PayPal Request for Personal Information

Recently received a notification from email about unusual activity after entered two bank accounts. Not sure how on earth got the unusual activity regard this but only trigger could think of is I added this same bank twice by a better identify name on the account.

Anyway, the paypal account is opened for more than 3 years and been doing simple transactions smoothly for a while now. They first ask me for the bank statements. So I provided a screen shot of the accounts with my name from internet banking. About a day later I got an email about this below

I was surprise how many personal information paypal asked for me on this, I would thought the worst case I have to provide a prove of the paypal transaction with my name and that is. Now they asking for address, passport and month bank statement I am not sure this is over the line for privacy. Just not sure how to deal with this or should I just give up using this paypal account to open a new one with different email.

This paypal account currently have two credit cards with my name and two of this above bank accounts and zero balance.

Please suggest what is paypal next step if you experience similar with this. should I submit all personal information paypal asked for? Thanks heaps

  • I had a similiar situation to this, I believe they are updating their privacy/policy act and because of this, require more info than normal.

If in any doubt, maybe speak to paypal over the phone and get them to confirm the email they sent across and question the questions/limitations you are having.

can confirm this is true as my paypal account is limited use now according to this. My problem is should I provide that much information to them. Im not sure is safe as this way over the line ask for personal information, isn't paypal just an international payment facility not even an australian bank

      • That's a question you need to bring to Paypal. I'm sure it isn't a major issue, after all, your bank accounts are associated/connected to paypal, so I don't really see the harm in it. They're probably just trying to protect your account further with updated t&c's

      • As other have said they have been doing this for years. It can also be triggered if you make a large enough sale where they withhold the $, till you provide them the required info.

It's quite simple; If you disagree or don't want to provide the info for whatever reason, then you're free to discontinue using their services.

        • ok. the fact that they still contain my banks and credit cards detail which I want to delete but it is not possible to do so until I gave them their request information. happy to close the paypal account but need to remove those information before,.. so…

      • Global data matching would be my guess?

This is normal behaviour for PayPal, and they have been doing it for years. They are a regulated financial company, and if you read the t's & c's, you'll probably find this in there.

However I take issue with them not requiring this up front. They draw you in with their loose requirements, then once there is some issue, it's all 'hand over the details now'. Personally i don't trust them enough with any ID or other documents, which is why I politely told them to go f*$# themselves. I would not recommend giving PayPal any additional documentation, but it's really your call. Some people really do not think it's an issue. They might be regulated, but it's still and American company. Personal choice.

In the end, I had to lodge an ombudsman complaint to get PayPal to unfreeze the account so I could delete it, and give me my money back. It is because of this you may now find all eBay 20% sales are bullshit for a new reason - PayPal account required, which imo should be on the deal title.

Best of luck sorting out your issue.

    • isn't ombudsman only deal with financial institution that only in australia??? all I want is remove my card and bank details now. you reckon will able to open up another paypal account with different email again?

        Section 19.

PayPal in Australia is an Australian company regulated by Australian ombudsman.

You can try opening new account. But if the name is the same, and you try to link same cards, same bank, they will likely flag you again, and you're back to square one.

I recommend getting out, and staying out. Nobody needs PayPal.

  • Damned if you do (identity fraud risk), damned if you don't (can't use PayPal). Obviously, most people opt for the former, because the impact of not being able to use PayPal is more immediate and obvious, but if more people behaved as bumblebeetuna described above, we'd probably end up with better ID procedures instead of being presented with this dilemma.

  • Just be careful of emails supposedly from Paypal, I always block & delete. And my Paypal account is going fine!! If in doubt, then just go to your paypal account direct.

    • I received heaps of fake emails from paypal too. but this limited case indeed is real one. What do you mean by 'just go to your paypal account direct?'

      • Instead of clicking on any emailed links, go to Paypal and login.
