Introduction to Aerospace Engineering: Astronautics & Human Spaceflight, taught by NASA astronaut, Prof Jeffrey Hoffman

Spaceflight is exciting, and you don’t have to be a “Rocket Scientist” to share in the excitement! 16.00x makes the basics of spaceflight accessible to everyone. Join MIT Professor Jeffrey Hoffman, a former NASA astronaut who made five spaceflights and was the first astronaut to log 1000 hours on the Space Shuttle, as he teaches you the core principles behind space travel and exploration. The course will cover how rockets work, how spacecraft move in orbit, how we create artificial environments inside spacecraft to keep astronauts alive and healthy, what it’s like living in a world without gravity, how the human body adapts to space, and how spacewalks happen, plus more. Many lessons will be illustrated with Professor Hoffman’s own experiences in space.

What you'll learn:-

  • The basic principles of how rockets work (rocket science)
  • How spacecraft move in orbit (orbital mechanics)
  • What is required to keep astronauts alive and healthy in space (environmental control and life support)
  • Basic concepts of safety and risk management
  • The effects of weightlessness on the human body
  • How to carry out a spacewalk

What about if you're a Rocket Man.

There are some other interesting courses that are also in this same (free) category, Even if you go to the universities that participate the enrolment takes you back through EDX so seems to be quite good.

Thanks OP up to you if you want to make mention other courses but good post.

    • Is there a way to list the free courses? Had a quick look after enrolling but not obvious. And, do you know whether/where the videos are available for this course to view at your own pace?

EDIT: I see most if not all course are free to "Audit" and cost to upgrade to "Verified" to received a certificate for attending/passing.

Erm… I have not had a look yet/going to wait for the dust to settle first, but are you saying that the only way you can actually get a certificate stating that you passed the course is to pay/buy it from them? If so, then this is not in fact a free course it is simply 'free information', and presenting it as a 'free course' is misleading.

I am only interested in the learning/material so to me it does not seem dishonest to charge for a "verified certificate" however I still cannot find course material to view at my own convenience.

        • @samlor: head to one of the 5 universities you can choose what you want to look for. So in this instance look through/google MIT free courses.

As far a the cert goes i skimmed the T&C's in less time than it took to write this reply

You can if you think the course is useful change it to a verified certificate course. The deadlines for each are different. (duration of course etc. play factor)

the example i think showed 10 days prior to completion as the date you need to change make decision by.

Hope it helps and if anything is incorrect it was a 30 second skim.

First one to Mars, or you'rrreeee "it".

    • 50% off at coles at the moment

  • What’s the usual cost of this course?
    Is this a forum post?

  • Anyone doing this course? I thought the orbital mechanics unit was taxing, but that was nothing compared going through the certificate verification process!
