We don't sell anything illegal. It's freeware software with emulators that are 100% legal in Australia. This system comes with opensource games that are totally legal plus media center software. It's up to the user and what they do with it. You can put roms on a mobile phone if you want - Does that make phones illegal?

      • You can put Roms and Emulators on a phone - but the phone's primary use is not for this purpose. Neither is it marketed to be "SNES Retro Gaming Console".
Yeah, it is a RPi3 within and you could use it for other purposes too. But the way it is marketed is borderline as it your premise is for people to download ROMs to use with it (hence and cue the joypads and all).

Maybe you should make a statement to say "Please use responsibly and use only ROMS that you own on Cartridge" or something similar. That's about the only thing that will make it legal.

      • Just like bit torrent sites, they don't directly provide illegal content, but 99.9% of torrents are used for illegal file sharing.

0.1% are for those so called Linux ISO downloaders :P

So, whilst this Raspberry Pi with retropie software is not illegal to sell or buy, I can guarantee you 100% that everyone who buys it will use it for illegal purposes.

Same applies with Kodi, let's face it, who's using Kodi to play back their homemade vids or crappy old DVDs?

    • lol.. I was wondering when people gonna say about that. Difference is this is not "directly" pirating vs the counterfeit software and consoles which "directly" pirate it. This system does not come with ROMS. You can download it yourself from the hundreds of sites out there. But doesnt change the premise that this is designed and to be used for pirating ROMs (unless you own the original cartridge).
I do agree there's hypocrisy somewhere in our thinking. lol

To date, nobody has been sued or arrested for video game emulation. There are also multiple closed sourced and open source projects on the internet for console emulation.

What is illegal is the distribution of ROMS for games that still have a valid copyright license. More on that from Kotaku
However you're only buying the hardware, plus a preloaded version of RetroPie (which is not illegal).

This is like people selling fully preloaded Kodi boxes. News outlets think Kodi is a piracy application when it's really just a media player front end and a media server. The Kodi program itself is not illegal, but the content you load into it (or plugins you install) itself might not be legal

  • Are the buttons on the Nespi case functional? And will the other ports be accessible? (HDMI, sound Ethernet etc)

    • Thanks for your message! Yes the buttons are totally functional and all the ports are accessible :)

  • Can I ask how the controllers feel when compared to the old SNES controllers? Are they as sturdy? Do the buttons wear out quicker?

    • Hi Munki, the controllers feel almost identical to the originals. They feel great and haven't had issues with wearing out. I've been using the same controller to test systems with every day for over a year and had no issues :)

Not being rude, just asking questions cos I don't know.
Would an android box do the same thing or is this better? Asking cos I see a remote that looks just like air mouse type remotes that can be used on android boxes.

Another, how do the amiga games play, ok? Is there an Intellivision emulator?

    • +1

Hi PVA, an Android box is based on the Android OS where Retropie is based on Raspbian (linux). Out systems do include Kodi which means you can install any Kodi app, but it doesn't have access to the Google Play store like Android boxes. You can use the same android box remotes though :)

Amiga and intellivision emulators are both installed however you do need to add the bios files for them and they require a USB keyboard to work

      • This does amiga? You got me interested. Is it straight forward to update the bios(to allow the amiga option). If I stuff up can I revert back easily?

I'll definitely consider that cool nintendo case And with the kodi on board I would have to consider that remote too.

I like the idea of using ps3/ps4 controllers too

        Thanks‎

        • Amiga, yes :) It's very easy to add bios files and you can't stuff it up too much (unless you change core files or an update goes bad). Reverting it back just means flashing an image to the SD card. Happy to help you with that if it gets to it.

  • Thanks OP for the head's up, just bought one 😊

    • Many thanks Juddda! Will get it out asap for you :)

  • Hey PiShop. I don't need any controllers, so any chance of getting this deal but with the Kodi remote ( http://www.thepishop.com.au/remote-kodi ) instead of the SNES controllers?

    • Hi Fappo, yeah sure thing. Just send us an email by replying to your order email and we'll replace the snes controllers with a remote :)

      • Nice one. Thanks. I just placed an order and replied to the receipt email with the request.

      • I just received my order. You sent me the controllers and not the remote :(

        • Hi Fappo, could you please reply to the order email so we can assist?

  • Awesome - been looking for the easiest way to relive my childhood (not to mention reasonably priced) and I just took the plunge with this deal. Will try with included controllers for now then possibly upgrade to the wireless ones if need be. Would these (http://www.thepishop.com.au/ps3-bluetooth-controllers) work out of the box?

    • Thanks for your question macfudge. We have several configurations so it's best to let us know what controllers you might want to purchase in the future so we can set your system up so they are plug n play later on. Something to note is that PS3 controllers and the 8bitdo controllers won't work on the same system (due to different BT drivers needing to be installed), so if you would like to add ps3 controllers later on just let us know and we'll set your system up for those :)

Got a quick question, if we upgrade to the nespi case + fan for the $32.95 extra, does the bundle still include the orig Pi case that comes with the base deal and retails at $14.90?

Might sound silly asking, but I'm thinking of buying a second Raspberry Pi for other projects, and hence a spare case that would otherwise cost me $14.90 could definately come in handy.

Completely understand if this $14.90 is to help offset the additional labour/assembly etc.

    • +2

Hi Grish, great question, the original case isn't included due to the assembly time of the NESPi case & fan. It takes approx 30x longer to build it in the NESPi case due to all the tiny screws and wiring :\

      • Great, thanks for getting back to me.

