Flyscreen Door Cost - Can't believe the Prices we've been quoted

Hi Gang,

Moved into new apartment, looking to save on air conditioning cost by getting fly screens on three balcony doors.

We do not require anything like a heavy mesh/security style (Crimsafe), but fly screen mesh that won't be destroyed by pets. We need the tracks built for each screen door though - it's a shame new apartments aren't built with the track for future xD

We had one chap come out and quote $1,000 for each door (build frame and put in the pet friendly fly screen). This seems extraordinary.

We've enquired elsewhere as well but people can't get out to quote for 3 weeks or they say they'll come this day but haven't rocked up.

What is a realistic payment to have each door with a fly screen and if you have a place in Sydney you can recommend I appreciate it.

Thank you

  • I had a problem with a fly-screen door once and got quoted a massive amount of money. I asked why and the guy was very honest, supply and demand! I feel your pain mate.

    Same for us..
We ended up paying $800ea with Amplimesh screen (I think.. it was the Danny Green brand anyway) and I was disappointed with the results. Door frame has little gaps at the joins and the installer didn't tidy up after himself.

If you are in nsw (not too remote or out in the south) and have copy of the quote (materials, kind of frame etc and sizes are there), pm me I can ask my friend if he can beat it.

I was in the same boat last year where I was quoted more than $1000 by local mortar shops.

I put quote request on serviceseeking and one of the local handymans contacted me. He provided material and installed the whole thing for under $400 with invoice. It has got aluminium mesh(was worried about kid making hole while playing with pencil), pneumatic door closer, bug protection at the bottom, dual select lock which provides the choice of privacy or deadlock. It is still going strong after year.

If you are in Sydney, PM me and I will send you his details.

    • I think the OP is after sliding door screen which tend to be more expensive. They are more complicated to install and not always a standard size so can require a custom build.

Still.. I would expect it to be less than he was quoted.

    • Lot of people have messaged me recently. Here are details of this guy

G'day Spot. You say your apartment is new, have you tried calling your window/door manufacturer to see if they can make some up? They usually have the build sheet from manufacture and can make the screens up without a site visit. If you can fit them yourself that will save another site visit for them, hence you will pocket both site visit charges. If they can and will make them up (some will only make WITH windows), this is undoubtedly the cheapest option.

The manufacturer name should be shown on the inside of the window somewhere, and a few years back you could still get a BASIC one from manu. for <$200. I think Tipu's job quote for $400 for fabricated door fitted is reasonable; above that I'd be starting to ask why (for better mesh etc.)?

I filled in time between jobs working with a glazier a few years back and did a bit of this on the side. At the retail end, anything to do with windows and doors seems pricey to the customer. It usually comes mainly from the multiple site visits that are made, either for measure/quote, fitting, after sales adjustment or customer satisfaction purposes. At this end of the building process, there are also many people that frankly are difficult to deal with (looking at powdercoat with microscope to look at paint coverage etc), so a bit like buying insurance, everyone buying the product pays for those individuals.

You can DIY; although the lengths come in 6+ metres usually, and unless you have a good mitre saw setup to cut ally and a punch for lock, rollers etc.. the results will be less than you would want in your new apartment.

    Best of luck!

  • I got a rather big sliding door installed by SP Screens - Flyscreen Sliding Door with Charcoal FibreGlass Mesh. Fitted with mid height aluminium cross rail and black latch and Charcoal frame.

    Cost - $369

  • I think $800-1000 is fair

  • If its standard door size go to Bunnings. They fit it in as well.

  • So what was conclusion. Any recommended places in Sydney.

I need for sliding door in balcony. One side of balcony already has a slot. Anther side as no gap.
