Cheapest 4K TV? Is Big W's Polaroid 40” UHD okay for $449?

I can’t find details about this Polaroid 40” UHD tv anywhere, I can only find info about Polaroid 42 inch UHD TVs or Polaroid 40” 1080p sets. I’m not too bothered about getting a cheap set, I’ll play with the settings until it looks right. And my computers graphic card will be handling all the scaling.

Why do you want a cheap 4k TV?

A quality 1080p for the same price will still look better on somewhere between 90 and 100 percent of content (depending on what you use it for).

4k vs 1080p is still less important than other aspects of picture quality like colour, contrast, HDR, etc (and if you're not watching 4k content, as most people aren't, it doesn't matter at all).

    • I want to use it as a PC monitor and to soon connect a Xbox one x to it. A 40” 4K tv will be like having 4 20” 1080p monitors stacked up right next to each other. For gaming, photoshop, and just all round multipurpose tv that I can disconnect from computer and move to another room for gaming night.

  • that TV is out of stock anyway.

    • Dang, I didn’t even notice.

If you're buying an el-cheapo TV for gaming you might regret it a little as some cheap ones have terrible input lag. Some suffer backlight bleed.

I would rather hedge my bets with an Aldi Bauhn unit as you can easily take it back if unsatisfactory.

        • I gave away my Benq gamer elite 144hz 1ms response time whiz bang monitor and am using temporarily an ancient Dick Smith 720p TV. Resolution is actually a bit less than 720p. Input lag is terrible. But my brain adjusts and I win and lose just as much as I did before.

I think I’ll be fine with even a cheap 4K tv, it can’t be any worse than the cheap Dick Smith. Between 40” and 50” would be perfect at 50hz or 60hz.

      • See my above comment.

Using this link you can check stock levels at your local stores.

        • Only use stock levels as a guide, you're best to call up the store, confirm its availability and put it on hold at lay-by for up to 24 hrs. Due to theft, damage and the DC stuffing up, stock levels are often wrong.

    • I'm currently in WA, show's it's available for online delivery?

i bought a 4k tv for use as a computer monitor. wasabi-mango 43inch i20 from amazon. i live in japan and it was about 5万円 delivered ($580AUD?).
It depends on what your playing, and as the comments say, you:re not really getting a lot of 4k content. it gets the most 4k use out of youtube 4k (because internet speeds are awesome) and i played just cause 3 and other adventure games at 4k, at medium res. lately ive been playing a lot of AoE2HD and theres no way playing it in 4k has any benefits. its an old game and everything is tiny. so my 4k tv sits at 1080p until i actually need 4k, which is around 5% of the actual time.
Dont break the bank over 4k TVs unless you are using 4K content 90-100% of the time.

    • Thanks for the insight. I play a lot of overwatch and there are options to have all the overlays rendered at 4K, and have the game output at 4K, but have the in game world rendered at lower resolutions. The overall effect is great even if you have the same itself running at sub 720p resolutions.

I also will be very grateful for the extra screen space for my messy photoshop projects, where I end up with lots of windows and tabs and stuff open all over the place. I have an iPad Pro and Duet Display, so I can use that as a secondary display to check that my work is colour accurate.

I would prefer a real IPS display over any other kind of display, but at the end of the day I don’t have a lot of money to spend and I don’t really care about picture quality, I just want a huge high res screen that is at least as tolerable as an old Dick Smith 720p TV.

  • Even though you want a 4k, you'd be better off getting a good 1080p for the same price. Cheap 4k's won't have a good look to them. 4K might have better resolutions, but does it really matter to you, if the quality of picture and colour isn't great? As I said you'd be better off getting a nice 1080p for same price that has full hd picture, and good colour. Might not have the resolution, but still will have a better picture

    • I’d still like a big screen though. Having a huge screen in your face is more fun that I thought it would be. How do you think a 40” 1080p screen would go? Curved would be nice, but 1080p has a quarter the resolution of 4K. 4K is like having four bezelless 1080p monitors in one in terms of resolution alone.

      • A 40" 1080p full hd should be fine. If you're getting it for games, assuming for pc, why not get a monitor for a better refresh rate?

        • I tried a 144hz gaming monitor and although it’s nice, I don’t think I actually care about response time or smoothness, even a slow response time 50hz tv will do me fine. I’ll by a huge curved 144hz 1440p display one day when I win the lottery.

        • I'm wondering why you want a tv over a monitor though. Since a monitor will be cheaper, and fair enough you don't care about response time or smoothness. If you do indeed want a tv, i'd still go for a nice looking 1080p tv over a cheap brand that might not only have issues with colour and performance but could have troubles in the long run.

        • Large 4K TVs are just cheaper than even 1440p monitors. Size, resolution, and price are why I want a 4K tv.

  • Its may last in a year.

  • I would just save some more coin and invest in a better more trusted brand

  • What graphics card to you have?
Tbh if you have anything less than the GTX970 then you might have issues with rendering correctly, and the frame rate will drop to 30p.
I guess if you use it as a desktop PC only then it might be okay using an inferior card, but might be a little choppy

    • GTX 1060 3GB

      • Yeah. That should be OK as a desktop and if you decide to game, settings on very minimal. Depending on the input lag of the TV & game.

        Cheers

      • 3gb isn't gonna be enough for 4k.

        • It will be if I set the game resolution to 1080p and set the game overlays to 4k.

        • Which would do what? You're either running it at 1080p or 4k. And my money is on the game at 1080p on that screen to look garbage. You also realise that those tv's don't have 4:4:4 chroma subsampling and stuff like that. Scaling is going to be bad Webpages etc are all going to look horrible. Response time is going to be bad.
It seems like you already have your mind set on 4k, everyone here has pretty much said it's a bad idea yet you still seem set on it. In which case i'm guessing you were only here to ask for positive affirmations in which case just buy it as that's what you want.
