I came to learn why dog's would care about the colour of their Lamb :)

    • +2

      3/10 dad joke

  • Have made a new account, added Advance Lamb and rice, code isn't working?

Coupon code "FFL20PFOOD" is not valid.

    • Just made a new account to test not sure why it's not working.

      • It may need an account?

        • I needed to sign in

  • +1

    Not working for me

  • +1

    Code not valid.

  • Code worked for me just now. Assume have to be logged in.

  • Worked for me.

    you need to log in

  • Worked for me now too - Coupon code "FFL20PFOOD" was applied - I added the item/s to cart, then logged in, then applied code. Thanks OP!

  • +1

can't get this code to work either. created an account, still no go.

    • +1

Created an account and could not get the code to work as well

  • Worked for me. Logged in first then made the purchase!

  • Didn't work for me either, tried logging in

  • Worked perfectly, thanks OP!

  • Great deal. Worked for me and got my dog's usual 20kg lamb and rice.

Just a quick question, has anyone used Costco Dog food? Was going to try them but this sale came up.

    • I wouldn't use a big chain's brand of dog food. I'm certain that they would cut corners and use a lot of average fillers.

    • +6

I have used Kirkland Signature natures Domain
Its made by the same mob who make Taste of the Wild

Looking at the ingredients of the Salmon Meal (blue pack)
Salmon meal, sweet potatoes, peas, potatoes, canola oil, ocean fish meal, potato fiber, pea protein, natural flavor, flax seed, salt, choline chloride, dried chicory root, tomatoes, blueberries, raspberries you realise that it

      Has no grain fillers

I would think it is better than Black Hawk lamb and rice (fillers include rice and brewers yeast), which itself is better than the more popular brands that you find at pet stores or vets :)

Beware Costco also sells not as good food like the similarly named Kirklands Signature Chicken and Rice (this one has rice)
or rubbish like Iams and Optimum :)

      • +2

I agree with everything docians has just said, Salmon Meal (blue pack) is a great dog food.

        • I think they also have turkey meal (red pack) which should be similarly good
Didn't find it in stock the one time I visited. Hopefully the ingredients will be similarly good

      • How much does the kirkland signature natures domain cost?

        • the blue and red bag weigh 15.87kg
and cost around the $70 mark
thats $4.41 per kilo, pretty good bang for your buck

Black Hawk is $3.45 per kilo with this offer (no idea what the regular price is)

Rubbish dog foods which shamelessly call themselves premium cost more eg

royal canin 12kg bag for $ 124 which is 10.33 per kilo
ingredients : dehydrated poultry protein, maize, rice, maize gluten, animal fats, hydrolysed animal proteins, vegetable protein isolate*, vegetable fibres, beet pulp, yeasts, minerals, fish oil, soya oil, psyllium husks and seeds
Has lots of cheap fillers, but present as ideal kibble based on shape depending on breed of dog

Hill Science 12kg bag on special at petbarn: $91.12 which is $7.59 per kilo (don't care if a vet recommends it check out the ingredients below)
Chicken Meal, Pea Fiber, Whole Grain Sorghum, Whole Grain Wheat, Corn Gluten Meal, Cracked Pearled Barley, Whole Grain Corn, Powdered Cellulose, Chicken Liver Flavor, Dried Beet Pulp, Soybean Oil, Lactic Acid, Flaxseed, Potassium Chloride, Pork Fat- lots of grain based fillers

      • Nice. Will get some from Costco to try it out.

Do you recall how much the Salmon Meal goes for and how many kgs?

*disregard, just realised someone else asked the same question :)

Kirkland food is actually pretty good and is what I use to feed my dogs. I usually get them Nature's Domain. I've tried Black Hawk but it gives one of my dogs stomach issues and diarrhea.

    • +1

I used to buy it but after the manufacturer's in the US had so many issues I ceased buying it. Reading some of these complaints I will continue to steer clear of it -

      https://www.consumeraffairs.com/pets/kirkland_pet_food.html

      • Interesting
Did your dog/s have any issues?

I have fed it to my dog with no issues whatsoever :)

Also the formulation is different in the US and in Australia

eg Taste of the Wild South Canyon (red bag) has salmon oil in the US but their export product has canola oil instead
It must be similar to Kirklands Signature, but unfortunately there is no website for me to confirm that about Kirklands (same manufacturer though)

Again to each his own, but I'd rather feed Kirklands to my dog even though it may cost a dollar more as I know it does not have cheap fillers, and my dog has had no issues with it

  • Tried logging in and then adding to cart. Tried adding to cart and then logging in, but keep getting an error that FFL20PFOOD is not valid.

    • Same for me. Tried all combinations and still not working. is it only working for people with existing accounts rather than for people who just created a new account for the deal?

      • I tried on my mobile (using mobile data) and it failed as well.

        • Yep…tried that as well.

