FTSPRING17

Just received this deal in an email, nothing on the discount page on the 1cover site (their referral button also doesn't work whatsoever).

Receive the following when you book a frequent traveller annual policy:

$50 off the maximum 90 day trip policy
$25 off the maximum 45 day trip policy
$20 off the maximum 21 day trip policy

$20 off all Domestic Frequent Traveller policies

You choose how much of the world you need covered, then the maximum number of days that any single trip will take. If you do end up travelling to a section of the world not covered, you can call 1cover up and 'upgrade' your policy to include it. Note you do NOT pay a pro-rata rate to upgrade the remainder of your policy, you basically pay the difference between what your policy costs and what it would have cost you at the beginning to have included the new area from the start of your policy. So it is better just to cover as much of the world that you think you will cover upon purchase of your policy.

I have claimed before with 1cover and I was very happy with them as they paid out. TID has refused a claim from me so I went with 1cover. I've also tried to calculate if buying two separate policies is better, and you definitely save money with an annual travel insurance policy. It's only worth a single trip policy when you literally take one trip a year… and being on Ozbargain I hope you're taking more than one :) Also as they include rental car excess up to $5000 (you can increase this) you can forget the insurance rip off they try to get you to add to a rental, and $0 excess option is also handy!

They have vastly increased their prices, however. My policy expiring in mid 2016 was $390 with $100 excess, and my policy expiring this year was $400 odd I think - now it seems to be $499 with $200 excess.

They used to have a link on the site where you could log in and see your past certificates of insurance - no doubt removed to help people forget the previously low prices. ;-)

On the upside, the insurance and therefore it seems the rental car excess cover also applies for domestic trips (50km from home), so if you rent a car interstate a lot, this policy would still pay for itself very quickly.

  • How do these compare to complimentary credit card insurances?

    • I haven't checked the T&C in a while, but advantages of 1Cover included:
      - doesn't matter if you discontinue the card before a claim arises
      - they paid out cash equivalent of points (which few if any other plans do)
