Recommend Me A Pedestal Fan

Hi guys,

Looking to buy 2 pedestal fans before summer starts, main criteria is low noise ( as low as possible) and under 100$ each if possible. Would have loved to get a Dyson Blade less but its so $$$$$

The Dyson is loud and weak, I have one of these. Slightly over your budget but it's a great fan!

Comes with remote and is really easy to clean.

Seville slim tower fan is quite good. I've heard it's available at Costco too.
Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/152686729532

  • find a cheap one with the biggest blades from Bunning, Target, Big W etc. 40-50cm. Then you can have it on a slower speed. Get one with a timer, handy at night.

    • Nope.
Don't get the 40cm ones. They're small, and usually underpowered. And if they're fast, they will be quite "whiny" loud.

Go for a large fan. I think the standard size is 75cm.
These can push a lot more air, and the zone that they push is also much larger, so it makes a much larger impact to people using the room.
And if you find yourself not needing the "high performance", then you can simply dial the speed down… and now it should be slightly more efficient than the smaller fans but much much quieter. The way to think about these larger fans is that they can almost replace a ceiling fan… the smaller ones definitely cannot substitute for a ceiling fan, let alone an AirCon.

The 75cm units start around $40 and go all the way up to $200.
The "pedestal" function is quite useful, as well as the built-in timers. I personally don't like remotes, but some do 'ave em.
This summer is shaping up to be one of the hottest ones on record, again.

  • I've recently trying to find a good fan and came about Vornado. Never tried it but seems good.

May be someone used a Vornado before can let us know if it's a good fan?

We have a vornado in one of the bedrooms. It is a midrange model and works very well but takes atleast 15 minutes to get a pleasant breeze going. You have to angle it in a particular direction so the air bounces off the walls. Took a while to get the hang of it. We use it on the low setting as the high setting is too loud.

      • I realise this is all somewhat subjective, but how loud is the low setting, and how far is the fan from where you sleep?

Low sounds less noisy than the regular fans from bigw. It doesnt really matter how far the fan is placed from the bed as the air circulates very well in the room with it directed towards the wall.

  • Serious question but what is the usual range of power usage for small and large pedestal fans?

Might think of getting one for the upcoming summer time if it is not too expensive on the electricity bills to help with indoor bedroom air circulation.

About 50W for the cheap Target / everywhere else ones. Run them 24 hours a day and it would probably cost you less than 50 cents.

Get the Tower Fan (or similar) from Costco. Its slim so it doesn't get in the way, it has a remote, a timer and it comes with a little mini-me!

I bought mine for $80 bucks and after 3 years its still going strong.

    • Do we know how much it cost atm. Not a Costco member so have to ask a friend.btw how is noise coming out of it ?

Last time I looked it was $100. It has 3 speeds so fairly quiet in my opinion. The good thing about Costco is that if you're not happy with it, you can just return it no questions asked.

That's the Seville brand. Very happy with it.
