Limited / Collector's / Special Edition Games

Interested in some thoughts towards collector's edition games, specifically from last generation to current - if you think they will be valuable years from now. If possible, also back up your answer (either yes or no) with why you think that is.

I enjoy collecting them, if they are at bargain prices. This means buying them a time after release.

I am beginning to think you have to be strategic with it though, for instance, buy the ones for top games. An example is the collector's for TLOU. That is rare and can fetch in the margin of 1k. Question becomes how do you know which games will hold their value, or be rare?

I also think this for RE7 mansion edition.

  • I'm a sucker for collector's editions too! I only get them when they're reasonably-priced, like you.

Will they be valuable? There's no knowing, just like the share market.
Investing in games is almost as silly as an investment car.

    • Haha.. I remember doing the launch for the COD Prestige Editions when they were first doing them, I can't believe I was paying over $200 for these things, almost console prices!

Yeah there is no way of knowing. I just buy intelligently now. At the very least I have some cool memorabilia, because they really are indeed really cool models, some of the stuff that comes in these editions.

  • Yes many of them will rise in value but investing the money you spend on collectibles into other things will lead to much higher returns.

    • Agreed. And I didn't mean investing in that way, merely, if you bought them - would they hold value?

It would be good to know, because if you were buying them anyway then it would be nice to hear that something you own is worth a lot.

Makes me think, I should have kept my OG consoles and games.

  • I've got a few, but only ones that I really care about:

    • Every Dark Souls special edition/bloodborne special edition, even the japan only old hunters version (has a sweet artbook)
    • A gran turismo 5 signature edition (actually had some great stuff)
    • the Silent hill 2 special edition on ps2
    • the wipeout ps4 special edition

Mainly I pick ones that either have cool statues, or cool artbooks.

Artbooks are some of the nicer extras you get with specials.

Pretty much all of my specials have retained/increased in value. Keeping my old games has always been a wise investment. I doubt I ever would have been better off if I traded in my games.

    • The cap doesn't stay on my GT5 USB stick any more :( The steel box is great though!

    • Sweet.

Hey, how do you know that your specials have retained/increased in value?

      • +1

Pretty much just use things like ebay alerts and check once a year to see how things are going. I keep a lot of records cause for some reason that's just what I like doing.

Another good thing I've found through this record keeping is looking up the price of your childhood lego. That shit is worth a lot of money and is very easy to track with their product codes.

        • It's annoying that a lot of my childhood toys are lost and forgotten, because I had some great classics.

  • +1

Back in thw day i use to do that and actually go into the market and purchase and sell for profit.

Now that i have a family and these collector packs for game are grtting crazily high and with the introduction of DLC's it has tarnished the theme of collectors because you can get the same thing.
