Does OEM Unlocking S8+ Bootloader Trip Knox?

Hi guys,

I am getting an international version of S8+ SM-G955F today and I am NOT going to decide whether I should root the phone (for Greenify / Adaway) before using it for a couple months. Obviously I don't want to trigger KNOX and avoid my warranty for the time being; but I also prefer not to wipe my data in a couple months time if I decide to root.

So my questions would be - Is it feasible for me to unlock the bootloader (with KNOX intact) once I get the phone and in a couple months time flash Magisk or SuperSU without wiping my user data?

Thanks.

  • Pretty sure you'll trip knox.

    • By simply unlocking the bootloader? Even without flashing anything?

      • +1

Samsung's secure boot will check the bootloader and the kernel to see if anything has been tampered with. So yes it will trip the knox efuse.

        • Argh, guess I am out of luck then. I might try Adhell and use Greenify without root (gonna miss the wake up cut offs).

        • @MadMaxBargainRoad:

Well android now has Doze which is quite similar to greenify.

You can set apps that will always be dozed immediately after closing the app,and you can set apps to not be dozed as well.

Just Google doze and you'll see how you can use it.

        • @mbck: I have tried doze before but it doesn't deal with rogue background apps that well. Any particular 3rd party doze app that you are using? Or do you just use built-in system doze settings?

        • @MadMaxBargainRoad:
I only use the built in one. I hate having multiple apps that does the same thing. It's silly, but I get annoyed having 2/3 keyboard apps, etc.

MNost apps now are quite stable and I hardly find any rogue ones anymore these days. I remember downloading things a few years ago, and my phone would run hot and you can see the battery draining every minute.

Plus you've got to remember phones nowadays are designed to last 1 day (if it does reach it).

Note, Except for those with giant batteries >3500mah

        • @mbck: Eh mate, I just installed Adhell 2 on my s8+ but I keep getting activation failed error. Can you please shed some light?

Nevermind, apparently I am supposed to register an enterprise key first.

  • It sounds like you have grey stock? In which case you may not have much in terms of warranty either way? But I think you will trigger knox.

I /think/ you can reset it? (not sure if its a hardware fuse thing?) but you wouldn't be able to reset it if something went wrong (like screen stopped working).

    • Pretty sure it can't be reset. However, at this stage I just want to unlock the bootloader without flashing anything. The reason for doing this is that bootloader unlocking wipes user data and I am trying to avoid doing that down the track.

You are right that I wouldn't have much warranty service but it's more of an insurance for any critical failure in the first few months where eBay could still side with you for refunds.

    • It can't be reset. Many have tried since knox was developed and I haven't heard of anything being successful.

      • Thats a shame to hear, but thanks to letting me know.

  • I don't use Ad-away, I just use Adhell. Adhell is non root and uses the built in Knox Firewall and published lists on Ad-Away to achieve the same result.

The only downside is the UI. It's basic. There are no counters to show how many ads were blocked or what exactly it's blocking. There are no settings. It's just bare bones, but it works.

  • From personal experience, I rooted my S7 edge and then the screen broke itself, (colours washed out and faded) took it to Virgin mobile and they replaced it a week later after sending it to Samsung.

I really think the only thing they look out for when claiming warranty IF HARDWARE FAILURE is the water damage or if the water sensor is tripped.

tbh, the only reason you'll claim warranty is by hardware failure, like screen, battery or motherboard, none can be caused by tripped knox.

PS, i just read youre getting international version which might not be covered by Samsung Australia, so maybe different story.
and yea knox trip cant be reset, as soon as you do something a voltage will break a hardware fuse.
