Anyone Using Alipay? Any Thought?

Went to Chemist Warehouse this morning to pick up something for the bub, found the Alipay sign near the cashier. Apparently Chemist Warehouse near my place just started accepting Alipay.

Anyone used Alipay before? How was your experience?

i haven't used it as it requires a chinese bank account to sign up for it.

I was in Beijing 2 weeks ago and the number of people using it was surprisingly high.

imagine the the current split in australia between cash and card. in beijing it was the same % but between cash (or card) and alipay/applepay.

chemist warehouse + alipay + baby formula =happy chinese customers

it will start happening here really soon and spread quickly. it's easy, safe and you don't need to be with a specific bank to access it.

    It's aiming at Chinese tourists.

Why would any Australian wanna use something that the Chinese government can spy on when you can just use your existing credit cards (either insert, tap & go, or through apple pay, andriod pay or samsung pay).

    • Because Alipay is just like Paypal except the fees that much lower. It also doesn't do (profanity) up stuff like randomly freeze your money or enforce arbitrary limits on withdrawing your own money.

But moot point anyway since without a Chinese bank account it's next to useless.

      • Don't see the benefit over an ordinary credit/EFTPOS card even if Alipay were available to us. (You wouldn't use Paypal when buying in store, would you?)

    • so that the US or South Korean government can spy on you?

      • Use cash if you're that paranoid

But do I trust an Australian bank to not disclose my financial information (unless compelled by the court) more? Sure.

        • Hardly likely that a foreign country government would be interested in knowing how much mortgage or credit debt some random Australian has.

          Wait, who is paranoid?

        • @tidie:

Not any more than anyone who doesn't wanna use Kaspersky because of their Russian connection.

Why risk it when there are much safer alternatives (at no additional cost)?

Btw, it's not just how much debt you owe but your full credit card details, but also where you've been and what you've purchased. The app on your phone might also be tracking your every movement or doing God knows what.

Because not all Australians think "AWWW MAYTE THE CHINESE R OUT TO GET US".

Some of us simply view them as fellow humans of the world. Money is money, more methods of payment equates to more profits.

  • my mrs is chinese and swears by it

  • i use alipay on aliexpress.
