Yes, NBNs VDSL/FTTN will only use the inner pair of copper.
Although be careful, sometimes cables marked as RJ11 have the smaller plug that goes into the handset.
Generally in homes i only see RJ11 but as long as it's not a crossed configuration i.e one pair swapped there should be no reason you can't use either
If you look at the top of the connector you will see the 2 outside terminals unused in RJ11
but this is a brief.
RJ11 and RJ12 wiring uses the same six slot connector
RJ11 and RJ12 only differs in the wiring
RJ12 utilizes all six slots while RJ11 only uses four of the six available slots
RJ11 and RJ12 are commonly used for telephone systems with RJ12 being used in different configurations
RJ11 is very common in today’s homes while RJ12 is quite uncommon except in some large companies
Look at both ends from the top or the hook underneath in an RJ11 pin 1 and 6 blank the other four are normally
1 White (only in RJ12)
2 black
3 Red
4 Green
5 Yellow
6 Blue (only in RJ12)
So if I go woolies buy a RJ12 it'll work with my Optus NBN modem?
Most likely as the point your plugging into will only have 2-5 wired on base plate.
effectively 2 of them will connect to nothing
But will work?
I ask because every where around me only has rj12
Yeah as i said above the rj12 has an extra pair 1 and 6 on the terminals they just won't be used.
as long as 2-5 in the post above irrespective of colour are the same orientation it's fine
If you look at a LAN RJ45 or other phone RJ 11 you will see what i mean about each end being identical so it doesn't matter which end plugs into either end
Thanks for the help :) Rj12 works
The difference is how they're wired.
RJ12 has 6 wires, RJ11 has 4.
