Travelling Overseas Soon and Need a Way to Receive Text Message for Online Banking Purpose

I am travelling soon to overseas for a few weeks but I do need to access my online banking apps there, they tend to send me text message for security check. I won't be using my Telstra sim and I plan to buy a local sim during the trip. My phone only has one sim slot so I cannot bring my telstra sim with me. Is there a good android app that sends the text message to your email address?

Thanks in advance!

  • Borrow a candy bar phone, put the Telstra SIM in it and turn on roaming to get texts.

Many banks use an app now to allow worldwide access, look into that.

    • Roaming is a bit too costly for me.
      Any other better ways?

It is free to receive texts while roaming with all Oz telcos.

      • In what way is roaming costly ? You're travelling overseas for goodness sake. I don't even think it costs anything to receive texts…

Most banking apps allow you to authenticate on the app without needing a text message though this functionality can be lost if you switch SIM cards.

Either that or call your bank and give them your new number when you arrive. You can call via Skype for about $0.20 or reverse the charges.

Seriously though a cheap shitty brick will do the job fine. There are plenty of cheap androids on eBay just grab one and flog when you get back

  • If you're with Commbank, just call and tell them your new temporary number once you got it.

  • If you have Internet access overseas, you can try https://smsgateway.me/ and install the App on an Android phone. You can see the SMS messages on the site.

However, since it is a free service, there's no gaurantee for the quality of service.

On android you can use an SMS-> email app.

    Just make sure:
    1) you forward the email to an address other than your normal banking address.

    2) someone at home is available to reboot the android phone as and when required.
Alternatively root it and get it to reboot every 12 hours.

    3) test the SMS to email works after a reboot!

The sms codes won't always come through when you're overseas or come through in a timely enough fashion.

Even when using your Australian sim, I'm having this issue with Westpac.

    • Actually this happened to me on my last OS trip, also Westpac - never got the SMSes

ring the bank and tell them the situation, they might be able to cancel the sms security check while ur away
