Considering Getting The GPD Pocket. Invites Experiences from Owners/Users

From what I read, I find the GPD pocket a fascinating machine with it's full Windows experience, quality construction and the delightfully small foam factor.

  • Those who have used it, How was the experience so far?
  • Everyone, would you consider buying one?

All comments appreciated.

  • There is a pretty decent review here

I'd consider it if I had cash to spare, but to me tight / cramped keyboards + lack of multi-touch gesture trackpad means very limited productivity.

So it's something I'd buy for the sheer novelty of having a pintsized PC but would struggle to find a use for it in everyday situations.

Also for an extra $150 dollars you could buy the Xiaomi Mi Air 12" and for $150 less you could buy a Dell Inspiron 11 3000, although it would have a crappy 720p display.

  • Nothing special about it apart from being small.

  • You can get better for a similar price.

  • I've never used the GPD pocket, but I've had experience with UMPCs. A long time ago I used to own a Fujitsu U1010 which is around the same size and form factor as the GPD. A year ago I also had an 8 inch Vivotab Note 8.

Personally I don't think I'd buy another windows device that has a screen size <11 inches. Having a really small PC everywhere is really cool but once you get past the novelty it's a bit gimmicky and you want a real sized machine to do your real work.

That being said, if you have a particularly niche use case (e.g. emulation of old games, a pocket movie player, getting stuff on and off USBs or remote desktoping or whatever), then something like the GPD Pocket may be worthwhile.

  • if gpd put 4g sim slot + camera + dual boot on this thing, the phone market will shit itself.

  • It's a great gadget but well overpriced for my liking especially with many much cheaper alternatives and options also the keyboard functionality is not what I am really looking for otherwise I would just get a mini laptop with a 1080p screen or higher and do game streaming on that.

I have been looking at other alternative options for mobile gaming like buying a cheap Linx Vision 8" tablet or this similar windows handheld like device tablet but with an add-on controller type pad on the sides and doing game streaming from a more powerful desktop or laptop.

Ultimately if I could live with the setbacks in pure raw gaming performance I would do it but like scrimshaw said only if I had extra cash lying around.. maybe when it reaches sub $150 AUD I would give it a go but it is honestly too inflated atm btw what's it's current price now in AUD?

    • ATM Geekbuying sells it at $630
Will it ever get to even sub $300? I don't know…

Will be keeping an eye out for alternatives, but frankly nothing else is out there in this performance and build league.

      Suggestions would be welcome.

Gaming is not my primary objective.
Just everyday light computing… browsing, a bit of office stuff etc…

And, importantly, many hours of use in between charges.

      • Personally a tablet in the $300-400 would be better for me.

If I were to do any office stuff then a mini laptop in the 11-14" range would probably be better for me.

Atm my Huawei Mediapad M3 8.4" Tablet is doing ok but there are times I wish I had a proper keyboard to type these comments but Swype has come a long way and its good enough for me although it could be a little bit better.

Maybe one of those N300's or ideapads that go for around $300 AUD on sale usually if you are after office productivity and browsing.

Heck if it was just general browsing a barebones chromebook would do it.

I guess this GPD pocket could be a nice little personal productivity laptop I dunno though I would have to see it still in person for myself.

The novelty for $620 isn't too bad honestly especially for still new gear I just know for my personal use case I can do better or have slightly better options in the tablet range but it is tempting at times.

If it drops to around $400 I "might" consider it as then it starts to enter alternative decent Windows tablet range.

If it goes below $300 then it would make my decision and life much easier but at $620 halfway to a very decent 1050ti laptop that has so much more use cases and overall power no deal the unique build design is just too costly.

I am a trained and long time bargain hunter so for some this might look like a good deal (because it is) but for those of us that know this tech space a little better and maybe too much better haha lol it's still in the overpriced tech category for me.

I mean you can build a nice pc for that same amount of money easily or an Xbox One S bundle and small 4k tv.. that's how costly it is.

To put it in perspective it's the same price as a Samsung galaxy tab s3 which is still grossly overpriced atm unless you want the very best.

The GDP guys are definitely making a pretty profit on this niche area and its easy to see why.

  • I have one and don't use it much beyond the novelty as it's a bit cramped/slow compared to my gaming laptop (duh). The GPD Pocket is good when travelling if you need a full PC for emergencies/accessing things and the form factor is nice for videos on the plane - but a tablet can achieve most of this too.
