I think you are wasting your money spending $1000 on a watch. Realistically, most watches in that price range will be overpriced quartz pieces, where you are paying for a brand name and actually getting a $30 watch. (I'm sure there are a few exceptions, but this is largely the case). It's not until you step up a few extra grand that you get a mechanical watch, and something that has and retains actual value. If I was buying a watch in your price range, I would look at spending about half that on an Apple watch, or 1/10th of that on a plain quartz watch (some kind of swatch, or something along those lines).

It's kind of like those guys who buy 316i BMWs to get a 'luxury car'. They would be better off spending a little more money and getting a 330i, which is kind of the entry level 'proper BMW' (I know it doesn't have an I6, but it does have the performance you'd expect and a decent interior and features). Otherwise you'd be better off getting a VW Passat for less money; more luxurious and many more features.

    • Thank for your input. My dad doesn't like/know how to use technology. But still Would prefer android watch if he want one

Could you stretch to something as gorgeous and classic as this?

and no….it's nothing to do with me - just a really nice, quality watch

    • Agree. Look good that one.

      • A refirbed birth year omega would be amazing thing to own and one day hand down. worth every cent but the older ones are often small at 36mm but they are beautiful.

    • Good find. That’s what I’d buy. It might be second hand, but it’s actually worth what you pay for, and it will probably appreciate.

    Must it be an Automatic?

How 'bout this one? It comes with an unwritten 'will get you laid' guarantee.

Oh yeah, chicks really dig pocket watches. Especially if you pick them up on a Penny Fathing.

Honestly, would you be able to resist the charms of a gentleman who was thus attired?

      • I instruct my footmen to fetch a mopsy to my sedan chair and then we set off for Castle PJC. Next morning, three shillings is ample recompense; sometimes an extra sixpence if I feel generous.

    • This is look good. Is Louis erade good brand ?

      • there are a heap of swiss watches around - not all are great and just trading on the Swiss Watch name i think.. These are from a company started in 1931 that came back to life in the 2000s when private investors bought it out , so its not the same old watch company and seems to be run by Swatch watch group (translated from wikipedia so no sure as its french)

        • Yes, the traditional companies suffered with the arrival of quartz, even Oris used quartz in some watches for about 2 years. The Swatch business model was very successful and they now own some fine brands. Swatch Group do not own louis Erard, but provide movements to them.

En 2012, le fabricant fait un virage vers les montres à quartz à la suite de l'annonce par le Swatch Group, son fournisseur de mouvements, de réduire les livraisons.

In 2012, the manufacturer is turning to quartz watches following the announcement by the Swatch Group, its provider of movements, to reduce deliveries.

      • Louis Erard is definitely a premium brand. http://montres-louiserard.ch/en

  • Why not a much much cheaper rugged high quality watch. I have had a G shock for 5 years that I wear daily. Similarly there are some very nice brands out there,Victorinix, Luminox, Casio, Citizen dive range. I just feel like for $1k you can't get a decent luxury watch, but under $1k you can get a very decent rugged everyday watch.

Watches are a personal choice. Fact is you could spend 1000 dollars, he might hate you, and probably prefer other kids to you. Think about it. Box of favourites is probably safer choice.

You will not regret investment on Steinhart

    https://www.steinhartwatches.de/

German brand with swiss made watches. Excellent quality watch.

Most watches are between AU$600 to 1200.

    I have https://www.steinhartwatches.de/de/premium-line/ocean-titani… - its really nice.

    • yeah, the ocen1 is one of my fav

asianbargain ~ Im a serious watch guy and I think i can help guide you if you follow my logic

Birth year automatics thats have been refirbished (face, hands and movement) are amazing things to own and ware. Omega would be my pick BUT

    A lot cheaper is quarts
Changing batteries suck, so look for solar (citizen calls it ECO DRIVE but its same thing) in either Citizen or Seiko
If you hate fixing dates on watches look for PERPETUAL CALENDER
If he is a big fisherman, boatie or swimmer look for a CASIO SOLAR with TIDES
& If he golfs, avoid automatics as they hate the gold swing movment!
    Gold always look nice…
As you get older, watches with bigger faces make reading the time easier too.
Smart watches are a waste of money as the technology is good for maybe 2 years, the battery for not much more.

SOMETHING LIKE THIS MAYBE ~ https://goo.gl/8Cp7Zr

    • Thank for useful infor. What you said is exactly what im after. Bigger face plain simple and something last long time. Dont want waste time on changing battery.
Your link is look good for me but i think too complicates looking for my dad

      • https://www.longislandwatch.com/Seiko_SARB065_Watch_p/sarb06… this watch is gorgeous irl.

Also the Steinharts mentioned earlier are definitely worth a look.

      • You set it once with the manual (any watch shop will do it for you) and its done for a VERY long time.

Has awsome LUME (hands are bright) for night viewing. Stopwatch resets after 12 hours of use if left runnung too

        I have 2, I love them

  • i think you're better off asking exactly what brand style he wants

eg. my dad has upper end brands like rolex omega autos so there's no point buying him anything

however he himself uses either Tissot or that kind of low end swiss quartz for day to day

an everyday brand name like a Tissot is a no brainer… any lesser name is… quesitonable
