Plans That Cut off Data When Limit Reached

Are there any telcos that offer plans that simply cut off data when you've reached your limit (with the option of buying more if you wish) rather than automatically bill you for more?

  • Kogan?

    • I can only find prepaid with Kogan. Do you have a link for the plans?

Kogan only do prepaid plans, which you may purchase either month-to-month, or 12 months at a time.

Generally with prepaid plans, there isn't any excess charges with data. With Post-paid plans, because they have your billing information stored, and as per your service agreement during signup, telcos can charge you for excess use.

I had a quick look at Vaya, Amaysim and Telechoice and they all automatically charge you once you exceed your quotas

Woolworths appears to not charge you automatically on their 12 month SIM only plans and neither on their month-by-month plan.
But their plans are poor value comparatively speaking.

Have you tried browsing our new "Mobile Plans" page that the mods created a few months back? It lists the top most popular plans by votes.

Haven't you just described exactly what prepaid mobile plans are for?

    • I use prepaid already but the deals are better with postpaid (eg the recent 15GB for $30/month), and more convenient. Plus you can do things like data share. I just don't want any surprises in the bill.

    Telechoice.
I have the auto top up data turned off. When I reach my allowance in a month,
I can call if I want to get additional 1gb for $10.

    • Probably backed by Optus who don't guarantee you won't get charged if you manage to use more before they stop you.

      • just happened to my other number under my account, reach 2gb limit i got email saying limit reach - chat with them and they guarantee i wont get charged.
call them and ask if they can guarantee probably best before committing

Samsung offers that in their phones but isn't totally accurate

its built into all android phones.

      • There ya go!

  • I would either commit to a contract that has twice as much data as you "need" in an average month and use the inbuilt utilities to warn when approaching the limit or I would just go on a pay as you go plan.

The prepaid plans I've used over the past year have been with Telstra, Amaysim, Optus and Aldi. All very cheap with enough data for me.

  • Prepaid

  • This was one of the main reasons I left Vaya. Hated the fact they'd whack another $10 charge (for 1Gb more) when you went over your limit.

    • all major postpaid telcos, telstra, optus, virgin, voda. You should be surprised.

If you want postpaid, have a look at https://www.spintel.net.au/products/mobile

They cap the data, and you as the user have to go buy another block, its not a auto top up

  • I think of wants to get a new phone on contract while also being able to cap the data.

Why don't you download the multiple data manager apps on the store? They can warn if you're going crazy with the data.

They can also stop data connection if you set a limit. This is very powerful stuff.

Just like banks and credit cards, they love to hit people with the lazy tax. Be proactive and you'll be fine.

    • I don't think those apps exist for iPhone unfortunately. Might have to switch to Android.

  • Telstra promised this feature years ago and it just died a death.

Depending on your mobile phone. You are able to adjust the download limit in your settings.

  • Spintel does and offers really good plans if you already have a phone

I think Woolworths Mobile does this?

As I don’t make that many calls/messages I use Aldi mobiles $15/$30 365 day PAYG. I just top it up when it gets low.
I also have their $15/$30 monthly data pack which you can chose to have rollover or not. The $30 pack has data rollover but you need the auto top up enabled.
    Lots of choices

  • OVO - for data, not sure about calls.
My daughter use her 1GB every month

Yeah I'm on an OVO Mobile Broadband plan and it just cuts off when I hit the quota.

You get automatically billed once a month, but you wont get automatically billed early, or charged any extra, when you run out of data. You just wont be able to access the internet.

Although there is the option to recharge instantly if you want it.

  • Most prepaid plans do this

    • The point is I wanted a post paid deal which is usually better value
