How Much Do You Spend on Food?

I'm spending $10 a day and was wondering if that's reasonable?

I usually spend whatever the asking price on the food is.

  • $13 of takeout for each meal, I'm paying about: $26 a day, $182 a week.

I'd love to be spending $10 a day, for a single person if you're eating food you're enjoying I'd say its a good amount. Guessing that comes to $5 a meal, which is what I'd think is a great home meal price.

You need some economies of scale.
Home cooked chicken pieces, roast mini potatoes and vegetables fed six at our place for under $8 last night (admittedly, chicken drumsticks were $1.75/kg from Woolies). We had waffles and ice cream for dessert at about $6 for six serves.

This was a particularly cheap meal, but my standard budget for feeding 6 people is $12. Meals that hit that price point include:
      - pasta and meatballs w/garlic bread
      - stir fry noodles w/chicken
      - chicken Caesar salad
      - Full sunday roast when I can get a cheap cut of pork or chicken
      - spinach & fetta pie/quiche w/salad
      - home made pizzas

And 'convenience' meals that are lazy/busy days when I don't have time to prepare stuff and take about as long as going an getting take away include:
      - indian packet curry w/rice and pappadums (either Monica's butterchicken or Street Kitchen Chettinad)
      - thai green or red curry w/rice using jar curry paste
      - Pasta w/chorizo sauce

I have a list of 40 or so main meals so that if I get sick of a regular I can go back to something we haven't had for a while.

I try to keep breakfast and lunch simple. Toast, or cereal or eggs in the morning. Sandwiches or left overs for lunch.
A lot of the dinners we cook could have half frozen for another night if you are cooking for fewer people. Just don't go overboard and end up with a freezer full of left overs you don't want to eat.

  • What do you usually have for breakfast, lunch and dinner?

  • $15 per day while at work,
    going out i budget $200 a week

  • are you getting a balanced diet? that is more important than the dollar figure.

per others comments, what a re you eating? maybe do an update with typical days meals and pricing attached.

  • I would think most of these take out meals for work are mostly carbs and very little protein.

  • More than $10.00.

  • $10-$15 total a day for 2-3 meals.

I cook heaps of food in a pressure cooker then freeze it in portions and eat for dinner.

  • $80 per week.
    Student.

  • Nothing, if you're this serial funeral gatecrasher in the UK who has attended church funerals, several times a day, for the the past 14 years, just for the free food at the wakes.

  • Maybe $20 a day? I barely eat though, it's lunch/dinner + fruit.
