Average Weekly Cost of Owning a Dog?

Hi all!

I've seen a similar post to this on here, but wanted to narrow it down. Unfortunately, I don't own a dog but am curious to see how much it costs for the frugal OzBargainer.

What type of dog do you own?
What are the average weekly costs and how do you save on these expenses?
Would it be better to get pet insurance or to set aside money for emergencies?

I own a wolf hybrid, instead of buying regular dog food I take him for a walk to the dog park and let him eat one of the little Shitzus yapping all over the place.

    food is ok

going to vet is what costs you

    vaccination , check-up, dentist, plagues

    • Ring a ring a rosie

  • Golden Retriever

Food - Royal Canin Golden Retriever. Usually around $90 , lasts for about 3 months. Buy from pets barn on sale.

    Wormer is $20 a month

Had to buy her a bed and toys.

Vet checkup is about $120 a year.

Had to take mine in for various reasons outside her regular visit this year. Was $70. Not bad for ringing up the day or an hour before.

    Wash/grooming every 2-3 months $60-70

I have pet insurance and honestly would sell a kidney if I had to in an emergency. I think pet insurance is $500 a year with a $200 excess. So it depends on the emergency. She ate a chocolate cake - yes. In the case where I took her after work because she had a cough. It was only $70

A good family friend and my family do dog swaps when we go on holidays so it all works out well. (i.e they look after my dog and their dog and vice/versa)

    • i love Golden Retrievers, can you post some pics please?

  • Depends on your dog breed I guess. You can spend a lot or a little depending on your personal preference. I buy CopRice dog food for my staghound and a bag lasts a month for about $35 and he's 37kg. He also gets rabbit once a week. He's happy and healthy. Pure breeds cost more.

  • Food for growth stage - weekly
    Worming - 1-3 months
    Deflea - 1-3 months
Vet - initial shots, once yearly checkup, emergencies
Toys, Coats, Bowls, leads, muzzles, car adjustments, kennel - varies
Boarding if you go on holidays
repairing and replacing stuff they damage
