What Oil to Use for Wooden Chopping Boards?

Hey guys,

So im wondering what ozbargainers use to oil their chopping boards?
My previous chopping board started chipping and looks like started to blacken in the cracks, so thats when i figured I'm supposed to oil it, but im not sure what "mineral" oil to use.

    Linseed oil (food grade).

    EVOO

  • Linseed.

  • Use Tung oil, as this oil will not go "off" rancid, you can buy from Bunnings, however 1lt is $47.20

  • Go to the chemist and ask for liquid paraffin.

  • If you google this topic, you will find many references to mineral oil on US websites.

In Australia, food grade mineral oil is sold as liquid paraffin. You can get it from many chemists (because it's traditionally used as a laxative).

It's important to clean the chopping boards as soon as you are done with them. Not a good idea to leave meat juices, or other stuff that can spoil, sitting on the wood for hours on end.

Let the board dry, give it a quick wipe down with sunflower oil on a paper towel and let sit overnight. Rinse off with a bit of warm water, no detergent, wipe with a clean sponge and let dry. Repeat about once a month.

Been doing that to the same set of chopping boards for about 10 years and they're still as good as new and have no stench.

Don't bother with any "special" oils. Stick to stuff you would cook with.

    • Yup, canola oil for mine. Successfully used for decades.

  • I researched this question for myself about 18 months ago, a lot of oils go rancid, I went to a woodworking forum, and while you can buy special oils for chopping boards, they also recommended " grapeseed oil" which you can buy at supermarket.
I use this and have had no problems with nasty smells etc