  • Can this smoothly play the metal slug series? Neo geo console I presume? Appreciate the reply

    • +2

Hi Niceone8, very much so! Metal Slug is one of my killer go-to games also :)

      • Appreciate the reply. Excited to receive it!

  • How many games are in the 16GB version over 32GB version?

    • +1

Both come with zero non-free games. The amount of games you want to add is up to you, and to give you some indication of 16 vs 32, well let's just say the 32 can store twice as many ;)

Unless you mean how many games are provisioned with metadata etc. In which case, the OP might be able to answer that one.

  • Hi guys. Old school gamer here.

Just to confirm, I can play MAME, Amiga roms on this? How about C64?

Also - do PS4 controllers work out of the box or do I need some kind of dongle?

And finally, I'm assuming I can install Kodi plug-ins?

    Thank you!

    • +1

Hi domcc1, absolutely, it plays all of the above. Please check out the Retropie Mame wiki (google retropie mame) for romset versions. For Amiga and C64 you will require a USB keyboard to be plugged in plus the Amiga bios file copied over.

PS4 controllers work and for compatibility reasons its best to use Sony's official usb wireless adapter.

Kodi is pre-installed and you can install any Kodi plugins :)

  • Ok, a few questions before I order.

I would like it in the NES style case, so total price needed please. How noisy is the fan?

Can the wireless PS3 controller be used straight out of the box, nothing weird to do and it's usable for all games? ( you say you would set up the system to accept that controller somehow)

Can you play 2 player games with the supplied controllers ok, what about using one controller and the PS3 controller.? What about with two wireless PS3 controllers?

When the unit arrives all I need to do is put some roms that have been sourced from elsewhere to a folder on the microSD card? And then plug it into power and the tv and away I go playing?

    • +1

Hi PVA, Pack + NESPi Case with fan plus assembly = 132.95 posted. The fan is very quiet and you need to put your ear to it to actually hear anything.

If you let us know after ordering that you want it configured to accept PS3 controllers then we can do that for you. The PS3 controllers are configured to work out of the box with all libretro emulators (which is about 95% of all consoles on Retropie). Once you receive your Pi just connect the PS3 controller via the USB cable to pair, unplug it and it will sync. Pretty straight forward:) There might be the odd occasion that people might have a different revision of a PS3 controller so you just go to the bluetooth menu and choose to re-install the PS3 driver (only takes a few seconds).

You can play multiplayer games using a mix of controllers, so both SNES or PS3.

Correct, to copy games you don't remove the SD card as it's formatted in ext4 (linux partition). The correct way is to connect your Pi to your network (via cable or wifi), then access the share from your PC or Mac. This video shows how easy it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owoRaZFOb7o&feature=youtu.be…

      • Sound fantastic.

I mucked around a lot with the original DS handheld and roms for it( also encoding movies, home brew etc) so I know a little, but that was many years ago.

A few more questions, is 16gb enough, I assume so seeing roms are pretty small.

Are the supplied controllers fine to use for most old games, we do have a PS3 so we have them if we need but would be nice with a simple controller. I assume I can just buy some kind of cable to extend the controllers 1.4 m length ( USB to USB?)
And I assume PS3 controllers mean genuine Sony ones work?

        • +1

16GB should be plenty of room if you don't put too many disc based games on there. The space will obviously get eaten up a lot quicker if you start putting a bunch of Playstation games on there though.

        • @Fappo:
Any idea what, say, 6 ps games would be… 4 gig? Just so I have a couple on the list.

I am so confused by the rom pack I see at Arcade Punks, some 2 gig, some 128 gig , this list is a mile long, all I would want is say the best 50 of each console for example

      • So you can play games directly from network share instead of installing on SD Card?

        • Hmm technically it's possible and I believe I've seen someone else online showing how they do it :)

  • Hey OP. Do you offer these packs without the raspberry Pi?
Or do you offer kits to make something like a super Pi boy?
    https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1779343

    • Hi! Not yet but we are looking into multiple DIY packs :)

  • Why is there a price variance between your website and your ebay account?

    $110.95 for the console.
    $46.95 for the nespi case.

  • Got mine today. Looks great with the little miniNes style case.
Now to figure out connecting to our network and chucking some ROMs to it.

    • Excellent to hear :) Check out these 2 links from our Support center

How to connect to wifi: http://thepishop.helpsite.io/articles/15543-how-to-i-connect…

      How to add games: http://thepishop.helpsite.io/articles/15529-how-do-i-add-gam…

      • I am amazed that my 19 yo son and his girl friend are so liking this, didn't think they would as it seems old, retro has sucked them in.

Thanks, I did sort it out. Pretty simple once I connected a keyboard and added the wifi details. One that was done I wirelessly added the roms.
I still need to figure some roms out. Eg say I want neo geo pocket, and I don't see that folder on the retropie, do I just make the folder? ( and what name do I use) and then neo geo pocket appears as a menu choice?
Some roms I click on start to load then go back to the games list, I assume that rom doesn't work..

And one question more, neogeo roms, when I look at them it has like a screen shot of each game and a description, she's etc doesn't. Am I better with just using BlueMotion roms?

        • Excellent to hear. Please send a message via our contact form on our support center and I'll be happy to answer your questions: http://thepishop.helpsite.io/

        • @ThePiShop:
Will do. I'm away for the weekend so will do it tomorrow.
