Which monitor for my RX 570

Hi everyone,

so I bit the bullet on the Dell deal during the 20% off eBay sale and now I'm looking for a monitor. Light gamer, I do colour work so I need colour accuracy. So far, I've found two possible pick ups which are down below.

Philips 278E8QJAB - FHD curved sRGB w/ Freesync $300 27 inches
LG 25UM58-P - 2560 x 1080 sRGB w/o Freesync $230 25 inches

I'm almost 100% set on the Philips. But I'm also wondering how much of a difference does Freesync make and can a RX 570 run the LG monitor if I also have a second FHD monitor as well? I'm certain the RX 570 can do 2 FHD monitors and I'll have a silky smooth gaming experience, but if what if I choose the LG?

Cheers,
BrewerHaHa

  • I just went from 144hz non G-Sync to 144hz G-Sync and the difference is very noticeable, at 60hz Freesync will be even more worth it.

    • My choice is almost set on the Philips but also extra screen res is very tempting. Do you think you could go back to no G-Sync?

      • If there was some great feature to swap for it, I suppose I could go back to no G-Sync whereas there is just no conceivable way I could go back to 60hz. Ultimately G-Sync/Freesync are luxuries but very nice ones to have.

        • Can you give an example of a great feature? Or is that just a hypothetical?
I'm torn, maybe I should go for an even higher refresh rate monitor, but I'm really stretching my budget as is and getting 99% sRGB is already expensive as is

  • Keep in mind the LG is very small. Because it's ultrawide, the height is equivalent to an ~20" 16:9 monitor. Really need to see it in person to get an idea of what I'm talking about - the 29" is the comfortable minimum size IMO.

The RX 570 will have no troubles running the LG alongside a FHD display.

    • What about my frame rates? I know the RX 570 will get me good frame rates is almost everything at 1080p and high settings, but what about the LG? That's a lot more pixels

      • Will obviously observe a drop. I'd go for the Philips for gaming -> freesync and the extra size will be more beneficial.

Could also be worth checking out the Viewsonic VA-2719 for $299. 99% sRGB and 1440p. Again, higher resolution = lower framerates, but the extra res/workspace would be a 'nice to have' for colour work.

        • I think that a 1440p monitor would be out for me. I'd be losing too many frames while gaming in even older titles on high with such a high resolution running my FHD extra monitor wouldn't i?

Also I was aware of the loss of screen area as you move away from a 1:1 screen ratio but should be ok with my second monitor (however ugly and colour inaccurate it is), but didn't expect it to be 20", thought it would be 23 or so but it makes sense.

        • @BrewerHaHa:

Yeah the size can be misleading, the 29" should be approx equal to the height of a 23" 16:9.

Re: 1440p performance, just look up some benchmarks on YouTube/otger sites, or look up reviews for the RX 570 which typically go through 1440p performance to see if it'd be worth it.

        • @donnot: I've looked up some stuff and the FPS look quite good in everything but the most demanding of games, but once again I'm worried about adding an my extra monitor.

I think I'm more or less set on the Phillips. I'll have a ultrawide freesync monitor with great colour accuracy and I've always wanted to try variable refresh rate. I have a 16:9 FHD monitor as a secondary screen so I think that's good enough. Keeping my screen res low means the system will be able to play future releases and the system will not become a potato as fast.

  • This deal was awesome https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/320511 pity you missed it.
I have the Samsung Curved Screen, and cried a little at the deal because I truely want a Black Widow Chroma Keyboard. It is a true colour monitor, which is very important to me, and a slightly curved screen so gaming is more immersive. But set it up so your cat cant topple it I would recommend, It is very light, and I think the base should be heavier to offer better stability. Turns out Samsung customer service is super helpful after all those exploding washing machines tho, they have an unspoken extended warranty on most thier products, so dont be afraid to ring them if you are just out of warranty.

    • That monitor doesn't have sRGB 99%+ which is a no go from me. Not a huge deal from me!
