Using PayPal or My Bank Debit Card to Purchase from USA Site

Anyone know what fee i would pay on $139.69 usd if paid with westpac? I have a citibank account which has no fees but dont have the funds to cover item im after.

And it be good if i could pay asap,my only issue is banks and post office closed tomorrow and even if i tried ot wanted to deposit money this takes a day or so which means waiting tuesday or weds before i can use citibank.

Just curious what fee i would be charged on the above im not sure what it is in aud as not checked.

Is it 3% westpac charge on fee, thing is its with paypal but they are charging me in 139.69 to my bank account so im taking i only get charged what bank is charged.

Its weird as when your paying on ebay for something it tells you what you be charged from paypal but this is not through ebay but its still paypal which is weird. So dont paypal take a cut?

  • In other words the usa website offers paypal with options of using cards i have on my paypal or direct from my bank.
Or dont use paypal and use my debit card.
Which is best and what fees would i pay least of,if used paypal or just used my debit card?
If i had funds in my fee free card would have picked this to pay with but due to holiday tomorrow etc i be a few days away before i can pay"using that card.

I have never paid any fees for purchases from both Ebay and PayPal,unless it has changed the buyer does not pay fees through both the seller are charged you may be charged a conversion fee for the change of currency, you can contact PayPal through their website or customer care ph-1800073263-from 6am to 10pm mon/friday—8am to7pm saturday, just login to your paypal account then click customer cane, you can also check fees on their website, cheers

Some commas should be full stops, other commas missing entirely.

You have hurt my brain with your run on sentences.

PayPal charges the seller, not the buyer, a fee for receiving payment for goods and services using their payment system.

When you make a foreign currency payment with your linked debit or credit card, via PayPal, you can choose to let your debit/credit card (especially if you have one that doesn't charge foreign transaction fees) do the currency conversion instead of PayPal.

If you choose to use your Westpac debit card's currency conversion rate, you'll only know the final amount after the Westpac transaction has posted.

If you use PayPal's currency conversion rate, then you'll be shown the converted amount in AUD.

Aside from the currency conversion rate, the only fee you'll have to factor in is Westpac's foreign transaction fee.

    • But my options are use paypal this is a website in the usa not ebay, with picking paypal as option of paying it can be ftom my account or using my debit cards thats in my paypal account.
Or i can pay just using my debit card and not using paypal.
And im wondering the best option.
I thought paypal as if any issues you get cover.
One of my debit cards in my paypal is fee free but im not able to use that due to lack of funds and there being a holiday on monday no way for me to get money in quickly.
Item im after could sell before im able to get funds into the account with no fees for overseas purchase.
My issue is not knowing what im charged with my bank either it be through paypal with bank account or my cards or just using my card and not paypal.
If im using paypal to pay and the site charges usd and i pick either through bank account or my cards is there just a 3% charge on top.
      Or does paypal add more?
Or as said if i just use cards and not paypal will charges be same.
      I hope I'm making sense.

Its not like ebay where you go to pay it will show what you pay in aud to your bank etc.

  • Being that its the queens birthday on monday will banks still operate as normal?
I believe its only wa thats got holiday as other states was earlier.
If i did a transfer would this still go through, as its not a national holiday but a wa one.
Normally if i did one in morning its in another account by late afternoon.
But im not sure if westpac are as quick as that as its normally been from citibank to westpac.

      Simple Answer; No.

Banks don’t operate on Weekends or on Public Holidays.

      • Yes but its only a public holiday tomorrow in wa not in other states,so does that mean if i do a bank transfer now it will not come off my account until Tuesday?
As other states will operate as normal right?or are all banks closed tomorrow.
Also off subject if im due a payment on monday to my bank account which normally shows up early hrs of Tuesday does that mean it might be later that day or even weds.
I thought it maybe was not a holiday over east tomorrow.

        • You are correct; I apologise.

You will be fine I just realised that WA only has the Public Holiday. Banks will still operate as per usual.

        • @Lil B:

So if i transfered from my westpac to another bank it would go through as normal?
I was hoping same day,i know that my other account to westpac if done in morning its there late afternoon.
I wonder if westpac are as good.

        • @bwatt72:

          Correct, should go through normal.

Regarding Westpac’s sending duration: I’m currently with BankWest and the Wife is with ANZ and sometimes on a normal weekday I don’t receive the payment until 2 - 3 days time.

It all depends on the Bank.

Maybe give them a Call? They should be there 24/7.

        • @Lil B:

What a nightmare as i normally do it from citibank to westpac and its done same day. But this time other way round.
I have even have overseas accounts which is done the second you do it and they are different banks.
Banking here needs to catch up big time as thats how it should be.

I couldn’t agree with you anymore.

Give them a Call when you’re free and just say you have a question regarding that.

I understand your frustration, I really do!

          Good Luck.

        • @Lil B:

Wow so much for the transfer to go in same day wanted this in today after transferring yesterday still no sign what a joke.

  • well i am a bit confused,i have a debit card and a paypal account and when i purchase anything i use paypal and then paypal does a withdrawal from my listed debit card thus no fees, anything you want to purchase in foreign currency send an email to the seller and ask them to send you an invoice in Australian currency so by paying in Aust $s so there is no conversion fees,if they want the sale they will send it to you,

    • Thats not possibly they charge in usd so all in charged then regardless or if i pay through paypal or my card and not use paypal.
The only charge i get will be from whatever westpac charge me which i believe is 3% on top and whatever crap rate im given.
I was looking on xe.com and was getting a conversation there and adding 3% would i be far off from that amount.

    • Ouch! It's happening again!

  • well i am with the nab and have my debit card on file on my paypal account, the only time i had been charged a conversion fee was with paypal in early days of when ebay and paypal were one, even now paypal does not have that fee now i have contacted sellers from u.s.a, hong kong germany and u.k and asked the sellers from those countries to send me a revised invoice in au dollars and they all did because they were sellers and i was purchasing from them and they wanted to sell,

    • Ok but this is a website not eBay

    • PayPal has a pretty poor conversion rate from what I recall so chances are the conversion fee is built into their rate.
