Written off Cars Check Via VicRoads or PPSR?

Hi all,

I am looking at purchasing a used car and the seller has mentioned that it was a repaired written off car.

The weird thing is that on the VicRoads REV check it doesn't mention this information. Would this information be the same had I purchased a report from the PPSR/REVS Vehicle Check as per (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/285995)?

Vicroads checks don't reveal write offs.
    That's the revs check.
    Ppsr.gov.au
Any other website charges you WAY more than the gov one

  • I did the PPSR check on a car I wanted to buy once, but backed out of because it list the car as a write off previously.

    • And that's what the PPSR is there for…

  • Do a ppsr check. Seriously. Or your next thread was "My new car is broken and seller won't help/has left the country"

I'd also highly advise against buying a write off unless it was a special car.

    • thanks, i always though using the Vicroads website was enough for a check if a car is written off.

      • Vic roads check shows nothing. Ppsr will show if it has money owing as well.

How badly do you want this car?

        • not really just a bit surprised that the vicroad site used to show WRO but not anymore.

        • @godofpizza: you are right it did use too but now the government has found a way to make abit of $$ while not doing any more work then it use too.
Use to show written off status, owning money, stolen.

Use the govt website and pay $3.40 instead of the ridiculous amounts the others charge for the exact same service.

Don't buy a write off, the savings are never worth it. No one knows if the airbags have actually been reinstalled properly (no way of checking)

That's the easy part. You can look at them and see. If they haven't been plugged in, it would throw a fault on the SRS light. Sensors need to be replaced and the ECU usually needs to be replaced as they usually retain data that the car has been in and an accident and the SRS light can't be cleared. But if the light comes on at start up and goes out as normal, more than likely be ok. I would be more concerned about WOVR car where the SRS light didn't come on at all. Usually means they can't clear the fault so they unsolder the LED from the board to stop it showing.

What you should be worried about is the shit you can't see. The bent chassis, the steering components and mounts, the diff housing. Things like radiator mounts that are moved and cause hoses to rub or general things out of alignment that can cause premature fatigue failure.

The airbags would be the least of my concerns…
