Connecting a Second NBN FTTN Internet Only Line to a House/Residence, Costs, Paperwork, etc?

Considering connecting a second internet line to my current place.

I have one NBN FTTN already installed.

Any ideas of the process, costs or even if this is possible.

In NSW if that matters.

For those curious or asking I have a 12/1 broadband and phone plan bundle with ACN Pacific already but my roommates don't want to change it because for some reason ACN can't change the speed of the plan without it affecting international unlimited calls (don't ask) so I am forced to find other options to further increase my speed. Have thought about large mobile data plans on 4g etc but even then it might not be more than enough than say a 100/40 unlimited home broadband plan anyways I need something more for my future use especially when the house and network gets congested.. Funny and weird story and situation I know but here we are.

They are fine with me getting a second line of internet as long as I pay all the bills so here I am doing some research and trying to find out first how much it costs or if I can even do it (or in that reverse order rather).

Curious on information on getting a second internet line and possibly a second home phone line or both if they are not mutually exclusive.

Thanks again Ozbargain your information and vast knowledge is always the best I feel like I should devote a portion of my room space to a shrine of eneloops and pictures of bikies now with how much I use and love this site.

Have a great long weekend all. Enjoy it.

This sounds crazy, and kind of selfish on your roommates part. I've never heard of ACN but a bit of googling shows they have pretty expensive prices but what seems to be a decent (although standard, in the day of whatsapp, skype and all over means of international calling).

Option 1. tell your roommates to suck it up, ditch ACN entirely and change to a different provider and get decent speed (hostile version; but probably smartest - you shouldn't be paying for their international calls)

Option 2. it looks like there is an ACN plan that includes unlimited data, a turbo speed boost (50/20 - it states it doesn't provide 100/40) and unlimited calling to 90+ countries). This is $99.95 + $10 for the speed boost.
    - i think your roommates are misinformed re: the options ACN provide.
** given FTTN is a piece of shit, 50/20 may be max attainable speed depending on distance from copper **

Option 3. Move to FTTP area and bask in glory that is full fibre

    Option 4. Bikies

Option 2 is clearly the best choice, and will be vastly cheaper then getting a new line (even if they let you do that, your looking at a few hundred $$$ just for the connection, then paying full fee yourself + new router etc).

Good luck AlienC, live long and prosper

Thanks esosite great options there hmm might try some of them lol. Esosite you da man or woman but I am gonna go and guess man yeah!

  • This wil be interesting,
Your lead in cable has 2 pairs so you should be able to get another service in.
You'd probably get charged a new connection fee of $299 etc.
Will they cut your current Channel pair off and change the login…? that is the main question hahahahahahahaa

    Goodluck.
FYI i do FTTN installs for work.

    • Any ideas on who I would have to contact or call? The ISP itself or NBN co or otherwise etc? And what necessary paperwork, forms or verification etc.

      • You would also have to specifically tell them to book an appointment for a technician to come out as they'll likely use your current line. If a tech come, you have to tell them to connect the second pair. Most houses the second pair only runs to the first pit, so if it's a lot of work they'll likely just reject doing it. Then you need another socket for the line

        • So I contact the ISP?

      • Choose your ISP, sign up with them preferably via phone and speak to someone and explain etc.
And then when a tech comes out tell them its a second line.
They'll need access to the first socket or the socket that the lead in cable is connected to, connect the second line to a new outlet and then off you go.

You aren't the only residential i have been to where they have 2 NBN service FTTN to the premises, but i don't see many cause most people are happy with just the one.

        • So I should do this through the ISP and not a special number through nbn co?

        • @AlienC:

NBN will not speak to you directly.

        • @the hammer88: ah ok, so ISP it is then. Cheers thanks.

  • Can you detect a Telstra AIR signal on WiFi?

    • Yes.

      • Get a Telstra prepaid service that give Telstra AIR access for FREE and use that to buy some time.

        • is using Telstra air the most cost efficient large mobile data option?

  • Considering you said in another post you only use an Android tablet I'd say a 50gb Optus wireless service or the likes may be sufficient… No? Seems way too painful to get a second line in, especially for somewhere you'll be temporarily (presumably).

PS. Your roommates sound rubbish… I'd stop paying for the internet if I could not use it fully
