection of their "ALMIGHTY guarantee" it does state that it's only technically valid in the US…. Osprey backpacks sold / bought internationally have different warranty periods.

I wonder if they still honour lifetime warranties outside of the US as goodwill and to protect their reputation.

        • Good point, I don't think I noticed the dud AU warranty. I suppose that's more incentive to buy from a US retailer (and probably not at all what they intended). Otherwise, turnaround time was fantastic in AU. Highly recommended.

I have two Osprey packs - one for everyday usage and a hydration pack for mountain biking. I find them to be well constructed, with good ergonomics and design details. I can't comment on this particular model or how they compare to other brands.

    • Thanks to all (and many positive reviews on Amazon), I ended up buying a Farpoint 40 (instead of the Porter 46), as it appears more compact, has a better shoulder strap system, and has 2x water bottle pockets. Bought it from the same ebay seller for $144 (from $169), a bit more expensive than Porter but the features suit more towards my needs :)

Bought the green one in one of the last deals. Have used it for some interstate trips and for overnight camping where I had to bring all my own gear and supplies. Has held up great, really high quality. Only downside is there are no straps to tie down sleeping bags and mats to the bag directly.

  • Very good quality bag

  • Really good bag as a carry on, roomy. But I don't think it is good for or a day pack. I bought it years ago when it was under a hundred

  • Great bag, travelled around South America with one for 6 months no problems.

  • I'm looking for something closer to a 30 - 35 L. but seems like a good bag with one flaw i can see - the laptop pocket being at the front.

  • +1

Would this bag be good for day hiking trips?

    • +3

Nope get something suited to that in the Osprey range.
IMO This bag is too big and padding not sufficient for hiking day trips will dig into your arms.

      • Agreed, you won't need a bag this big for day hikes. If you're doing multiday hikes/trails, you would probably want something more comfy. Osprey is a great company though, highly recommend their bags

  • Great bag

  • Great bag. Pretty much my go-to for all of my work trips up to one week in duration. Build quality is solid and the fact that you can tuck in all of the straps and stow easily into overhead compartments is a bonus. Never been called out on the size of it and it's actually much roomier than you expect.

  • I have the 30L version of this, which isn't much smaller dimension-wise. I've been pretty happy with it, its a great carry-on bag and durable enough for the occasional checking in. Love the suitcase style opening and the sturdy sides.

I would note though, this is meant to be a travel duffel bag that you can also use a backpack. Its not super comfortable if heavily loaded and walking for a long time imo (not as much padding for your back for example), and I imagine more so with the bigger 46L.

  • I have one. Its an excellent carry on bag.

  • Great bag, great brand. I've got 3 Osprey bags now and can't fault them. Have served me very well over the past decade or so.

  • +2

I rate Osprey and have a tried a few different ones in my travels.

This model that is on sale is the older model and the newer ones has quite a few imporvements not just changes so I even for the $ saving I would'nt recommend going for this older one when you can get the new. It's one of the most important things in your travel so do it right.

I am in the market for a new backpack myself. I currently have the farpoint 40 and was re-assessing my options. I would recommend the farpoint as the better 'backpack' it has far better support to that of the porter. The new compartments of the porter though are really enticing; The laptop sleeve at the back and separate pocket on the top would be really convenient. But it keeps coming back to the fact that real support would be more important for me. If I was just wanting a good piece of luggage in backpack form I would go the porter.

I would also probably go the 30 over the 46. 46 getting on the bigger side and the 30 will force you to pack lighter.

The ozone series also intrigues me but it seems to have too much depth. Like porter though it has some neat pockets and the water bottle pockets on the side is a game changer compared to the farpoint.

  • Think this would be a good bag for 2 weeks in japan? Enough space for clothes and stuff?
    NVM, all out of stock.

    • I used the Osprey Farpoint 40 in New Zealand for about 2 and a half weeks and it was enough for me. I travelled to South Island just start of september and it was cold/snowing and i was still able to fit all my clothes. The only thing was I couldn't take extra shoes. If i went during summer I reckon I could have

    • Backpack is a good idea because of the lack of escalators and lifts at many train stations. But you won't be able to buy much . Maybe get a rolling suitcase and send it via courier between destinations.

      • My reasoning is that I've got the 20kg plane limit so if I take a bag like this on carry on, I can decide to buy another cheap case to put on the plane back to AUS if I end up with more stuff from the trip.

        • Good thinking. I'd probably look at at least 50L to be comfortable

  • Bought this a month ago for $135, wish I had waited :(

  • Osprey is about as best brand of backpack you can get, a lot of people complimented me on my bad through my years of travel.
Mine laster 10 years and I only did a clim on it because i broke a buckle. they replaced the bag with a whole new one.

As much as I would have loved to keep the new one, they had just made too many changes, so I sold it on.
Amazing brand, Hopefully they produce the same quality as they did 10 years ago..

  • Great bag.

Too large for my needs, but good for those starting out travelling.

  • You can still get it here for $10 more if anyone is keen on the bag.

  • the 65L not much more in price but I went for the 30L because the mobility and reviews on youtube saying good for 2 weeks city walk.

Show how many t-shirts can fit in different size of the Porters

  • can this hold a boosted board?

    • I'd say maybe? If you sling it through the two clip bands on the front and have the wheels held on the top strap.