  • +1

    good price. bought 4 bags

  • Worked for me just now.

  • My dog's uber picky, he hates Blackhawk.. 80% of his diet is now raw chicken necks, maryland, liver, salmon

    • Sounds healthier than my diet!

… I wonder why Blackhawk include rice? How much rice or rice-like carbs would a wild canine's natural diet include?

      • +3

Dogs don't need much carbs and can't process it properly, they are designed to eat meat and protein.

They use rice (and oats) because it's cheaper than meat, so it's used as a filler.

Take a look at a dog's poop that eats grain filled food, the poo is massive, stinks and takes ages to break down.

My dog's poop is small, hardly smells, doesn't attract flies and breaks down within a few days.

        • Yeah that lines up with what I intuitively thought.. never heard of a wolf walking through a field, eating grains lol.

Probably a good idea to include organ meats too (livers, kidneys etc).. they're part of most carnivores diets and can contain micronutrients that are absent from large muscles.

        • +6

          @simulacrum:

The supermarket dog food is the worst, it's basically wheat with a tiny bit of offal, usually dead or diseased animals not fit for human consumption.

No wonder so many dogs have health issues.

    • +1

Best thing you can do for a dog is feed them a balanced raw diet.

I feed my doggie raw beef, kangaroo, lamb and chicken along with some egg, fruit and veggies.

He's 32KG so it costs me $8-10 a day, but worth it.

      • +1

make sure u feed him/her ample bone(they need the calcium).. my active border collie prefers whole chicken pieces, he munches down on chicken necks like they're chicken nuggets

        • Yeah, bones are really important, he gets lamb bones every two days.

          And helps clean his teeth.

  • Thanks OP. Working fine logging in to an existing account.

  • doesn't work for me, tried several orders logging in before, after etc. no joy here! not used that code before either, seems it just says it isn't' valid.

Anyone whose used it successfully care to tell me the order in which you got it to work? Thanks!

  • Worked great, 2 x 20kgs bags for my puppy. Thanks!

  • Doesn't work for the large breed puppy version for me.

  • I created an account, added the food, went to checkout and tried to apply code FFL20PFOOD. It said code is not valid

    • same here. :(

  • Worked for me, but I had an existing real world Petbarn account and then I was able to link this to an online Petbarn account. Thanks.

  • Thanks OP got 2 bags using existing accounts.

  • Worked for me. Got the fish and potato. Dog loves that one. Thanks Op

  • Worked for me with existing account.
20% off BH dry food. Same as BH canned food.

  • Worked with an existing account. Thanks OP.

  • Bugger I cant get into my existing account right now.

ANd the new account I just created it says it is invalid.

    Bugger Bugger Bugger!!!

  • Seems it only works for existing customers. Wondering if I buy a bag on a new account then if I become an existing customer will it work for my next bag?!

    • It's currently the same price as Pet Circle plus can get cash back so got nothing to lose

  • Anybody know what the expiry date might be?

    • +1

      I bought a 3kg puppy yesterday. expires 2019

  • During the checkout process, Step 4, choose the option to pay with Loyalty Vouchers.

I had $20 which were applied after the 20% off. I don't know how I earned the vouchers.

Then, just PayPal (or whatever) the remaining.

  • I say this everytime, if your doggo hasn't had it before there's a significant risk that it may make them ill. used black hawk for years until they changed their receipe and watched my dog rive in pain. Not fun. Just a warning, put a small portion out and check if it agrees with your dogs stomach

  • Just ordered and picked up 1 bag fish and potato (chips) from chadstone store. All within 2 hours after order placed. Expiry date 28.02.2019

  • Great Deal, especially with the double discounts off most food items, saved a stack cheers :D

  • For those desperate just go via ebay using the 18% off PARTY18 code and it'll be pretty close to the same price.

  • Be cautious of this brand of dog food…..

We used to feed our dog Blackhawk's Lamb & Rice Dry food, as her main diet, since she was about 2 years old. She was on the dry food for a good 3 years before she developed issues. She developed bladder stones and needed surgery to have them removed because they were too big for her to pass on her own. Apparently they've been developing in her bladder for some time and she was most likely feeling pain every time she urinated….

The Vet's couldn't be positively sure what might of caused it so we were advised to put her on a Vet Prescribed Urinary tract diet. We were told not to give her any food other than her prescribed dog food since we didn't know what caused it.

She's been on the C/D diet for the last 2.5 years without any indications of bladders stones re-forming, the vets occasionally test her urine to check for any signs.
We still give her occasional treats here and there since we feel bad for her to have to eat the same thing every day, and she's doing just fine.

After I stumbled across a forum of other dog owners encountering similar, or sometimes even more severe, health issues with "Blackhawk's Dog food", I'm now fairly certain that's what caused my dog's condition. Just wanted to let people here know of my experiences with this brand, so they can make more informed choices about what's best for their pets.
